I think almost every gay man who was born before 1970 probably prayed to be changed because to be gay was to be cursed and would lead one to be ostracized from society. At that time the Gay subculture was more radicalized because it was forced into the margins. These same gays became lightning rods for change and, by their courage, have enabled a growing acceptance of gays and lesbians to take place.
Most of those who are Christian are ignorant of gays--if they are evangelicals or fundamentalists they may truly believe that gays represent an "evil" way of life. It is similar "evil" way of life that their divorced friends lead but in their minds, these friends are at least "natural" in their desires and therefore, normal! As they realize they actually have friends who are gay, there is a tendency to soften.
Regarding the story quoted above--how many times do we have to read of this stuff. There are so many other stories that have outlined the fallacy of it all. We recieve our underlying identities from Almighty God. And we are all made in His image. While some may not accept or understand that image--it remains, good. What we do, how we love demonstrates this to the world.
I prayed for years to be different--I had to learn that I am what God wanted me to be. To want to go against that would be to deny myself. That is what leads to mental illness and other problems! God help us all!
Sorry to have written so much but this topic is intensely irritating!
