I wonder if anyone can answer this. I am not even sure this is in the right forum.

I have always wondered what the significance is of the two solid black band tattoos some guys have tattooed on their forearms.

Is this a tattoo which is solely a gay guy thing or is it just two black bands?
 
I think it is a tribal tat that is supposed to signal gay but it is no longer DL, like the one earring in the 80s
 
Everything I see says the shape effectively symbolizes the act of wearing the memory of the deceased on your sleeve, this effect is powerful because you are carrying and honoring that memory for life.
