In this forum I have constantly seen people talking about double eyelids.

Speaking of cosmetic surgery, the most popular procedures in USA are liposuction, breast augmentation and nosejob, while in East Asia, the most popular procedures are liposuction, breast augmentation and double eyelid surgery.

So you see there are similarities and differences. People all want to be slim, women all want big boobs, and white people want to get rid of their big nose and East Asian women want double eyelids.

East Asians' double eyelids is different than Caucasian eyelids. Caucasians, strictly speaking, have the look of "double eyelids" because of their deepset eyes and protruding eyebrow bones, and thus when they open their eyes, upcast, it looks like "double eyelids".

However, many East Asians may have a fold, a natural crease above their eyelids, which adds some beauty to the eyes, and which is what those who don't have this may dream about. In Japan, 70% of the population have single eyelids, while in China 70% of the population have double eyelids. In Korea, I believe most people are born with single eyelids because I have seen the kids there ALL having single eyelids.

Double eyelids has actually been an issue ONLY in East Asia, but some white reporters brought this topic back to their country to please its people by relating it to Asians looking "more white". That's ridiculous.

In USA, there are millions of cosmetic surgery patients who want to get rid of their big nose, but they do not necessarily want to look more oriental. Likewise, an oriental woman who would like to have bigger eyes may not want to look more American.

Therefore, cosmetic surgery is all about looking more beautiful; its nothing to do with looking like one race. That's what some people feeling insecure about themselves might like to believe.

#########################

An eyelid is a thin fold of skin that covers and protects an eye. With the exception of the prepuce and the labia minora, it has the thinnest skin of the whole body. The levator palpebrae superioris muscle retracts the eyelid to "open" the eye. This can be either voluntarily or involuntarily. The human eyelid features a row of eyelashes which serve to heighten the protection of the eye from dust and foreign debris. "Palpebral" (and "blepharo") means relating to the eyelids.

Double eyelid
A double eyelid is a type of eyelid where a crease exists. In contrast, a single eyelid has no crease. There is a wide variation in the location of the crease, particularly in the Asian double eyelid.

I am not very familiar with this procedure, but I think I remember seeing something on the news about it. What is the frame of reference used for the "double eyelid" surgery? That is, when someone gets this surgery done is it similar to those who go in for other plastic surgery asking to get the nose of "celebrity X" or the cheek bones of "celebrity Y"? I don't really understand how the "double eyelid" surgery is meant to beautify.

You need to go to Japan or Korea to see the single eyelids.

Speaking of cheek bones, in the West people think high cheekbones are sexy. But in Korea and Japan, people have surgery to get rid of high cheek bones.

Do you think cleft chin is sexy? there is also a surgery to make fake cleft chin. I tried it but not very successful.

Double eyelids an issue on a gay forum? I thought it was only Asian women who cared about it. The last person I know of who made an issue of it was my aunt...who also insisted on pink matching shoes, handbag, skirt, lipstick, eyeshadow...and God alone knows what else. And that was in the 60s!

PS
That was my maiden aunt. And that was the closest she ever came to being made all through her matchy-matching life.

I do think cleft chins are sexy on some (e.g. young John Travolta)..but i would not get one myself. I am averse to surgery unless absolutely mandatory, which is probably why I don't understand changing one's eyelids. but if it makes them happy...it is their body to alter...

Asian men too. I have the worst case of single eyelids. My one eye has the fold, the other one doesn't. so that makes one eye look bigger than the other. ugh.

No...no...don't do a thing to your eyes! Make them your trademark. Anyway, I think the slight difference makes a man's face look downright interesting, if not really good (emaphasis on the real). Believe me, the difference caused by that single extra tiny little fold of skin is so negligible that nobody else would notice it. You have been looking at it fromthisclose to the mirror, haven't you?

I tend to find guys with single eyelids so sexy and super attractive.
That's why I love Korean and Northern Chinese guys, cause alot of them have single eyelids:-).
I really don't get why alot of asians especially asian females obsessing over double eyelids or looking more caucasian, it probably has to do with the images in the media that's warps the mind.

I think us asians have some really amazing and beautiful features.

Can someone explain me what single and double eyelids are?

I've never noticed anything special about eyelids?!
A double eyelid is basically a very small crease at the top of the eyelid while a single eyelid doesn't have that crease, making the eyes less pronounced. Most non-Asians don't even notice much, if any, difference between the two. One example of a side-by-side comparison:

I remember watching an episode of a short-lived (but very interesting) documentary on MTV years ago called My Life Translated. One episode, hosted my SuChin Pak (Korean-American VJ) dealt with the double eyelid issue, profiling one young Asian-American girl who was deciding to get the surgery and also delving into SuChin's own personal struggles with the eyelid issue and how she was obsessed with having the double eyelids (she never had a surgery though). I was fascinated by it because in spite of having grown up in an area with a large Asian population and a good number of my friends being of Asian descent, I had never even heard of this procedure prior to that show; only to later question my Asian friends about it and find out just how widespread the surgery is and how much of an issue it is for a lot of Asians. Not being Asian myself, I don't understand it, or even see much of a difference between the two.

Every...damn...day.

Why? Oh why would you do that?

I take it you know that the reason why so many stupid Asian women mutilate themselves is because they want to look like white women? I can't speak for ladies of Oriental descent in other parts of the world but the prevailing belief in my part of the world is that only white women have the epicanthic fold, ergo, if they had it, too, they would look less Asian...ergo, more 'western' and high class.

I take it that, as a person of some intelligence, you wouldn't want to be making yourself so much a victim of such an old self-prejudice perpetuated by ignorant Asian shopgirls, farm girls, rich men's illegitimate second (or third or fifth) wives, daughters and sundry such cerebrally underprivileged women.

Would you?

Don't Asian women impose enough of such colour-based prejudices on themselves already, that you would want to do that to yourself?

It's the same thing as when some very supposedly reputable cosmetic companies came out with advertisements for skin whiteners. The insulting ads ran for weeks in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore before a sufficient number of intelligent, educated women could be gathered to make a hue and cry over how demeaning the ads were. Now they call those products 'skin brighteners" but the ads show the same thing with one frightening difference. The advertising companies make the models suddenly appear even whiter by adjusting the contrast so drastically that the women went from their natural corpse colour to a truly ghostly pallor.

I don't blame ignorant Asian shopgirls, farm girls, rich men's illegitimate second (or third or fifth) wives, daughters and sundry such cerebrally underprivileged women for not knowing that the models' sudden transformation is due to a twiddle of the computer knobs and has nothing to do with the skin creams advertised. But surely, surely, you wouldn't be taken in by such a deception. Would you?

Thank god for diversity...I dont know why people are so determined on making everyone look the same. What would be the fun of living in a world that didn't have men of every colour, length and build...all with either single or double eyelids?
