The Life Of Jake Saddler

Chapter 2: The things we do

After the disastrous affair in the science lab that morning, Jake wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and die. This however was not going to happen as he still had 5 periods left. The day droned on, but Jake managed to make it through without any other major things happening. The only price to pay was enduring being called “Stop Drop and Roll” all day long.

Finally the ending bell rang, much to Jake’s relief and he could finally go home. He was heading down the hall on his way out when he passed Steve Roberts. “Hey, I hope there’s no hard feelings about this morning?” Steve asked. “Go to hell Steve!” Jake replied and he continued walking without even turning around. Suddenly he felt a tug on his shirt and before he knew it he was slammed up against a locker, with Steve Roberts inches from his face.

“What did you say to me!?” Steve aggressively asked. Jake wanted to fight, he wanted to kick and scream and beat the living daylights out of Steve, but he couldn’t. All Jake could notice were Steve’s eyes, bright blue with a ferocious intensity, peering right through him.
He could feel Steve’s warm breath hitting his lips, and then cascading down his neck, it felt oddly refreshing. “I’m talking to you!!!” Steve screamed, which prompted a teacher to come out from a nearby classroom.

“Ok, that’s enough Roberts!” The teacher called out, just as Steve let Jake go. Jake kind of slumped over, not because he was in pain but because he was weak at the knees. Steve just made a threatening gesture and then walked off with the rest of his friends, laughing and making rude comments.

Jake felt embarrassed about this feeling that took hold of him when Steve had pinned him against the locker, and kept trying to shake it out of his head. He kept telling himself that Steve was a jerk, a no good jock who’s sole purpose was to make others feel inferior, yet he couldn’t shake that fact that he had felt a faint attraction.

On his way home Jake kept running the scene over in his mind, Steve was screaming at him, pressing his body almost painfully hard against the locker, yet he felt no pain. He only remembered Steve’s eyes, and could still feel that piercing gaze which went right through him. He was so caught up in his own thoughts he failed to see such an unlikely sight.

Jake was passing Adam’s house and didn’t even see Adam waving him over. “Dude, hello? Come over here!” Adam cried out, causing Jake to stumble and look around. Jake caught sight of Adam and momentarily forgot his train of thought.

“Adam, oh my gosh I am so sorry about this morning man, how are you feeling?”. Jake was always a great friend and felt genuinely bad about what he thought he had caused this morning. “Man, it wasn’t even your fault I was on my cell, and totally didn’t see you!”. Jake could see that Adam’s had had a bandage on it, and it looked as though he got hurt fairly severely.

“How bad was it?” Jake questioned, “Car’s totaled, but I’m alive and kicking!” Adam chuckled and Jake grabbed him and pulled him into a half hug. “That’s all that matters, I’m glad to hear it buddy!”, Jake had to get home, but bid Adam goodbye, assuring him that he would phone him later.

Jake continued home, which was now coming into view completely forgetting the scene that his mother had witnessed this morning. Jake opened the front door to find his mother sitting, arms crossed and face somber, in one of the living room chairs. “Jake come here I want to have a talk with you!”. Jake knew this was it, she had caught him and this was going to be ugly.

“I say what you were doing in your bedroom this morning, and frankly I’m appalled”. Jake’s heart was beating so fast inside his chest he thought it might explode, he didn’t know how to answer his mother. “I just don’t know about you Jake, what did I do wrong, why are you so disgusting!?”. Jakes mother’s face was now becoming flushed and her tone was elevating, and Jake’s insides felt as though they were being twisted into knots. He just stared at her in disbelief, thinking that this was some kind of joke.

“You know, I can’t handle this! It’s too much Jake, how can you do this to me?!”, Jake sputtered a response “Wh..what mom WHAT?! What have I ever done to you but love you!?” Jake was surprised at his own emotions, as tears started welling up in his eyes. “What are the neighbors, our friends, our family, what are they going to think!?, Jake was getting more and more upset with every word that she said.

“They won’t think anything mother, I don’t even see what the problem is? I’m the same as I always was!” Jake was fighting to even utter a coherent sentence, his words impaired by his tears and deep breaths. “I know you are one of them gays Jake!”, and with that she took in a deep breath, looking almost nauseas . “It’s sick and it’s wrong and I don’t love you anymore!”. Mrs. Saddler was now crying equally as hard as Jake and both just looked into each others eyes for one moment.

Jake then turned on his heel, grabbed his jacket and headed straight out the door. Mrs. Saddler looked as though she might be reconsidering her wording, an ran after Jake only to scream “Don’t you ever come back you hear me, EVER!”.

Jake couldn’t think straight, it was starting to get dark and it was fairly cold outside. Rage and sadness swirled around in Jake’s head, his thoughts raced around faster than the speed of light. Jake wanted to cry, he wanted to scream, he wanted to die. Part of his brain told him this is irrational, but it was drowned out by the anger her felt inside.

Yes, Jake was now sure of one thing, he literally wanted to die. Looking around, Jake tried to get a concept of where he was, he didn’t know what direction he had been walking. He heard rushing water and knew that he was near the Cottonwood bridge. Then suddenly Jake had a morbid idea, he wasn’t in his right mind and stumbled his way towards the bridge, and proceeded to hobble up onto the edge.

The river below was not very deep and was littered with sharp and pointy rocks. The bridge was also fairly high up and jumping off would surely be enough to seriously injure, if not kill someone foolish enough to try. Jake tried to think about his life, but was too clouded by rage.

All he could think of was Steven making a fool of him, his mother catching him, the class laughing. Mrs. Smuts getting angry with him, himself nearly killing Adam, and his mother deserting him. This was enough to push him over the edge, literally, and with that he went to take a step.

Steve Roberts was driving down the road, towards Cottonwood bridge when he thought he saw something peculiar. As Steve approached the bridge his suspicions were confirmed that it was in fact a person. Steve slammed on the breaks and leapt out of his car, determined to get to the bottom of what was happening.

Jake’s foot lifted of the bridge and he started leaning towards the edge when he heard “Hey! Sir what are you doing, you’re going to get yourself killed!”. It was an unlikely voice in Jake’s mind, but he hesitated and brought his foot back onto the ledge.

Upon turning around, Jake saw that it was in fact Steve Roberts who had stumbled upon his attempted demise. Steve looked shocked for a moment realizing who this really was. “Hey, hey Jake man, just come down from there ok? You don’t want to do this!”. Steve actually sounded genuinely concerned, but in Jake’s state of mind his first reaction was hostility.
“Leave me alone you bastard! I’m going to kill myself and I’ll be damned if I let you stop me!”. Jake was furious and Steve was quite taken aback by this reaction.

Jake was about to turn around when he noticed something that triggered a memory. Steve’s eyes, as bright and blue as ever but this time lined with tears. Steve was scared, no one likes to witness another’s downfall, even if it isn’t a friend. “Please man, you’re scaring me, just come down from there!”. Jake stood still, for the first time he realized something, Steve was human.

Jake thought one last time about his grisly fate should he jump, taking one last glance at the rocks below. He was finally able to make a clear decision and decided against it, moving forward to step back onto the bridge. Steve walked towards him, just glad that he didn’t have to witness the scene play out. Just as Steve was about to rag on Jake for scaring him so badly, Jake slipped and with a terrified scream fell backwards off the bridge’s ledge. Steve lunged with all his might towards the bridges edge and extended his sweaty hand, praying that it would catch Jakes.

Chapter 3: A stir of emotions

Steve paced around the hospital waiting room, thoughts were swimming around in his head and he didn’t know what to make of them. He could remember the scene clearly, Jake was climbing down, everything was alright, but then he slipped. All Steve could remember was lunging with his hand, hoping that it would meet Jake’s, unfortunately it didn’t.

Steve remembered looking over the edge, and seeing Jake’s lifeless body on the rocks below. He felt as though he had failed, like he should have caught Jake. He just kept pacing, thinking about everything that had happened, and then shook his head and headed for the door. As the sliding doors opened, Mrs. Saddler and Adam Dunmore passed him in a huff, a concerned look on their faces. Steve stepped out into the pouring rain, and took one look back at the sliding hospital doors as they closed.

Adam and Mrs. Saddler were rushing through the hospital in a panic, intent on getting to Jake’s room to see if he was alright. “Where is my baby, where is he!?” Mrs. Saddler was screaming, prompting a nurse to flag her down and try to calm her. The nurse took them to Jakes room, up a few floors and down a hallway, to room 113. Mrs. Saddler stepped into the room, hand over her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Oh… my baby…” she whispered to herself, staring at Jake asleep in the hospital bed. Adam, pulled up a chair beside Jake’s bed and grabbed his hand. “It’s going to be okay buddy, you’re going to make it, don’t worry I’ll get Mrs. Smuts to give us another extension!”. “Funny, second time I’ve been here today cause’ of you!“ ,Adam laughed and then his eyes welled up with tears, as he dropped Jake’s hand and got up to leave. “I’m sorry Mrs. Saddler, I have to go… you understand… I..” Adam couldn’t speak anymore, and just left the room.

