^ Major 'Ewwww' factor there.

I remember reading an article about Robert Clary a few years ago. At the time, he was commenting about being the last cast member of Hogan's Heroes still alive. Now there are none.

Very sad indeed.

Ron Peck, film director, aged 74.

Memories of a misspent youth. In the school holidays I used to enjoy going up to London on my own, mainly hanging around in secondhand bookshops and museums. I probably read about Nighthawks in the listings magazine Time Out and so I went to see a matinée showing. It must have had an 18+ certificate but I was tall for sixteen so I passed for 18. I even got served in pubs. Nobody in the world knew I was gay, in fact in 1979 at our school I don't think anyone knew that anyone was gay. Nighthawks was a window on another world. After that, whenever I was in town I looked out for something gay that I could do. I went into London's first (and as far as I know its only) gay bookshop, Gay's The Word, in Marchmont Street, about the time it first opened. It's still up and running, and still at the same address. I used to go in there and buy Gay News which shed further light on the twilight world of men who like men.

A year later I started doing what Jim in the film does at weekends, going into gay pubs and hoping to go home with a good looking fellow drinker who was as desperate for sex as I was. If I remember rightly he has more sex partners in that film than I've had in my life, and I never hooked up with anyone as handsome as him either; although some of mine were as bad as his. I'm smiling/cringeing to myself now about some of the awful nights I had and the lame stories I told my mum and dad to explain why I was out all night!

Anyway, I won't bore you with my tales of woe from the olden days. Do see Nighthawks if you get the chance, I think it was shown once on UK television, ages ago. Maybe they'll show it on Talking Pictures TV!
