Im not that much of a swimmer, but I can only go twice.

At the beginning of the summer I was doing 3500 m in the pool...in a 50 m pool that would be 70 laps.

surge, for me that depends on the swimming style. Freestyle I'm somewhat limited on, but using breaststroke, I could go on for an hour easily. Workday mornings I try to get in 30 minutes, alternating freestyle laps with breaststroke laps. I usually get in 22-25 50-yard laps, which comes out to around 1200 yards. Fatigue isn't what gets me to stop - it is having to go to work. There are other guys there who swim lap after lap of freestyle for 20-30 minutes easily. I'm not quite there yet. The most freestyle laps I've been able to do in a row is 5. I'm slowly building that up, though.

Back when I was in swim team...probably like my max was probably more than 6,000 m a day. But that was a good while ago.

Well, when I swim, I tend to swim 2100m (or yards depending on the pool). It is broken up with sets of course. As stated above, I don't quite b/c I'm spent, but just b/c it is time to go. I haven't never swam until I couldn't anymore... I'd imagine it would be like walking until you couldn't.... it would take a damn long time.

And a lap typically is two lengths by experienced swimmers. Sometimes people think lap = length though so it depends on who is saying it.

And lastly, you should measure how good you are against yourself always rather than against others. Beat your own records. B/c there is always somebody better than you and always somebody worse than you out there in everything you do.

I once swam almost 100 feet...Oh yeah..thats right I did that. I know people out their are going to be jealous and say that I'm making this up. But I don't need to impress anyone.

LMAO :rotflmao:

I used to be a distance swimmer. You get tired and then reach a "stable" point. Swimming the mile at my pool was 20 laps. I need to get back to that point.

I'll regularly do about 3,000 yards (60 laps in a 25 yard long pool) in a workout. I've only been swimming for about a year and a half now and was never on a team in high school or college. Like others above have mentioned it's not that I'm too tired to keep going when I stop. It's just time to get out of the pool before I overdo it and end up sore or injured the next day or have something else to be doing.

Quite a lot of swimming longer distances is mental. With some discipline, most people can work up to swimming for an almost arbitrarily long time. The key is pacing. If you swim as hard as you can, you'll tire out and need to stop for a breathing break. Joggers (well at least most of them) don't sprint their whole jog, yet I see newbies at the pool splash and flail with tons of effort like there's no tomorrow.

The other thing that has done wonders for my technique, speed, endurance and motivation was joining a master's team. Definitely something worth looking into for those looking to improve their swimming. My team even has a gay and gay-friendly membership. IGLA has a list here.

In my backyard pool which is 40' I try to swim 24 lengths each day swimming the breaststroke which is very laxing for me. Many years ago I went swimming in a lake in Switzerland not paying attention how far out I swam and looked back at the hotel and was lucky lucky alternating with the breaststroke and backstroke making it back to shore. I definitely learned my lesson on distance swimming that day.

The furthest I've gone is 1800m, or 1.125 miles. If you can swim regularly, you can build up to sprint triathlon distance (600m) in about 6 weeks quite easily. The most I've ever done non-stop (I usually do sets of 250, 300 or occasionally 500 metres) is 1100 metres, which was 44 lengths, in about 20 minutes.

I try to do at least 1200m which is 4 sets of 12 lengths in my gym's 25m pool, all freestyle, when I swim.

Back when I was a lot more serious, I was regularly doing swim squads - up to about 4.5km.

These days I just swim by myself...and usually a more reasonable 1 to 2 km.

My usual workout is 2000-2500 yards (80-100 lengths of the 25 yard pool).

Best exercise in the world--it's like cardio, weights, and meditation all in one.

well now I usually do 50. i could do more, but i am just swimming for the fun of it. i used to be a "swimmer" but i stopped that some years ago ;)

When I used to go to the swimming baths up until a couple of years ago I would swim 64 lengths of the pool which measured one mile. I did this twice a week for three years.

I need to get back to the pool.

I haven't have a pool to swim in since last year, but when I do (on a regular basis), I usually swim for 20 - 30 minutes. I have no idea how many laps or how far that is. But it often feels like I could just keep going and going.

Isn't there a swimming smiley??? :)

I was a very serious competitive swimmer from 9-20, but now (many years later) I usually swim for 45 minutes every other day and do about 2400 yards in that time, sometimes only 2000 if I am feeling tired or lazy.