Just then there was a stir of movement, and Jake started to wake up. “M..mom?” Jake whispered. There was a slight gleam in his eye, as if he was glad to see her. Mrs. Saddler just stared at her son, wondering what to do, and then she moved forward just a little. She then hesitated and stood frozen where she was, “I just came to see that you were alright!”. The smile on Jake’s face vanished, and the gleam in his eye turned to a tear. “But mom, I…you…”, his voice trailed off.

Mrs. Saddler was in pain, it was clear by the uncertainty in her face. She didn’t know what to do, but so much had been said earlier that she wasn’t ready to forgive yet. After one last look at her son, she turned and walked out the door, and then pressed the button for the elevator. Once the elevator came, she got in side and pressed her back up against the wall, and then sobbed.

Her face fell into her hands and she slid down the wall onto the floor. She was a wreck, and everything was so complicated right now. She really wanted to be a good mother, but she just couldn’t get over that fact that her son was gay. It would definitely take time, and she tried to pull herself together for the moment. She dried her eyes and adjusted her hair, and as the elevator doors opened, she faked a smile and walked out.

Just as the elevator doors were closing, a hand stopped them, it was Steve and he got into the elevator. He didn’t know what he was doing, but he felt that he should at least go and check on Jake, or at least, that’s what he kept telling himself. He felt stupid, Jake wasn’t even his friend, he had just been bullying him this morning at school, why was he still here? Something was pulling him up to that room, and he decided to just go with it.

Jake was slumped over in his bed, eyes red from crying silently. He was so upset with him mom, he thought that she had changed her mind, and that love would fix their relationship. Now he didn’t know what to do, his life seemed to be falling apart right before his eyes. Just as he was about to turn out his light, and catch some sleep he heard a shuffling near the door.

Jake rolled over just slightly, and saw something he did not expect. Steve had just walked in the door, and then walked back out, and then back in, and then back out. Just as Steve was about to leave again, Jake decided to inquire about what he was doing. “Well, are you coming in or going out, because I was going to try and sleep”. Steve suddenly looked up, eyes wide, apparently he didn’t know Jake was awake.

“Oh I was just… I mean I wasn’t… I just wanted to, I don’t know what I’m..”. Steve seemed awfully nervous, and Jake thought it was actually kind of cute. “Well you might as well come in so you can tell me what happened, all I remember is slipping”. Steve looked uncomfortable, like he didn’t want to talk about it. “I mean, what are you doing here? I mean, that’s not what I mean, I just…”, now Jake was having trouble too. “I don’t know, I just wanted to see if you were ok, that’s all, I’m leaving now!” Steve seemed irritated, almost angry.

Jake tried to be sympathetic, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset..”, “You didn’t!” Steve growled. “Wait, what’s that you’ve got there?”, Jake noticed that Steve was hiding something behind his back. “It’s nothing, I don’t even have anything!”, there was a hint of red in Steve’s cheeks. “I definitely see something there, c’mon what is it!”. Jake was awfully curious now, and was pressuring Steve into showing him. “Alright! I um…I… I got this for you at the gift shop, I don’t know ok? I just did”.

Steve was talking really fast, and Jake could tell he was nervous, but he didn’t care. “You… you got this.. For..me? I…I..thanks?”. Jake was sort of shocked, was this the same Steve, the one who had just slammed him up against the locker?. Steve placed a little stuffed football onto Jake’s nightstand and then proceeded to leave. “I’m glad you’re ok, that’s all I wanted, so… bye!”, Steve turned and started walking to the door, but paused. “Oh and if you tell anyone at school that I got you that, you’re dead!”.

Steve then went to go out the door, but bumped into a cart that was beside the door and stumbled backwards. He hit the doorframe and then regained his balance and huffed out. Jake just chuckled to himself, and then picked up the stuffed football, throwing it up into the air and catching it again. He wasn’t sure what to make of all this, but it was nice to have a happy moment amidst all his family drama.

A week later, Jake was allowed to leave the hospital and he walked out the door taking a breath of fresh air. It was so nice to be out of the hospital bed and to be able to move again. A nurse came up to him and had him sign a release form, “I assume someone is coming to pick you up?”. Jake’s heart sank a little, “Oh, no I just live a few blocks from here, I’m going to walk, you know the fresh air and all!”. The nurse gave a heartfelt expression and then walked back into the hospital with the paperwork Jake signed.

Jake started out on his walk, sad that his mother still wasn’t talking to him, but even more worried about the fact that he had nowhere to go. Luckily he knew that he was always welcome at his best friend Adam’s house, and he decided that he was desperate enough to ask the favor. When he finally got to Adam’s house, he rang the doorbell but no one seemed to answer. He could hear music coming from inside so he knew someone must be home. He tried the doorbell again, and still no answer she he decided he would check around back.

It could be possible that Adam was outside in the backyard, and so Jake went around the side of the house. He opened the gate to the back yard, and then saw that the light was on in Adam’s room. He walked up to the window and was just about to bang on it when he was what Adam was doing. Jake was so shocked that he turned away and hid against the wall. Adam was laying on his bed, with the music blasting, jerking himself off to some picture he was holding.

Jake was so nervous, he shouldn’t be seeing this, Adam deserves his privacy, and there was no way the he should find this arousing. However, Jake felt that he just needed one more look, he was so curious. He slowly raised his head up, just peering into the window. Adam was sprawled out on the bed, going at it, and it was hot. Jake felt so guilty but so turned on at the same time. He was curious what the picture was, some hot girl no doubt.

Just as Adam started to arch his back and moan really loudly, Jake shifted his foot and stepped on a twig, snapping it. “Oh crap!” He whispered, as Adam looked over at the window. Jake ducked down as fast as he could, but Adam was now suspicious. He got up off his bed and started to walk towards the window. Jake crawled on the ground and just as Adam looked out the window Jake turned the corner, disappearing out of sight.

Adam looked both ways, but saw no one and decided to let his suspicions slide. He went back to his bed and proceeded to finish what he had started, going at it again. Jake was around the corner of the house, breathing hard, thinking about what had just happened, and how he was almost caught. “Oh.. My.. God!! Uhhhnnnnnn!”, Jake heard a loud moan and knew that Adam was done, the music then stopped and he heard a rustling in Adam’s bedroom.

Jake quickly went around to the front door and rang the doorbell again. There was a shifting of movement inside the house, and the then door opened. “Oh, Jake hey man, what’s up?”, Jake could totally see that Adam still had a hard-on but pretended not to notice. “Oh hey man, I was just wondering, My mom sort of, kind of kicked me out..”. Adam smiled, “Then it’s settled you’ll stay here for as long as you need to!”. Jake was so grateful that Adam was so understanding.

“Thanks so much man, I don’t know what I’d do without you!”, Adam just smiled and signaled him into the house. Jake took a seat on the couch and Adam brought some glasses and some pop, and set them down on the table. “Thirsty?” he asked. Jake took the pop and poured himself a glass, “Thanks!”. “I’ll be right back I just have to get something from my room” Adam said, and he left down the hallway.

Jake turned on the television, and browsed around, so grateful that he had a place to stay. Adam slipped into his room, peering over his shoulder to make sure no one was looking. He picked up the tissue he had just used and tossed it into the garbage, bumping the picture he was jacking to onto the floor. Adam went to pick up the picture and then looked at it, smiling to himself. His finger slid over it‘s surface, almost caressing it, after all it was such a good picture of Jake. With that he opened his beside drawer and put the picture inside, and then walked out of his bedroom with a smile on his face.

Chapter 4: Closer to the truth

Word of Jake’s escapade on the bridge’s ledge had gotten around school fast and he was really getting sick of the dirty looks and whispering. “Man, this is so embarrassing, as if I wasn’t a loser before!”, Jake sighed to himself, as he walked to his locker with Adam. “Man, don’t worry about it, who cares what they think anyways, let them talk!”.

Adam had somewhat of a carefree personality, if you could call it that. He was spontaneous and quirky and really didn’t care what people thought of him. He was the complete opposite of Jake, who was quite shy and self-conscious. “You have to just learn to roll with the punches, you know? Deal with what life hands your way…”, Adam’s voice trailed off.

