Tennis Anyone?

Thanks guys. I'm learning about the girls and shall be watching them with new interest.

Just a little shout before I head in to work... my boy Jarkko (Nieminen...my avatar) just demolished Christophe Rochus in the second round in Rome-- 6-1, 6-0. Sweet.

And, Captain Bligh, I'm really glad that you have renewed interest in the women's game... on clay, it's some of the best stuff around! Keep us posted with your questions and observations- it's awesome!

I think Havok's slightly clairvoyant: Petrova just pulled out of Rome with a "strained right pectoral" but I'm guessing she'll be fine in time for Roland. This opens up the draw greatly for Hingis who could get to the finals by beating Schiavone (who she beat already once this year), Pennetta (who she beat last week on clay), and either Venus or Schnyder. I'm thinking that if she gets through Francesca, she'll make the final. I'm three rounds ahead of myself, but I'm excited for a Kim/Martina final! Haha.

Also, what are your takes on Kiefer's shirt in Hamburg? It had his last name and a number on the back like a baseball jersey. The chosen number: 69. What a prick; I despise and abhor him. Grr. I can take a little solace in the fact that he got destroyed in the second round. Sweet.

I actually think that Petrova pulling out will be a good thing for her. This way she's assured poper rest time. And I completly agree with the observations testudfan made about Kim in the summer and Justine last spring and the amount of tournys they won. I didn't even think of that. Although; both of those girls had proven themselves as vetrens on the WTA before they made their extrodinary runs.

I may actually sound like I dislike Petrova, and that's not at all the case. If anyone truely deserves the French Open title it's her. I just have people that I like better that's all.

I would LOVE to see Hingis and Clijsters play again. The AO match was good, but neither were as good as they are now. I think them in the finals would be a dream match for me.

I'm glad I have someone to talk WTA with me, but I hope we're not boring anyone with our womens talks. Hopefully we'll make converts out of y'all yet!

I'm must more into the ATP during the other grandslams. Clay is so much more an equalizer for the men and tends to bring out a lot of unknowns and take down a lot of favorties. For that reason I tend to loose interest with the guys fairly quick on the guys side. I'm going to be crossing my fingers for Roger though. Or Lleyton would work!

I haven't seen Kiefer's shirt but from what Testudfan says it sounds tacky. I've never been a fan of Kiefer. He sounds like a dick, and not in the good way.

V. disappointed that Kim and Jarkko have both bowed out at their events, but Martina is still looking strong (and it doesn't hurt that her draw has opened up a little, too...). Looking forward to the quarterfinals!

Just in from playing tennis. A beautiful night, still cool. 2-6, 6-1, 5-5 and the lights went out. But my serve was right on tonight and I could put the ball just where I wanted.

No tennis on TV. I guess I'll have to wait for the FO to see the ladies. No TTC here. My cable company doesn't listen. ](*,)

I can certainly sympathize with you on the lights-going-out issue, Cap'n Bligh. The university I used to attend had lighted courts but the lights really seemed to go out indiscriminately (if they were on a timer, it must have been a variable one, it seemed) and my friend and I had some pretty epic matches that had to stop because we couldn't see. A particularly memorable one happened when I had a break point at 4-3 in the third set (both of the first two sets were tiebreaks, but I don't remember who won which) and I was at net to hit a volley when the lights went out. Sucks.

On a professional tour result, Martina avenged her loss to Venus last week by beating her in the semis of Rome-- 0-6, 6-3, 6-3. Since I didn't have the opportunity to watch it on the tele, I'd LOVE to know what the hell happened in that first set! No matter what, it certainly wasn't a pristine set of tennis for Martina. I also feel somewhat justified and proud that I had foreseen the very real possibility of Martina making it to the final of this event. Marat Safin's younger sister is her opponent in the final and Martina has already beaten her this year, though I'd be very wrong to assume that that means she will have an easy time over Dinara. Quite the opposite, actually: both players have been playing very well this tournament.

I think that Martina has certainly solidified her being touted as a real threat to win Roland Garros. My (aforementioned) friend and I were musing over the upcoming tournament and we came to the conclusion that when Roland comes along, Petrova and Henin-Hardenne have the best shots to beat Martina, and very few others have an outside chance to do so. Of course, upsets are bound to happen and I fear that with Martina just outside the top 16 in the world, she will be seeded much too low, and she has an increased opportunity for a crappy draw. She could, theoretically, draw any top three player in the third round. This would suck (for both players). While I've always appreciated the seedings being distributed based on the rankings, I don't see how Martina could be seeded outside the top 10, since she hasn't lost to anyone outside the top 10 all year, on any surface (with the one exception being Pennetta in her first tournament back, back in January, and she has beaten her twice since then anyways...). Any consenting or dissenting thoughts on this?

Certainly more to come, and the countdown to Roland is at 8 days! Sweet.

Yes, those lights can really get you. Ours have the additional charming feature that, if you let them go out, you have to wait 15 minutes for them to cool down and come on again. :grrr: .... and the timing... capricious is the word.

Looks like some great tennis coming up for the French. I hope they let us see some of it. I'm glad Martina did OK. It takes a lot of courage to make a comeback.

Anyone know anything about this Stepanek guy who has ended up in the final at Hamburg? It's a new name on me. Men's FO should be very interesting this year too. In the rodDICK thread over in Hot Topics, elle has some pictures of Andy actually practicing on clay! (!) (!) (!)

There's still a couple more days of qualifying play to go, so it probably wont be until Thursdayish. I'm not completly sure. I looked on the web site and didn't see anything, although I didn't look TOO hard, so who knows.

YAY FOR HINGIS! I'm SOOOO happy that she won a tournement this year! I wasn't sure if she'd win one this year or not, but YAY!

I just got in from playing some nice tennis tonight. It was a great night here for it. We were just playing around but I managed to win all three set anyway. So that was good.

Yay for Hingis again!

High drama  in the Andy Roddick camp today :-({|= . There's more to tennis than just hitting a ball.

Played again last night. 4-6, 6-3, 5-3 and the lights went out at 40-love! Paranoia is setting in. Oh well, it's only a game ](*,) .

confidence? I gave all mine away to Andy. :##: He'd better make good use of it!

But I'm keeping my serve. He doesn't need that.

Oh that sucks! They really need to not let the light go out at such a critical stage in a match. I'd play it out in the dark or something. One point away!

As far as Andy goes, at least he's got no pressure on him at the French. Everyone knows he's not going past the 3rd or 4th round. And this way he has more time to prepare for the grass!

JUBers,

Please advise me about what to look out for in the women's tennis at the FO. Tell me about the don't miss matches. #-o

I've got the men pretty well figured out. Andy Roddick seems to be benefiting from my donation of confidence (although my game today did not) and looks like playing on Tuesday. (!) :=D: (!)
