After all, aren´t we discriminated by our own government? The government refuses so many things that are entitled to straight people only. And if we do not stand up and fight hard for our rights, it wouldn´t come easy.

That's a good question. In my case, I think that I am being patriotic in that I am always questioning what my government does in my name. I do love my country but have not been at all happy with the way things have been for the last six years. As for change and discrimination, it's like that old saying "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." Social change does not come around on its own. It needs to be pushed forward.

Patriotism certainly has NOTHING to do with agreement with the current administration! [-X

Patriotism has nothing to do with the government at all.

Of course, homosexuals should be patriots. If we aren't, we may not have a country to be patriotic about.

The government is not the nation... it's only the guardian of the nation. Right now we have some people doing a piss-poor job of government, but that doesn't make me love the nation less.

That said, I think patriotism is a waste of time. Nationalism itself is something the human race needs to grow out of. But that's another topic altogether.

Patriotism has nothing to do with lifestyle or sexual orientation. The government discrimminates against a lot of things but remember that "the government" is really a bunch of laws. Government doesn't discrimminate, laws discrimminate. Thus, you have the "battle" over gay marriage and other things. One side wants the law changed, the other side doesn't. That's democracy.

As someone else pointed out, the other thing is that it takes a long time to make social changes. The mood of this country at the moment is very conservative with a lean to the right. Also, the current administration has embraced religious extremists because that's their voter base. That slows down social changes. Gays have come a long way and are, by and large, more accepted than ever before. There is still a long way to go. Change will come, but slowly.

To be honest, I've always thought patriotism is a bit of a fools paradigm, but that's because nationalists over here have a tendency to be loud, racist, foolish bigots like the BNP. I've come to realise that being proud of your country is a good thing, as long as you don't look down upon other countries or get some dillusional superiority complex like SOME countries have.

A love for your country, it's values, and (the majority of) it's people is a good healthy thing, and something someone should be glad to have if their country deserves it. It has nothing to do with a current government.

So yes, gays should be patriotic, as should all people, if they have a country and people to be proud of.

Should people be patriots? Why? Is my country better than yours? Is the history of my country better than yours? People should be humans.