Jake could hear Adam’s voice continuing on in the distance but was momentarily distracted. He looked over across the hallway and saw Steve walking to class with his posse, looking as gorgeous as always. Steve was laughing and talking with his buddies and Jake just couldn’t take his eyes off him. Suddenly Steve looked over at Jake and Adam standing by the lockers.

Jake smiled at Steve and did a sort of nod, acknowledging him. Steve just shot Jake a dirty look and then continued talking to his buddies, disappearing out of sight. Jake just sighed, “Just got to try something new you know, like creamed corn or deviled eggs, dude, are you even listening to me?”. Adam pushed Jake's arm snapping him out of his thought process, “Yes, I heard! Rolling with the punches and deviled eggs, gotcha!”.

Adam just shook his head and then chuckled to himself, and the two set off for class. They sat down at their desks respectively and then waited to see what was on the agenda for today. “Class is now in session!” Mrs. Smuts screamed, catching several students of guard causing them to jump. “Today class we are going to be starting an aspects of life project, that we will be working on for the next week”. Mrs. Smuts seemed as frazzled as ever, was she shouted with a twitch in her eye.

“We will be covering aspects such as families, careers and marriage, and you will be in partners”. Mrs. Smuts seemed to shudder at the thought, but then regained her composure. Jake looked over at Adam, and they both knew what the other was thinking. They thought they could just work together and do up an awesome project. “I will be choosing the pairs!” Mrs. Smuts screamed, and then Jake and Adam exchanged defeated glances.

“Let’s see, Marcy and Dean you will play a married couple”, Marcy looked at Dean shyly. “Dorothy, you will be a pregnant woman out of wedlock, Mike you’ll be the father!” Mike and Dorothy exchanged awkward glances. “Jane you will play a successful career woman who is looking for love, and you find Adam!”. Adam shrugged, looking at Jake’s defeated face. “Steve you will be working with Jake Saddler, and you two will be playing the same-sex couple!”.

Jake’s nearly fell off his chair, as the words escaped Mrs. Smuts’ lips. Jake looked over at Steve who looked utterly disgusted, his friends all teasing, and laughing at him. Jake couldn’t believe it, this was a little too close to home for him, and he was now really nervous about this project. And on top of that working with Steve was going to be a nightmare, this could not go over well.

Mrs. Smuts finished handing out the projects, which also included Lily and Boris being nudists who frequented a clothing optional beach, and Jim being the lonely bachelor who got fired from his job. Mrs. Smuts sure had an interesting take on the “aspects of life”. After class was over Jake decided to approach Steve in the hallway, a bold move considering the last time this happened he was pinned up against a locker.

“Hey Steve, so about this project?” Jake softly asked, Steve did not look happy. “Why do we have to get stuck with the weird topic? This is going to be sick!”. Steve’s response was not the most kind, but Jake expected that. “Well, that’s what we’ve got, so do you want to come over to my….” Jake trailed off. “What? Come over where?” Steve seemed literally confused. “Actually do you mind if we work on this at your house, because we’re…..getting work done at mine and it’s a mess right now!”.

Jake tried to hide the fact that at the moment he didn’t have a real “home”, it was too painful to admit.
“Sure whatever, just don’t tell anyone I let you come over, ok?” Steve gave Jake a threatening look, and Jake agreed. The two went out to the parking lot, where they approached Steve’s car. It was really nice, a convertible type sports car, with a nice red paint job. It also looked extremely expensive, but Steve did have really wealthy parents, so it wasn’t that out of the ordinary.

“Nice car man!” Jake pronounced, trying to sound cool, “Yea whatever, it’s alright!”. Steve seemed used to this kind of lifestyle and didn’t realize that not everyone gets to ride in style like this. They started driving out of the parking lot and suddenly Steve spotted a few of his friends. “Duck!” Steve yelled, and in a panic grabbed Jake and pushed him downwards not realizing where Jake was going.

Jake’s face was forced downwards, to his surprise just inches from Steve’s crotch. This was definitely an awkward moment, and it seemed Steve didn’t realize just where Jake’s face was. Steve was too busy making sure his friends didn’t see, that he didn’t notice but Jake was definitely getting a mouthful. Jake didn’t know how to react and just kind of tried to look away, and not alert Steve’s attention, but he could see a definite bulge in Steve’s jeans.

Once Steve had waved to his friends and they had passed Jake quickly got up hoping Steve wouldn’t notice. Luckily he didn’t , much to Jake’s relief and the two just continued driving to Steve’s house. Upon arriving at Steve’s, Jake could clearly see just how rich Steve’s parents were. The house was so enormous it was a mansion, almost a palace. Jake had never seen anything so big, there was a gate and there were windows everywhere. There was a grand entrance way, a 5 car garage and lovely landscaping., as well as a large fountain as the focal point. The house seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see on both sides, and Jake was almost dizzy comprehending it.

“Oh my gosh, this is your house?”, Jake’s mouth was agape. “Yeah? What’s the big deal?”, Steve was very nonchalant about the whole thing. “Oh nothing!” Jake just chuckled to himself, still awestruck from the sight. Steve led him in the door, through a grand entranceway, and then up a spiral staircase, down a hallway and through a door. The two entered an extremely large room with enormous windows letting beautiful natural light in.

There was a large bed in the middle against the wall, posters all around, a computer and a surf board in the corner. There was a shelf with a lot of awards and trophies on it, all from athletics no doubt. This room was almost as big as Jake’s living room and kitchen put together, he couldn’t believe that it was Steve’s bedroom. “Wow Steve, this room is enormous, you can run laps around it”, Jake chuckled, and Steve didn’t look amused. “So how are we going to do this? I don’t know anything about…I don’t know where to get the info, or.. what info there is?”

Steve was clearly uncomfortable, but Jake would try and find a way to make the project bearable for both. “We could just Google homosexuality I guess?” Jake was trying to make suggestions as if he was as clueless as Steve. “I have to use the bathroom, I’ll be right back, you Google it or whatever!” and with that Steve trumped out of the room in a huff. Jake didn’t have a computer at home, but had used the one at school and was kind of familiar with it.

Once Jake figured out how to open up the internet, he tried to find a link to the Google website, and in doing so accidentally clicked on internet history. Jake was about to close it when something caught his eye, and he was now curious as to what sites Steve visited. Jake knew that this wasn’t very polite of himself to be snooping around on Steve’s computer but he was just so curious. There were sites about sports, and something to do with cooking, fairly normal things. Also an online gaming site, and something about cars, nothing really that interesting.

But then Jake scrolled down to the bottom of the history links and saw something that made his heart skip a beat. “Homosexuality and you?” Jake said aloud, almost in disbelief. He looked over his shoulder at the door, to see if Steve was near and then click on the link. He was directed to an informative-type website about homosexuality.

Jake was scanning the headline, “How do I know if I’m gay?”, he didn’t know what to think or make of all this. Just then he heard a rustling in the hall and tried desperately to close the window, but to no avail. The window maximized just as Steve walked in. Jake could clearly see Steve’s face drop and he looked like he was going to explode. “I was just doing Google searches and this came up, it’s got some good information for our project!” Jake quickly blurted out, noticing that Steve’s face changed from anger to relief.

“Alright well let’s start writing, we’ll take notes and get all our info now and then put the project together later”. Steve was surprisingly calm for the rest of the researching and info gathering, much to Jake’s surprise who thought he would be reeling in disgust. The thought of what he had seen earlier was still fresh in Jake’s mind and he just wasn’t comprehending it. There was no way that the most popular jock in school could be gay, could he?

“Well, that’s it we’ve got more than enough information to make a first rate project, I’ll see you out ok?”. Steve seemed kind of anxious to get Jake to leave, but Jake didn’t want to go, not just yet. “Hey man I’m kind of thirsty, think I could catch a drink?”, Jake tried to be as sincere as possible. “Oh, um.. Sure c’mon then!”, and with that Steve led him to the kitchen. “Your kitchen is upstairs?” Jake questioned, “Yeah well this is just the closest one, we actually have four”. Jake was not at all surprised, he now knew to expect everything in large portions in this house.

“So what do you want, we’ve got pop, water, juice,…beer?”, Steve looked up at Jake curiously. “Oh, um… water is fine”, Jake just smiled and nodded, as Steve handed him a bottle of water. The two then walked towards the door, as Jake was getting ready to leave. “Look man, about the other day, on the.. bridge?” Jake was kind of half-whispering, incase Steve got angered. “Yea, whatever! It’s in the past, so let’s keep it that way!” Steve did seem to want to dismiss the subject hastily. “No man, really I just want to thank you for stopping and trying to stop me, and also for taking me to the hospital”.

