Keanu Reeves , an actor known for his offbeat movie choices, added another unlikely box office hit to his collection on Sunday with " The Day the Earth Stood Still ," a chart-topping remake of a 1951 sci-fi movie.

The film sold an estimated $31 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada since opening on Friday, distributor 20th Century Fox said.

The three-day sum was in line with forecasts. The film cost about $80 million to make, said the News Corp unit .

It marks Reeves' biggest opening since 2003's " The Matrix Revolutions ," the third film in the blockbuster "Matrix" franchise, kicked off with $48 million on its way to $139 million.

Reeves, 44, plays the alien Klaatu , who comes to save Earth from itself. The film co-stars Jennifer Connelly . Scott Derrickson (" The Exorcism of Emily Rose ") directed.

"It's an environmental as well as a political statement ," said Chris Aronson, Fox's senior vice president of domestic distribution.

"Earth" also earned about $39 million in international markets, Fox said.

that movie was so freaking stupid omg. i went to see it at like 9:30 on friday night, and about the last half hour..nearly half the theater was asleep.....yes it was that bad.

I didn't think it was that bad but it's not on my list to see again.

It was kinda... slow. Not much happens and I still can't figure out what happened at the end and I didn't even really understand how releasing a bunch of metal locusts to devour everything was "saving the earth" but it was still a little enjoyable in it's own way.

I think the idea of the metal locusts was to destroy anything man made because after all we are Earth's cancer

but Kenunu Reeves is aging. And not that well. I mean, he doesn't look bad, exactly, but he's not "hot" anymore so much as "he looks fine."

There 4 years difference between the two of you something to think about

Oh, just what I needed to see. Another preachy, "we're killing the environment" lecture. Cross this one off my list.

When I wasn't laughing, I was trying not to sleep. What a boring movie. The original was by far better. Keanu needs to retire.

I will say that the little kid was really irritating. Like all little kids in movies.

AFUCKINGMEN!!!! :=D:

I was just about to say this. I wanted to slap the shit outta the lil' kid. Not only was his acting completely HORRID but even the character was annoying and irritating as fuck! ](*,)

I don't care about all of the bad reviews and negative comments, I can't wait to watch Keanu in this movie. G-Lex is right, Keanu and the producers of the movie are happy that you all went to watch, whether you liked it or not. Thanks for the link Paxton!

:D

We'll see what happens next week.

The reviews were scathing.

The little boy is Will Smith's son isn't he?

I was planning to watch a film with an old college friend of mine... but after reading some of what people have said, I might give it a miss...

Is Reeves' acting skill still comparable to a block of wood? :p

I cannot believe how bad the reviews are!

This movie was awesome!

I loved the philosophical debate in the movie, it gets you to look into the soul of the human race. I cannot believe people are comparing this movie to crap like The Happening. The only thing bad about this movie was the kids acting. That was tough to watch at times. John Cleese's role was short but perfect, and Kathy Bates gave a good performance as well. Keanu also did a good job with the role, and the female lead was played by an actor I never cared for, but she did very well.

Finally a great movie with a great story and a decent script.

5/5
(first 5/5 rating I would give out in a few years, although its been a long time since I have seen a movie this good.)

>>>Morbid curiosity is all that got me into the theatre last Friday and a strong hope that they hadn't trashed one of my favourite movies.

They don't care what motivates you to plunk down your cash. Just as long as you do.

As I thought would happen, it had a 67% drop off at the box office last week.

I think the word "skill" is being generous.
