i have a strong feeling this will upset some hard core trekkies:
"We made this film not for Trekkies but for future fans of Star Trek," Abrams told a news conference. "The studio wanted to give the film a fresh start, and I was originally brought in as a producer, but upon reading the script, I saw so much potential and possibility that the original had failed to realize due to technological constraints, so I got very greedy and I decided to direct it myself."

irrelevant of the story i am still excited to see this sucker!
 
Anything that brings life into the ST Franchise should make the trekkies happy especially after how the last movie and series did.
 
Surely the future fans of Star Trek that this film is designed to attract would still be called Trekkies? Or Trekkie Mark 2 or something...
 
I'm going in with low expectations anyways...

I wish they would make another Star Trek tv show....maybe a star trek the next next generation....I don't want to see anymore past stuff like Enterprise...

or how about a damn Deep Space Nine movie so we can finally have some closure for Captain Sisko
 
I'm a little disappointed but I'm not really surprised. The last movie didn't do that well and since we aren't getting any of the original actors (from any series), they have to do something to generate interest.
 
Enterprise had a lot of potential and I watched it all the way through. I still don't know exactly what they did "wrong" with it but it didn't start "feeling" like Star Trek until the last season. The last episode however was thoroughly insulting to the audience.

i thought enterprise found its groove in the 4 season. that was when the producers (berman & braga) stepped away and allowed manny coto to run the show. that last, insulting episode was written by berman and braga.

its sort of ironic because imho st:tng didn't start to excite me until the 3rd season. that was the season that roddenberry stepped back and allowed berman to run with it.

Absolutely. Which is why the statement "this film's not for Trekkies" makes zero sense. So are they saying this film is not for anyone who could be a Star Trek fan? So who is it for then, really? Why even call it Star Trek, if it's not reallly Star Trek? Why not create their own sci-fi franchise and characters, rather than steal someone elses idea and claim that it's not for fans of those old ideas.
 
This movie should be less "trekkie". These fantasy movies have taken an "ultimate" version of themselves. Comic geeks know what I mean, lol. Spider-man did this, Batman did this, X-men did this,Iron man, and the list goes on. It's leaving the camp behind and trying to put these characters in our world.
 
I thought Enterprise was pretty much a piece of shit. Good actors, good characters, appallingly bad plots that totally failed to connect with the other series in any way that made sense or even (in some cases) with each other.

I haven't decided about this one. I probably will see it, if only to see Anton Yelchin (a great actor and cute boy) play Chekov (even though it makes NO sense for that character to even be born yet in the time period depicted).

I imagine they had the choice between keeping him in and not having it make complete sense, or taking him out and having all the people in his fandom whine like a bitch about it.

there's been an update to the original story...

J.J. Abrams, director of the upcoming Star Trek reboot movie, clarified his remarks, reported last week, in which he suggested the movie was not necessarily aimed at longtime fans in a panel at WonderCon in San Francisco on Saturday, proclaiming his and his producers' love for Trek fans and assuring the roomful of convention-goers that the movie will be faithful to canon.

Abrams also unspooled the film's new full trailer, which is slated to be released in theaters on March 6 along with Watchmen. The trailer featured about 50 percent new footage, including more looks at some of the images already seen in earlier teaser trailers, a better look at the film's epic visual effects and battle scenes, a new glimpse of Chris Hemsworth as Kirk's father, George, and even a quick shot of Kirk sitting in the captain's chair on the bridge of the Enterprise.

I'm gonna see it regardless of the storyline...William Shatner appeared on Oprah & was PISSED that he wasnt asked to do a cameo..

My favorite Star-Trek Team is "The Next Generation" Captain Pickard was no Fucking joke...And on top of that he was one Sexy-Fucker...

Jean-Luke could lift his Legs up in the Air and i would fall to my knees ready to please...

His most recent casting role as Professor X is so limited...
 
It's 'Jean-Luc', but you're right, MisterMajestic. Patrick Stewart is one hella good looking old man. The only bald guy in the world I'd get with.

I loved him as Professor X though, more so than as Jean-Luc Picard.

Any TV series that needs three seasons to find its groove is doing something majorly wrong. :)

You can't be SERIOUS...7 seasons you were able to watch Patrick in those SEXY Spandex uniforms (hoping the camera would show his Ass while he walked away) on Star Trek and you THROW all of that down the drain for 3 feature films that have him sitting in a Floating Golf-Cart-mobile for 2-plus hours?

..LOL...Come on man...X-Men is all about Hugh Jackman...And He is a Hot Fucker that can wear a Damn pair of Tight Leather pants, but Patrick's role in that flick was a step-down for his Leading status in the Star Trek series and Films...

I didnt want to see Patrick in a Floating Grocery Buggy..I wanted to see his 60yr old Buns at least ONCE...

All the Star Trek series experienced a slow Start dude..I didnt even watch "Enterprise" and I think Scott Bakula is a Sexy dude...

The comedy Mega-hits "Friends" & "Seinfeld" were UNOTICED for a couple of seasons until people caught on...