The look on Steve’s face changed, from ignorance to slight sadness. Jake could tell there was pain in Steve’s eyes, as he gauged Steve for a reaction. “Look, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, that’s all!”. Jake decided not to press the issue, in hopes that Steve would calm down a little. “So, I was wondering, could I maybe get a ride back to school, my house is really far from here?”. It would have taken Jake hours to get home since Steve’s house was up in the wealthy hillside of town, and Adam’s was down in the suburbs. “Sure, whatever!” Steve replied, and the two took off back towards school.

Once they arrived at the school Jake climbed out of the car, and bid Steve goodbye. Steve then took off down the road leaving Jake to walk home alone. It was starting to get dark and without a jacket, the cold night air was nipping at his exposed skin. As he continued walking there wasn’t much in the way of street lighting and he was struggling to see ahead of him. He knew the way off by heart but still got a bit confused when it was so dark.

Suddenly Jake heard something behind him, like footsteps. He started to get nervous and tried walking a little faster when a voice behind him said “What’s the matter, don’t you want to have a little fun?”. The voice was scruffy and very creepy, and Jake turned around only to be met with a tough looking punk. “Look man I don’t want any trouble ok?” Jake’s voice was shaky, his fear was definitely showing through.

“Oh, neither do I, so don’t give me any ok?” and with that the thug lunged forward prompting Jake to start to run. There wasn’t enough time however and Jake half stumbled tripping on his own foot. The thug then grabbed Jake, forcing him backwards and then wrapped his arm around Jake’s neck. “Please, please stop! Let me go!” Jake was screaming, but no one seemed to hear. “Just give me your money and you won’t get hurt!” The thug was serious and Jake frantically grasped for his wallet. “H..here, t.. take it!” Jake sputtered and as he handed the wallet over the thug noticed a watch that was around Jake’s wrist.

“Give me that watch, now!” the thug tightened his grip on Jake’s throat. “No, please it was a gift from my dad!, you can have anything else!”. The thug squeezed really hard on Jake’s throat causing him to cough and gasp for air. Jake just surrendered and started taking off his watch and then gave it to the mugger. Suddenly a car appeared driving down the road, catching the pair off guard. “Hey Jake, we forgot to schedule…what the hell?”, the voice came from inside the car, which screeched to a halt in front of the two men.

“Get the hell away from him” Steve’s voice boomed, and the mugger froze in terror. “Sorry kid, it’s been fun but I gotta go!” and with that he kneed Jake in the stomach and fled, surprisingly fast. Steve ran over to Jake who was curled up on the ground, clutching his stomach and gasping for air. “Oh my god, man are you ok? What happened??”, Steve’s voice was panicked as he pressed Jake for information. Jake couldn’t really talk so he gasped out words, while fighting back tears.

“I… was… mugged!” Jake could barely get out an audible sentence, and Steve hoisted him to his feet. “Man, I’m so sorry, I should have just taken you all the way home! Oh man..”, Steve was now fidgeting and pacing back and forth, looking at Jake every few seconds and then looking away. Once Jake regained his breath and a little bit of composure, he managed to slur “Dude, it’s not your fault, this is a bad neighborhood, and I should have been looking out better”.

Steve still seemed to be holding himself responsible, and was clearly grief stricken. “So how come you are headed this way, at this time of night?” Jake asked, “I was just going to say we forgot to schedule a time to work some more on the project, but I saw you, and the guy and oh man..”. Steve trailed off, “Don’t worry man, it isn’t your fault! This isn’t the first time this has happened, I’m kind of used to it in this part of town!”. Jake was trying to comfort Steve, but this only seemed to make things worse.

“What the hell, no one should be used to getting mugged that’s awful!” Steve was obviously just realizing that there was life outside of the rich gated community that he lived in. “It just sucks though because he got my dad’s watch. Before my dad left he gave me his watch as sort of something to remember him by. It was really important to me, but now it’s gone!”. Steve could see that Jake was fighting back tears and didn’t quite know what to do, so he put his arm around Jake and gave him a sort of comforting shake.

“I really don’t know what to say, should we like call the police or something?”, Jake looked up at Steve. “No, they’ll never catch him, and I’m alright so it’s not important enough to get the cops”. Steve was staring at Jake, and all Jake could see were those piercing blue eyes, looking right through him again. Jake just sighed and then kind of realized the whole situation around him, and got scared. All the emotion of the mugging and thinking about his father, and having Steve’s arm around him and those blue eyes were too much and he jumped suddenly.

“Oh, um thanks man for everything, I’ve got to get home, my mom will be worried sick!” and with that Jake flung Steve’s arm off his shoulder and bolted into a run down the sidewalk. “Wait, I can give you a ….. ride?” Steve watched as Jake disappeared out of sight, and then just got back into his car and sat there, taking this all in. There were so many thoughts inside his head, and also strange feelings that he didn’t quite understand. He started the engine and then quietly make the long drive back home.

Chapter 5: Open one door, close another

Jake awoke suddenly in his sleep, sweating and breathing hard. He was having another bad dream, which seemed to be occurring more and more frequently these days. He rolled over and noticed that Adam was awake, looking up at the ceiling. “Another nightmare?” Adam blurted out, catching Jake off guard. “Y..yeah! How did you know?” Jake was curious, had he blurted out something incriminating in his sleep?

“You just, you know mumble, and roll, I don’t know, but you kinda scare me!”. Adam hadn’t moved from his position and was still staring at the ceiling. “Um, Adam?” Jake whispered, “Yeah?”, Adam now turned onto his side to face Jake. “Is everything alright, you seem kind of distant these days!”, Jake was now staring into Adam’s eyes, searching for some reasoning. “Yeah, I’m fine, I don’t know… I was just wondering is all..”.

Jake was slightly confused, “What were you wondering about, you can tell me, we’re best friends remember!”. Jake was still staring intently at Adam, trying to find out what was happening. “I just was wondering about life, you know? Like is there someone out there, for everyone?”. Jake sighed a little in relief, for he had feared that Adam was going to confront him about his sexuality.

“Dude, I donno, but I think that there is someone out there for everyone!”, Jake tried his best to instill confidence. “But how do you know, like, you know? When you’ve found them?”, Adam’s voice was slightly shaky, and he was staring at Jake with a sort of glazed look. “Well, I think you just know, you can feel it, there’s… something there?”.

Jake actually really didn’t know what to say, he had never experienced any sort of romantic relationship. “Adam, tell me the truth, you like someone don’t you!”, Jake was now half grinning, intent on finding out what his best friend was hiding. “N..no, I just, well … I don’t know, maybe?”, Adam’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Aw dude, you have to tell me who is it? I know, it’s Jane Hotchkiss isn’t it! You dog you!”.

Adam knew very well that it wasn’t Jane Hotchkiss, but he decided to play along. “Well I’m not saying anything, but man if you find that one person, the one for you, what should you do about it?” Adam sighed.
“Well, you know what, if they are the one, then you have to go for it! Let them know, open their eyes, if they are right in front of you, you might as well!”.

Jake had no idea what he was asking Adam to do, and he didn’t know how accurate his “right in front of you” statement had really been. Adam half grinned and then rolled over to the other side, “Thanks Jake, I know exactly what I should do now, you’re the best, night bro!”. Jake smiled silently to himself, “No problem man!”, Jake was now considering his own advice, could he have found someone for himself? Jake was pondering Steve’s eyes again, as he drifted back off to sleep, could it be possible that Steve was the one for him? He closed his eyes and this time had a very pleasant dream for once.

Monday morning was here again, and it was time for school, something that Jake didn’t always look forward to. However, there was always one good thing about going to school, Jake would get to see Steve, in all his gorgeousness, walking down the hall. He also saw him at lunch and in class and had been seeing him a lot after school, as they had just finished up their project on same-sex marriage. Yes, Jake was now spending more time with Steve than he ever had before, and it was definitely making school a little more bearable.

Jake was sitting down at his desk in Mrs. Smuts classroom, he saw Adam sitting over with Jane Hotchkiss. They were preparing for their presentation, which was also what Jake was supposed to be doing, but Steve was no where in sight. Suddenly Steve marched through the doors, and he looked in a huff. “Hey Steve, awesome, you made it! Let’s get started!” Jake tried to be friendly, “Whatever, let’s just get this over with!”. Steve seemed angered by something, and Jake didn’t dare pry for fear of another incident like the locker.

