SCI FI confirms Atlantis cancellation, TV movie

Thursday - August 21, 2008 | by Darren Sumner

The SCI FI Channel is calling it quits with Stargate Atlantis -- or at least in its current format -- the network confirmed in a press release today. The spin-off series will conclude in January with the current, fifth season, and will be followed with a 2-hour Atlantis movie (story).

SCI FI will have the exclusive worldwide television premiere of the movie, which MGM will subsequently release on DVD. The movie does not yet have a title.

Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, executive producers and showrunners on Atlantis for its final two seasons, will pen the film.

"We're excited to tell Atlantis stories on a bigger canvas," series creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper said. "The successes of the two original Stargate DTV movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum have shown us the opportunities that the movie format offers. We have plans for both SG-1 and Atlantis to remain vital as we expand the franchise."

"We share in the producers' enthusiasm to move forward in this direction and we look forward to a strong and continued relationship on Stargate Atlantis in this new format," said Thomas Vitale, SCI FI's Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies.

"Enemy At the Gate" will be the 100th and final episode of the series, and will air in January.

The complete press release follows on page 2. GateWorld will have comments from the producers of Stargate Atlantis soon.

Sad to see but has seemed to have lacked a purpose so far this season no big story arc and a more star trek type set up

its strange that in Stargate we have gone from where we are to having basically the most advanced technology in our universe yet they have not told the public yet

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :(

Thank god. I love Stargate, I really do. Which is why it was breaking my heart that Atlantis was doing so pitifully. Seriously, this season has utterly sucked. It's been incredibly boring and, after five seasons, they've barely touched on anything that Atlantis as a city has to offer.

It's the most sophisticated piece of technology in the Stargate universe and they've barely done anything with it. Then with them getting rid of Weir and replacing her with Carter, then replacing Carter with Woolsey - that's getting tired. Then the whole trying to wiggle Kanan into the storyline as though Teyla "always talked about him". Throw in the endless repetition of episodes of Ronon and his "epic struggle" against the Wrait and you get a big bore.

I love Stargate. Which is why we need to let it finally die. Let it rest in peace.

yeah, if it goes on too long it just brings down the overall quality of the series. SG1 should have been canceled after the 8th season when the entire story up to that point was concluded and RDA left. I think re-inventing the whole thing was a dumb move.

With this season it kind of feels like the same thing is happening here.

I completely agree. Although, I have to admit, I did not mind seeing Ben Browder shirtless and in his underwear. He ... he just does it for me. The whole Ori thing was an interesting concept but ... yeah.

It really is. The writers seem to have been trying to bring in more interesting villains, but they keep failing. "Vampires in space" turned out to be ... lame. Objectively evil villains are boring. "Replicators" have been done to death in SG-1.

It probably would've literally killed the writers/producers to listen to ideas that fans come up with. It would've been the end of the world for them because, fans don't know what they want. Clearly.

Elizabeth Weir should have never died. Instead of the Ashurans being replicators, they should've been Ancients who gave up on technology and took up an existence similar to that of the Nox. Preferring to evolve in harmony with natural systems rather than transcending them. Teyla should have gone away, never to return just like Ford did. Ronon's whole fellowship with the runners should've never happened - no one cares.

They should have introduced a technologically advanced civilization who had come to the Pegasus galaxy in peace, finding Atlantis and forming a friendship with them while, at the same time, researching a way to repair their inability to procreate. Yes, I realize that this was done with the Asgard, but it was never really explored. The Asgard kinda just gave up.

The ambassador to Atlantis would be fascinated by humanity, wishing to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship. Exchanging understanding and technology. Behind closed doors, however, this species would be contemptuous of the technological resources of the Atlantis team, and envious of humanity's ability to procreate.

At some point we, the audience, would learn that this species has decided to experiment with merging themselves with human beings in order to ensure the survival of their kind. These experiments would prove to be fatal for the humans involved, as it's revealed that humanity has not evolved enough to allow for such a joining. The monstrosities their experiments produce litter random planets in the galaxy and it isn't long until the Atlantis teams stumbles upon them.

So we have a nebulous antagonist who, while being the greatest ally of the Atlantis team, are also selfish monsters who are willing to gut humanity in order to ensure their own continuity. I think that would make them much more interesting and sympathetic.

Well, I've always said that when the characters start having babies, the end is near. I'm sure ScFi will find something else for the cast. I recently saw Shanks in a movie about killer wasps, poor Mikey. But look what they found for Browder and Black. It could have been renamed Fargate or maybe Starscape. At least there's Stargate Worlds to look forward too, how sad is that? Side Note; When the Ronin character joined the show, I was sure the Wraith made him a runner because he was immune to them and that's how they would be defeated. Oh well.
R.I.P. Stargate, XM

I want to see more Ben Browder and Kavan Smith. Also, preferably in loin cloths.

I'm sad. I know the previous season and this one have been kinda crappy but I heart this show.

It went downhill after they got rid of Weir. Who the fuck had that "brilliant" idea should be shot in the balls. With Carson away the show still maintained it's quality but after Weir went away it just started getting worse and worse...just proves how much of a crucial character she was. No wonder Tori didn't want to participate in this season, after the way they treated her...it's no surprise.

I love this show. Joe Flanigan will terribly be missed.
I wish they change their mind. Well, at least we got 5 seasons out of it not like Firefly we didn't even get the full season shown on TV.
I wonder how the rating was this year, if it's good why are they calling it quit.
May be they should have kept all the original casts and made Kavin Smith a permanent cast member.
It was sad when they kill off Dr. Carson character and then Weir I was like the Fuck were they thinking?

Tori must be happy, now she knows that how important her character is to the show.
I was hoping they get like 8 or 9 seasons out of it before they cancel it.
Oh Well, I hope Joe Flanagan got a new show line up that requires him to wear less this time. :-)

At least we'll still have some Atlantis movies coming up. Can't wait for THAT!!! XD

the latest episode was absolutely brilliant though

and David Hewitt's acting was superb..|

I agree. They should've aired that episode sooner because that could have saved the series.

I don't watch the show, but why was Carter replaced?

cause she was crap for the role it was Carter does an impersonation of Weir basically she was never Carter in the role it was strange to see Rodney and Zelenka trying to solve problems and she would not even speak

and surprisingly Woolsey is actually going along well this season he is cautious but learning alot as he goes along and it adds a bit of tension and also differant things he does lighten the mood to

Thanks. But wouldn't that be the fault of the writers and directors?
