I'm impressed you know his work. Brilliant writer. I know him only from the essay collection that Penguin published in the eighties. I thought he was much older, and had died some time ago.

Just took a look at his bibliography. I see I have a lot of catching up to do. Thank you for reminding me of him.

You are impressed I am familiar with translation studies..? because I didn't recall his fame when a bookseller friend suggested to me a translation of one of his works yesterday, and it was not until I did a search that I realized he is the author of After Babel... Actually, I am not very familiar with his... efforts: I always assumed him to be one of those "pretentious namedroppers whose range comes at the price of inaccuracy and complacency".

I'm insufficiently lettered myself to know the accuracy of the assessment in the Guardian article, but my first thought was to consider the source. Not fair, I admit, but it brought to mind the comment of a professor I knew in college who said that his work was "impressive for that of a non-Marxist", which said more about the professor's limitations than those of Steiner.

I was introduced to Steiner's work when I came upon his review of Gershom Scholem's biography of Sabbatai Zevi, and was introduced to worlds I hadn't previously known existed.

^ I had mentioned him too? Well, at least he was a real celebrity.

Is this what you had in mind? I had heard of this song, but never had listened to it before. Interesting take on Mia Farrow. Dory looks very pretty. She sort of looks like Belamo's fave, Jill St. John. Maybe they had the same surgeon.

^ Previn divorced his first wife shortly after she gave birth to their child. He divorced the second wife when she was hospitalized for a mental breakdown. He has said that Soon-Yi, did not exist.

Previn had an affair with some soprano who would star in his opera "Streetcar Named Desire" as Blanche. When his wife Anne-Sophie Mutter found out, she make it a condition of their staying together that the soprano be sacked from the opera.

The family situation with cuckoo Mia Farrow is a mess.

Isn't it awful to be socially branded for eternity with the surname of the bastard you had the terrible mistake to let your hormones yoke you to?

I don't think final prepositions are an absolute no-no: even vodka is not absolute.