Several minutes passed, as did several presentations, “Thank you that was err….. different, I mean lovely Adam and Jane!” Mrs. Smuts shrieked with an awkward glee. “Next up, Jake Saddler and Steve Roberts, ah yes the same-sex couple”, Mrs. Smuts articulated the words, as if condemning them. Jake and Steve got their notes together and got their poster board mounted on the chalkboard, and then began with the presentation that they had planned, only Steve wasn’t going according to plan. “Same-sex marriages are just like normal marriages except instead of a man and a woman, it’s a man and a man, or a woman and a woman” Jake began opening up the project, “Same-sex marriages are … well they are..” Steve was struggling to say his lines.

“Normal, they are normal” Jake whispered to Steve, trying to help him. “They are condemned by the bible, and thought to be a sin” Steve blurted out, shocking Jake. “Yes for our project today we are going to debate same-sex marriage, I’m on the con side, and Jake here is clearly batting for the other team”. This prompted everyone to giggle and scoff, and Jake just turned beat red.

“Steve, what are you doing!” Jake whispered fiercely, “Just go with it!” Steve smiled maliciously. “Same-sex marriages are a sin, and sins are morally wrong as stated in the bible…” Steve was on a rampage, and Jake wouldn’t have any of it. “Actually” Jake just cut Steve off, “Same-sex marriages are normal, and should be treated with the same respect and equality as any marriage, they are about love, just like all marriages”. Jakes voice was rising, and people could tell he was passionate about the subject.

Now there were whispers and dirty looks being passed around in the audience, and everyone was listening intently to see what Steve would do next. “In my personal opinion, I think that same-sex marriage is gross, because gay people are wrong and shouldn't get privileges like marriage, which is ours!” Steve smirked to one of his friends in the audience, prompting Jake’s eye to twitch as he was holding back his anger.

“I think that equality is vital for every member of society, and to have equality, same-sex marriage must be allowed”, Jake was now getting angry, and Mrs. Smuts had had enough. “Alright boys, this isn’t really the kind of project I had in mind…” Jake just cut her off. “People like Steve here don’t quite understand equality, the elevator would have to go all the way to the top for that!” Jake leered at Steve. “Well of course you would promote same-sex marriage Jake, if they don’t legalize it then you’ll NEVER be able to get MARRIED!!!” Steve looked at Jake with evil in his eyes.

Jake once again looked into Steve’s blue eyes, and this time didn’t find comfort, he found anger and hatred. “Faaaaggg!” Steve taunted, and that was it the last straw, Jake finally snapped and with all his might pulled his fist back. He released his fist with all the strength he had in him, and in the blink of an eye it connected with Steve’s face. Everyone in the audience gasped, and the whole scene seemed to happen in slow motion.

Steve flew backwards, a disgruntled look on his face, he slammed into the blackboard, and then awkwardly rebounded onto the floor. He was totally caught off guard and staggered around on his hands and knees, clutching his now wounded face. “Why don’t you tell everyone you just got you ASS kicked by a FAG!” Jake screamed and then stormed out of the classroom.

He stormed down the hallway towards the outside doors, he just wanted to go and get away from here. Adam bolted out of the classroom door some steps behind him and ran to catch up with Jake. “Hey man, come back here!” Adam was shouting, but Jake didn’t stop, he just plowed through the doors, out into the crisp afternoon air. Adam followed him, attempting to calm his friend down “Jake, please man, wait! Ignore Steve he’s a jerk! Man WAIT!”

Adam then grabbed Jake’s shoulder trying to stop him. “Look man, I have something that I need to tell you, remember when we talked last night about soul mates?“ Jake just turned around and shoved Adam backwards. “Get away from me, I just want to be alone!” Jake screamed and then started to run off. Adam just looked shocked, his eyes misting up, he had never seen Jake this angry and he was a bit frightened. Maybe he and Jake were not soul mates after all, Adam wiped his now wet eyes, and headed back into the school.

It was now the evening and Adam sat on the couch beside the phone waiting intently. Adam’s parents were in the kitchen quietly talking, also slightly worried that Jake was gone. Adam just wanted to hear the phone ring, to know that Jake was alright, he feared another suicide attempt because of what had happened today. After all these years of thinking that he himself, could be gay, Adam now found out that Jake might be gay too! Adam couldn’t help but hope that maybe it was mean to be, but remembered earlier, how Jake had just thrown him aside. Adam chased the foolish thoughts out of his head, and continued waiting for the phone.

Jake was pacing behind the bushes in front of Steve’s mansion, not exactly knowing why he was there. It was dark, and Jake had spent the whole day walking here thinking about the day’s events, and reflecting on what had just happened. Now pretty much everyone at school knew they Jake was gay, so his life was about to get a lot harder, but he had also beat up the toughest guy in school which was a plus. Jake had had a lot of time to think and had calmed down, but was now puzzled as to why he was waiting here.

Steve was the last person Jake wanted to see, he was a pompous, egotistical pig, and part of Jake wanted to deck him again. Another part of Jake, just wanted to see those eyes, when they sparkled with flecks of blue and green, staring right through him, comforting him. Jake could see the light was on in Steve’s room, and there a lattice with vines growing on it the reached all the way up to Steve’s balcony. He didn’t want to go, but something was pulling Jake to that room, and to Steve, he had to face him once more.

Jake was climbing up the lattice which was very unstable, and Steve’s balcony was on the second story. Finally he reached the balcony’s ledge and heaved himself over it, hitting the ground with a thud.. Hoping that he didn’t disturb Steve, Jake crept to a window which was open and saw that Steve was browsing the computer, Jake recognized the familiar colors of that website he had earlier discovered.

Curious as to what Steve was really doing, Jake tried to get a really good look, and accidentally fell through the window, landing on Steve’s bedroom floor. This was it, Jake knew he was done for, Steve flew around and was shocked to see Jake on his floor, helpless. He quickly shut the monitor off and walked over to Jake. “What the hell are you doing in my room, where did you come from!?” Steve was shouting and Jake knew that he was going to die.

“I..I..I don’t..I don’t know!” Jake was stuttering, “I came, to.. To see you, we need to talk!”. Jake couldn’t believe what he had just said, he wasn’t usually this brave. “We have nothing to talk about!” Steve replied, and heaved Jake up, placing him on his feet. “Thanks” Jake whispered, and then got a sudden boost of confidence, “Steve, what the hell was that in class today, we rehearsed that project for like a week!”.

Jake turned to look at Steve, and for the first time saw the damage that he had inflicted. “Oh my god, Steve your face! I.. I’m so sorry!” Jake was genuinely sorry, as it appeared that Steve had a broken nose, but couldn’t help but chuckle. “What’s so funny?” Steve demanded, “Nothing it’s just, I..I kicked your ass, now there’s a role reversal if I ever saw one!”. Jake now burst our laughing, and even Steve chuckled to himself, “Well it’s not going to happen again! That was a one time thing!” Steve half chuckled.

Jake and Steve looked at each other, recovering from their laughter, their eyes meeting. There was a pause as they both looked into each others eyes, and then Steve turned away, and they slipped back into reality. “Thanks for telling the whole class I’m gay!” Jake scolded, “So you are?” Steve asked. “You know, I’m not going to lie to you, yea I am, and that stunt you pulled in class really bothered me!” Jake was now a little more melancholy. “I..I know, man I just..I donno!” Steve tried to be sympathetic, something he was particularly good at pulling off.

“You know, with the project, and all the time we were spending together, I just thought we were actually becoming friends, but I mean you’re Steve Roberts, the school Jock, I should have expected as much!” Jake was ranting and Steve didn’t know what to say. “Dude, you know I have a reputation to uphold, and I, you know, can’t just start hanging out with…” Steve stopped, “With what, queers?” Jake snapped. “Dude it isn’t even like that, today I just, it was my reputation!” Steve tried to make Jake understand, but Jake was cautious.

“Yes, your mighty reputation, well it’s sad that your reputation is at the cost of others misery!” Jake started to get up, to leave but Steve stopped him. “Jake, I… all my friends we just goof off, they are all jocks, but I had never met anyone like you, that I could just hang with, I didn’t know how to act!” Steve's voice had slightly changed and Jake noticed, looking up at Steve.

“Steve, you’re right! You didn’t know how to act, I should have seen this coming, I know exactly what you are going through!” Jake was now getting a revelation, “I know what it’s like to have these weird new feelings, and not know how to explain them!”. “What are you talking about man, I don’t have any new feelings, man you’re crazy!” Steve was now defensive. Jake was now almost talking to himself, not even acknowledging Steve, “Yes, it all makes sense, the way you were acting, today’s class, I should have seen it earlier, you’re in denial!”. Steve looked at Jake with a worried glance, and Jake half smiled.

“Denial what the hell are you talking about? I think maybe you should go!” Steve was nervous and Jake could tell. “Steve…?” Jake said calmly, “What!” Steve snapped back, “I saw the website…, last week, I told you that I found it searching for the project, but that wasn’t true”. Steve looked livid, he didn’t know how to react, “You were browsing through my stuff, spying on me, I’m going to kill you!”. Steve lunged at Jake, but Jake quickly rolled to the other side of the bed, and then stood on the floor facing Steve.

The bed was in between them, and Steve was staring at Jake with angry eyes. Steve tried to go right but so did Jake, then Steve tried to go left and so did Jake, this just wasn’t going to work. “Jake, that page was just for the project, I think you got the wrong idea about it, that’s all it was!, Steve was trying to act cool. “Steve, we didn’t have the project yet, we got it that day, and you looked at that page weeks before!” Jake was cautious as Steve lunged again, missing.

“Well, what the hell gives you the right to look at my private stuff, you’re a snoop!” Steve shouted and tried to go left again. “You’re right, I never should have looked, and man I’m so sorry! But I did see what I saw, and I’m here if you want to talk about it!” Jake pleaded, trying to calm Steve down, also going left so Steve couldn’t get him. “There isn’t anything to talk about, that was nothing, I clicked on the wrong link and that came up!” Steve was now slowing down, and seemed less angry.

“Steve it wasn’t porn, it was an educational website, and I remember the headline ‘How do I know If I’m Gay?’ Man, just talk to me!” Jake was trying to rationalize with Steve, who seemed more defeated now than angry. Jake watched as Steve stumbled and then slowly sat down on the bed’s edge, his head sulking down. “Steve?” Jake whispered, as he walked over to Steve on the other side, seeing what looked like a tear fall from Steve’s hanging head.

Jake put his hand on Steve’s shoulder, comfortingly, but Steve brushed it off. “You want to talk about it?” Jake asked, and Steve looked up, brushing his eye with his hand, and with a big intake of breath started to talk. “I donno man, it was like five years ago, I was on the swimming team and my friend Noah was too.”
Jake sat listening intently, he couldn’t believe that Steve Roberts was actually opening up to him.

“We had been friends for a while, and we were always competing with each other for fun, messing around and trying to out swim each other, you know? And then one day I was looking at him and I felt weird, there was some sort of feeling in the pit of my stomach, like nervousness almost. My dad told me that guys only get this feeling when they look at girls, so I didn’t understand why I was getting this feeling when I looked at Noah.

Anyways , I kept feeling this every time I was around him, and it changed everything, we couldn’t hang out the same way anymore or compete, it was too weird. I didn’t want to be around him, for fear of getting the feeling or worse, you know..” Steve looked down at his pants, and Jake knew what he meant. “So we got more and more distant, which was really hard, because I think I started to like him, as more than friends.

This didn’t last for too much longer though, because Noah had to move away to the other side of the country with his parents, something business related. And I felt really sad that day like I had lost something important to me. After that I suppressed the feelings, dated girls, acted like a normal guy but it’s all an act, and it’s getting hard to keep it up.”

Jake was shocked, but could totally relate to Steve and his troubles, “Steve, I know exactly what you are feeling, I’ve been through it all, and you aren’t alone, I’m here for you!”. Jake really knew that he could relate because he was feeling that nervousness in his stomach for Steve, and had ever since that day in class.
“I don’t know what to do man, I mean it’s so hard…” Steve paused, “Why do you have to make it so damn hard!?”. Steve sighed and looked away from Jake, “Why do I…? What are you talking about I haven’t done anything to you, except try and be there for you!” Jake was slightly offended.

“Well what If I don’t want you to be there for me, what If I just don’t want to see you anymore!” Steve's voice was getting slightly louder. “What, that’s insane, I thought we were friends, what’s you’re problem?” Jake insisted on an answer. “Well I don’t want to be your friend, so just get out of my sight!” Steve stood up and pointed to the door, leaving Jake shocked. “Why Steve, WHY?!” Jake couldn’t understand, they seemed to be making such good progress, and everything was looking up for him.

“BECAUSE!!…Because….because now, whenever I’m around you I get that nervous feeling.” And with that Steve turned his face away, and Jake just stared at him in disbelief. “Steve…I..” Jake couldn’t talk, “Just get out of here, go NOW!” Steve shouted and Jake jumped, startled. Jake turned without saying anything and headed for the door, that was it, it was over. Steve looked up, and saw that Jake was leaving and then decided to do something about it.

“Wait,……Jake…” Steve stammered, catching Jake off guard, Jake turned around and looked right at Steve. “What Steve, what do you want!” Jake just stared at Steve, searching for an answer. Steve stormed over to Jake, and gave him a slight nudge. “If you tell anyone at school about what you heard here tonight, you’re a dead man!”, and with that the old Steve was back, and Jake remembered why he was so mad at Steve in the first place.

“Oh you mean, like you did to me!? Like how you told the entire class I was gay and mocked me for it? Now why on earth would I go and do the same thing to you?!” He was shouting and then rolled his eyes, and turned to walk off, but Steve grabbed him by the arm and swung him back around. “I mean it Saddler, if you tell anyone, I will make your life hell, you hear me?!”, “Oh Steve I think that you’ve already taken care of that for me, I’ll never be able to show my face at school again, I might as well return the FAVOUR!”

Jake was now screaming at Steve, all his old rage had returned and Steve was getting just as fed up with Jake’s antics. Steve had had enough and he grabbed Jake’s arms and flung him up against the wall, exactly how he had in the hall that one day. “That’s it Jake, you’re going to pay for this!” Steve shouted at Jake’s face which was just inches from his. “Fine, go ahead like I give a shit!” Jake screamed right back at Steve’s face challenging Steve’s temper.

Steve just stared at Jake, pure rage on in his eyes, and Jake just waited to get exactly what was coming to him, a smack in the face. “Well, what the hell are you waiting for!! Hit me already!!!” Jake screamed and with that Steve slammed Jake up against the wall and locked him into an intense kiss, that neither saw coming. Jake’s eyes bolted open, he couldn’t believe what was going on, but he closed his eyes and kissed back, just as hard as Steve.

The two just stayed there, pressed hard up against the wall, sharing a passionate kiss that was the product of all the tension between the two. Both were venting all their rage, but the kiss was so tender and firm at the same time that you would think they were in love. The clock on the wall chimed as the time flew well past midnight, but Jake didn’t care all he could think about were Steve’s warm lips pressed up against his, being locked between Steve’s muscular arms, and those bright blue eyes he loved so much.

On the other end of town, Adam was watching as the clock on his night side table turned to midnight, he was curled up in a little ball, and was holding the picture of Jake that he had become so fond of. He remembered Jake shoving him away this afternoon, and took it as rejection. As the picture moved back and forth in his hands, a tear hit it, and ran down the glossy paper. Suddenly Adam bolted up and ripped the picture in half throwing it in the garbage, and with that he slowly drifted off to sleep. Adam decided not to believe in soul mates anymore.

So hot. Wow. Oh my god, it is amazing! I love how you develop the story and characters so well! I'd love to see more characters as well, simply to expand on this story (you better never end it or else I will make you eat puppies!).

It gets an "A" for story.
It gets a "B+" for grammar because you make quite a few mistakes that are common over and over, but it's okay.

My, what sticky webs we weave. I think I would like to be liplocked with Steve also, but I feel for Adam as well. In the end, I know Jake will make the right decision as to how his life will continue. Thanks for sharing and let's hear more soon.

Chapter 6: A twist of fate

Jake was still reeling from his kiss with Steve as he drifted off to sleep that night. When he got home Adam was already asleep, and he didn’t dare wake him to tell him the news. Jake had never told Adam that he was gay, and now Adam had to find out in front of the whole class, he would never forgive Jake for that. But Jake didn’t want to think about that, all he could think about was Steve’s warm lips, his strong, muscular body, and his piercing blue eyes.

Jake feared that if he drifted off to sleep, that this would all just be a dream and he would wake up from it all. He just could not believe how things were turning out for him lately. Just weeks ago he was this klutzy and accident prone kid, he caused his best friend to crash his car, and had almost committed suicide. Now he had just kissed the most popular jock in school and nothing could bring him down.

That morning Jake awoke to the bright sunshine streaming through the windows, birds were chirping, and everything seemed eerily perfect. This however would not last for long as Jake would have to face Adam sooner or later. Unfortunately for Jake it was sooner rather than later, and as Jake rose out of bed he saw that Adam’s bed was neatly made, and Adam was no where to be seen.

Jake went to go use the bathroom but found that it was already occupied. He knocked on the door, which opened immediately and was greeted with Adam, looking absolutely furious. Adam bumped into Jake’s shoulder, hard, and scoffed as he walked by. Jake didn’t know what was going on, and thought that Adam must be having one heck of a bad day.

After using the bathroom, and getting all showered and ready for school, Jake came into the kitchen to make some breakfast. Jake loved to have his daily routine of orange juice, a slice of toast and a bowl of cereal, accompanied by reading the daily comics in the paper. Jake grabbed a glass, and then got the orange juice from the fridge, but when he went to pour it, nothing came out.

“Guess we’re all out” Jake shrugged and went to get a slice of bread to toast. Nothing, it appeared that all the bread was gone too, this was an outrage! Jake was now suspicious and went to get his favorite box of cereal, and as he presumed, it wasn’t there. “Oh well, there’s always the comics!” Jake ravaged the newspaper top to bottom, the only thing that was missing was the comics!

“Adam what is going on around…..” Jake looked over at Adam and with a surprise saw him sipping a tall glass of orange juice. Adam also had a slice of freshly buttered toast in front of him, beside his hefty bowl of cereal, as he read none other than the daily comics. Jake just laughed and went over to sit down with Adam. “Guess I was just too slow today!” Jake chuckled, “Guess so…” Adam rolled his eyes and didn’t even look up.

“Um, dude is something wrong? You’ve been acting strange all morning, you want to talk about it?” Jake was trying to find out what might be panging his best friend. Adam considered Jake’s proposal for a moment, this could be his chance to tell Jake everything, he however, decided against it and continued being standoffish. “Nothing I’m fine and dandy!” Adam's tone was clearly sarcastic and Jake knew it.

Adam then looked up at Jake, “Jake, you just took off, you never called, I didn’t know where the heck you were! I was worried sick, you have an emotional crisis, and then just take off? Sounds awfully familiar! I though you might try to kill yourself again!” Adam was freaking out and Jake didn’t know how to react. “Adam, man I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you!” Jake tried to console his wounded friend, but it didn’t seem to be working.

“So, you’re gay?” Adam suddenly blurted out, catching Jake totally off guard. “I, well yes, I am” Jake didn’t know how to reply, and just told him the truth for once. “Dude, It doesn’t bother me that you’re gay, I just wished that you had told me, you know? I mean we’re supposed to be best friends, we tell each other everything!” Adam pondered this for a moment, and then realized that he was guilty of the same crime.

“We’re supposed to tell each other everything, so Jake there’s something I need to tell you” Jake accidentally cut Adam off, before he could finish. “Hold up man, I have to tell you! So I went over to Steve’s house last night, I totally busted that guy’s nose today in class man, awesome eh? He’ll never live it down!” Jake was too excited to let Adam finish, and forgot to ask Adam what he was going to say before. “So isn’t that just awesome!?” Jake repeated, trying to get a response out of Adam, “Yes, just peachy!” Adam retorted sarcastically and with that got up and stormed off.

“Wait man, aren’t we going to school together…” Jake called after Adam, but Adam was gone. Jake could definitely tell that something was up with Adam, and he had to get to the bottom of it. Jake grabbed his school bags and his lunch that Mrs. Dunmore had packed him, and headed towards the front door. As Jake grabbed his jacket he pulled open the front door and was met with a shocking surprise.

“Mom..?” Jake stammered, “What are you? I mean why are you? H..hi” Jake was caught off guard once again, and didn’t know exactly what to say. “Jake dear, can I come in? Can we just talk for a moment? Please?” Mrs. Sadder sounded desperate, and Jake obliged. The two went to the family room, and After Mrs. Saddler greeted Mrs. Dunmore Jake and his mother sat across from each other, just staring.

“Honey, I… about the fight, I just… I was under a lot of stress!” Mrs. Saddler was trying her best to explain what had happened to her son. “It was shocking to find out what you told me, and I reacted like any parent would, but I realize now that I was wrong! I should never have said those things, and I wish that I could take them all back!” Mrs. Saddler was now fighting back tears, and Jake could see this. “Mom, it’s ok, I understand, things were said, we were angry!”

“Oh Jake, I love you honey! I just want you to come home!” and with that Mrs. Saddler burst into sobs of joy as Jake came over and then two embraced in a hug of reconciliation. “I’d love to come home, why don’t we talk about it first thing when I get back from school!” Jake tried not to act too excited, but he was thrilled at the prospect of being back at his own house.

“Oh Jake, why don’t you skip school today and we can have a mother son day out, you can tell me all about what you’ve been doing these past few weeks! What do you say?” Mrs. Saddler looked somewhat desperate and Jake willingly obliged. “Just let me go get changed, and I’ll be right there ok mom?!” and with that Jake disappeared out of sight into the bedroom.

Just then there was a ring on Mrs. Saddler’s cell phone and she answered it hastily. “Hello, Dr. Thompson? Yes, everything is arranged, yes, is everything ready to begin treatment? Excellent! So, I’ll see you around 5:30? Great, anything else? Definitely! Alright Dr. Thompson, you too, goodbye!” Just as she hung up, Jake walked back into the room, “Alright I’m ready, are we good to go?”. Mrs. Saddler looked at Jake with a gleam in her eye, “Yes darling, everything is ready to go!”.

Meanwhile at school, Steve sat in Mrs. Smuts classroom anxiously looking out the window, his mind was clearly elsewhere. “Psst, Adam” Steve whispered, “Did Jake come to school today?”, Adam couldn’t be bothered by Steve’s questions. “Like I give a damn, stop talking to me…ass!” Adam couldn’t believe that way he was acting, it was so uncharacteristic of him, but then again he was really upset. Steve scoffed at Adam’s remark and turned back again to face the board.

Once the school bell rang, Steve quickly bolted out of the classroom and down the hall, he was headed to the parking lot in a hurry. “Ahem, Steve where do you think you are going!?”, Steve stopped dead in his tracks, he knew that voice, it was all too familiar. As Steve turned around he was face to face with one of the most beautiful girls in the whole school.

“Ashley, hi! I’m kind of in a hurry, so if you’ll just excuse me…” Steve was desperately trying to get away, but Ashley wouldn’t have it. “But baby, don’t you want to hang out with me, and take me to the mall?” Ashley put on her best pouty face, and spoke in that whiney tone that one uses when they want to get something.

Ashley Santos was the most popular girl in school, she was the head cheerleader, had an army of followers at her beck and call, and pretty much ran the school. She was head of the leadership class, and also had two of the richest parents in the whole state. Anything that Ashley wanted Ashley got and the word “no” was not in her vocabulary. Ashley Santos also happened to be Steve’s girlfriend, something that Steve had momentarily forgotten.

“Ashley, please I have something really important that I have to do, can’t we go to the mall tomorrow!?”. Steve was pleading with her, he needed to get out of the school, but she protested. “Steeeeeeevvve, I want stuff! Take me to the mall now! Pleeeeeaaasseeee, Steeeeeeeevve!” Her shrill incessant whine was too much and Steve just turned and ran for the door, leaving Ashley in his wake, not a smart move.

“STEVEN ANTHONY ROBERTS you get back here RIGHT NOW!” Ashley screamed prompting everyone in the halls to freeze and look at her. “What are you all staring at??” Ashley screamed, and with that turned on her heel and walked away, nose in the air. If Steve wanted to play hardball, Ashley could definitely play hardball.

Out and around the town, Jake and his mother were enjoying a lovely time together. Jake was telling his mom about school, and the new friend he had made, and about his project and how he represented same-sex marriage. Mrs. Saddler was trying to be as understanding as she could considering the circumstances and managed to hold it together quite nicely.

They had gone shopping and Jake’s mom bought him a nice new outfit for school, and now the two were just finishing up dinner at a nice restaurant. This was a rare occurrence, since the Saddler’s weren’t the wealthiest of families. “Oh Jake this day has just been wonderful, and I am truly so sorry I put you through what I did!” Mrs. Saddler looked genuine, and Jake just placed his hand on hers. “Oh Mom, you know I love you and I know that you’ll always be there for me, you would never do anything to change me!” Jake smiled and finished his pop.

Mrs. Saddler’s smile flinched slightly as she looked from side to side nervously, and then back at Jake, “Right honey, I would never!” and with that the two got up to leave. “Hey mom it’s almost 5:30 I think we should be getting home now?” Jake said to his mom, who responded “Oh Jake, honey can we make one more stop on the way home, I want to show you something!”

“Sure mom, anything!” And Jake smiled at his mom, who half smiled back. Jake was so excited, he was talking to his mom again, which meant the world to him. When she had thrown him out, he thought that he would never speak to her again, but here they were. It was just like it had always been, except now Jake’s mom accepted him for who he was, he didn’t have to be afraid anymore.

Jake was so happy that his mom had realized that Jake was perfect just the way he was, and he was so excited looking forward to their new progressing relationship. “Mom, I just wanted to say, I love you….wait, why are we at that doctor’s facility owned by the church? “ Jake was confused, wondering why they were here as the car pulled up outside the doors of the Waldorf Rehabilitation Center. There was a man in a white medical coat waiting to greet the two outside the car and Jake started to put two and two together.

“Oh my god, mom are you sick! Oh mom you should have told me, what’s wrong? You aren’t dying are you?” Jake’s voice was panicked, he didn’t want to lose his mother, not now when they were just getting close together again. “No, Jake honey, it’s not me who’s sick, it’s you!” Mrs. Saddler was calmly talking to Jake, who stepped out of the car, and went to stand with his mom and the Doctor.

“Hello, Dr. Thompson! Jake? This is doctor Thompson from the Center” Mrs. Saddler tried to introduce Jake to the doctor, but he was too confused. “Mom, I’m sick? What are you talking about?!” Jake’s voice was elevating now, he didn’t know what was happening. “Jake honey, Dr. Thompson here works with confused teenagers like yourself, who are having the wrong feelings, he helps them get back on the normal path.”.

Jake was freaking out now, this wasn’t happening, there was no way that this could be happening. “Mom? What’s going on here, what are we doing here!?” Jake demanded and answer, he half knew, but just wanted to hear it for himself. “Jake honey, after spending some time here, with Dr. Thompson and the crew, you are going to be cured of your “gay” and we can go back to the way things were! We can be happy again!” Mrs. Saddler’s eyes were misting up, she hated seeing her son in agony, but it was the only way.

“Mom I can’t believe this, I thought you had changed, how can you do this to me?” Jake was shouting and Dr. Thompson was attempting to calm him. “Jake, you are broken, and here at the Waldorf Treatment Center, we can fix you!”. Jake looked at Dr. Thompson in disgust, “I’m not broken, it’s you! All of you, you’re deranged! Get away from me, GET AWAY FROM ME!”. Jake turned and ran in the opposite direction, away from his mom and Dr. Thompson,.

“Do something Dr. Thompson! He’s getting away!” Mrs. Saddler was freaking out now, and Dr, Thompson pulled out a radio, into which he said “He’s headed for gate B, sedate him at all costs!”. Jake kept running for the gate, but noticed 3 more people dressed in white like Dr. Thompson approaching him. “Halt, you are to go no further!” One of the men said, “Leave me alone, get out of my way!” Jake was screaming. Just then two of the men grabbed Jake by either arm, and the third stuck a needle into his thigh.

“Oh my god! What was that? What are you doing you sick freaks!?” Everything was now spinning and Jake’s eyelids felt heavy. “You..just wait…when I get you….I’ll…I’ll get you..” Jake was slurring and stumbling around, and then everything went dark. Jake passed out, as Mrs. Saddler and Dr. Thompson ran up to the 3 guards. “Good work!” Dr. Thompson told the orderlies, and he assured Mrs. Saddler that they hadn’t harmed Jake, only put him to sleep.

On the other end of town Steve was driving towards Jake’s house, he had found the address in the phone book. He parked out front and got out of his car, approaching the door. He knocked and rang the doorbell but no one answered, it appeared that no one was home. Steve didn’t know that Jake had been living at Adam’s house recently, and didn’t think to go asking for him there, so he got back in his car and put his head on the steering wheel.

Steve really wanted to see Jake again, after sharing that kiss the other night Steve couldn’t get Jake off his mind. He was also frightened by these feelings, he didn’t want anyone to catch wise of his true sexuality, and so he decided to force his feelings for Jake out of his head and carry on normally. Steve was driving downtown, when he looked in his rearview mirror and saw something that made him jump.

He could see a familiar pink car speeding down the road wildly, straight towards him. “Ashley!” Steve exclaimed to himself and then quickly changed lanes and picked up the pace. Ashley was driving her pink Mercedes-Benz, that was imported from London and had a custom paint job. She had seen Steve driving a few blocks back, and was now determined to hunt him down for an explanation about earlier.

Steve kept checking in his rear view mirror, she was getting closer and did not look happy. Steve dreaded the thought of facing an angry Ashley, it was one of the worst things to experience, and he avoided it when he could. Ashley had now caught up to Steve and was driving right alongside him in the other lane. She had her window rolled down and was screaming something at him.

“Steveeee….. STEVVE…. Stop!!!” Ashley was screaming, and not exactly concentrating on the road, cars were swerving to avoid her and honks could be heard fading into the distance. Steve was panicking, he hadn’t seen her this mad since he decided to stay home and watch football instead of going to the spring fling! Suddenly Steve saw an opportunity and took it, he furiously made a right hand turn at the intersection catching Ashley off guard.

“Noooooo!” Ashley screamed as her car went careening out of control and hit a fire hydrant. This caused the car to start spinning wildly, and then the car crashed right into a fresh fruit stand, and came to a halt.
Steve couldn’t help but laugh, he had escaped her, for now, but she might come back again. Steve found an alley and parked his car in it, out of sight from the main road. Steve then found the nearest shop and quickly went inside.

It was Ernie’s Pawn Shop, and Steve stood inside, half hidden behind an antique dresser, looking out the window. He could see Ashley emerging from her car, covered from head to toe in a various assortment of fresh fruits. She was jumping up and down and wailing her fists around wildly, throwing a temper tantrum no doubt. The owner of the fresh fruit stand was screaming at her, and she was screaming back, and then a police car stopped, and the cop got out and entered the tussle. Steve was laughing, as the scene was quite comical, and then he turned away, certain that he was safe for the time being.

He decided that since he was here he might take a look around and see what there was in this shop. He Hadn’t been in here since he was a kid, he used to come in with his dad, looking for vintage sports goods, and rare baseball cards. Steve was reflecting on the good old days, when something caught his eye. “Excuse me, Ernie? When did that watch come in?” Steve asked Ernie, who emerged from behind a pile of clutter. “Meh, just last week, some punk dropped it by, why you interested?” Ernie gauged Steve for a reaction, always anxious to make a sale.

“Actually, yes I’ll take it please!” Steve declared, he knew exactly who’s watch that was, and knew just how important it was to that certain someone. Ernie packaged up the watch for Steve, and Steve paid him the cash, and then Steve went to leave the store, checking to see that Ashley was gone first. He made his way to the car, and then took off down the road, he could see a huge stain of fruit juice on the road behind him. Steve would give the watch back to Jake, that would show him how much he cared.

Jake awoke in a strange bed, he was in a white room that smelled funny and there was only one tiny window really high up. Jake stumbled to his feet, wondering what had happened, and then remembered everything, He searched the room for a door, but there didn’t appear to be one in sight. “Heeeelllppp! Help me!” Jake shouted, hoping someone would hear him, but his breath was wasted, no one could hear him. He was however, being monitored, though he didn’t know this at the moment.

Jake reached into his pocked, and to his amazement found that his cell phone was still there, he couldn’t believe that they hadn’t taken it. He opened it up and crossed his fingers, and to his amazement, the cell phone had service as well. This could be his only chance to get out of here, Jake dialed the first number that automatically popped into his head, Adam.

Adam was sitting on the couch watching TV when suddenly, his cell phone rang. Adam reached into his pocket and then pulled it out, looking at the caller ID. “Jake Saddler” the screen read, and Adam looked at the picture contemplating whether he was ready to talk to Jake yet or not. Adam closed his eyes for a moment, and then decided that this wasn’t the time, and with that he put his cell phone back in his pocket.

“C’mon Adam, pick up! Please, pick up!” Jake was desperate, Adam always answered his phone, what was going on? “Hi you’ve reached Adam, you know what to do!” it was the voice mail, “Adam you’ve got to help me my mom had me admitted, she’s gone crazy, come get me I’m at…”. Suddenly the phone beeped and Jake looked at the screen, “Low Battery” the screen read, and then proceeded to shut down. “No! Damnit all!” Jake screamed furiously, that was it, he was trapped in here now, until he was “cured”. Jake just kept pounding on the wall, desperate to find a way out of this new prison he was in.

It gets an "A" for story.
It gets a "B+" for grammar because you make quite a few mistakes that are common over and over, but it's okay.
Yet again. I would focus on sentence structure and figuring out what pronouns go to what, as it would help clarify the story a bit ore.

That is quite the story. This is drama and it is keeping me on the edge. This has become a cliff hanger. Please keep writing because I can't wait for the next episode...|
