"The Next Iron Chef" airs Sundays on the Food Network @ 9pm EST......

This is going to be an interesting Battle of the Best Celeb Chefs. My money is on "tough as nails competitior" Anne Burrell. Anne takes no prisoners. The ultimate "Wild-Card" and "Silent slayer" Marcus Samuelsson is the ONLY Food Network Celeb Chef holding the Winning title as one of "BRAVO's Top Chef Masters"...Marcus is a Force to be reckoned with...

Established chefs risk reputations to be 'The Next Iron Chef'

By Rene Lynch, Los Angeles Times
October 29, 2011

They're the food world's equivalent of "made" men and women — instantly recognizable chefs who have their own cooking shows, cookbooks, brands and fan following. Names like Napa Valley's Michael Chiarello. New York City's Marcus Samuelsson and Alex Guarnaschelli.

So why they are willing to put it all on the line to compete in Season 4 of "The Next Iron Chef," which debuts Sunday on Food Network? It's a question that confounds even the host, Alton Brown.

"These chefs have more to lose than they actually have to gain," Brown said Friday during a telephone interview.

The first three seasons featured many lesser-known chefs who used it as a breakout platform and "won" just by appearing on the show — no matter how long they stuck around, Brown said. "But these folks," he said of Season 4's lineup, "have got reputations in the eye of the media already. Falling is going to hurt. It's a long way down."

This battle of the "super chefs" determines who will become the newest member of the Food Network's hallowed pantheon of Iron Chefs. The winner stands alongside the likes of Masahara Morimoto and Bobby Flay and takes on challengers in secret-ingredient showdowns on "Iron Chef America," also hosted by Brown.

This season features a sudden-death twist. Competitors once again will face a weekly challenge issued by the nimble Chairman. But instead of leaving the elimination up to the panel of judges, the two chefs who are the least successful will face off against each other. The loser goes home.

The result is that there's no protection from the herd, as viewers will see in this Sunday's nail-biting cook-off featuring a most unlikely duo. (Food Network made the episode available for media viewing.)

But the siren call of the Iron Chef, with the fame and potential fortune that brings, is hard to resist, said Guarnaschelli. "There's a child-like, Disneyland feeling that runs up every chef's spine" at the thought of becoming an Iron Chef, she said.

A cookbook author and Food Network star of "Alex's Day Off" as well as a regular judge on the channel's "Chopped," she said she couldn't let a fear of failure stand in her way. "It was kind of cool to be asked to the party. It's a small party to be invited to," she said.

Also invited to the soiree along with Chiarello, Samuelsson and Guarnaschelli are Anne Burrell, Elizabeth Falkner, Chuck Hughes, Robert Irvine, Beau MacMillan, Spike Mendelsohn and Geoffrey Zakarian.

Much anticipated is the prospect of a showdown between Burrell and Irvine, who have famously duked it out on "Chopped" and "Worst Cooks in America" with Burrell reigning supreme — and then rubbing Irvine's face in it. It was hard at the time to watch, perhaps because audiences are so unaccustomed to watching a woman making no apologies for her desire to win and showing little regard for anyone who gets in her way.

"There's no 'soft, throw-pillow side' to her personality," Brown said. "She is not apologetic, she is in your face, she is fierce." And anyone who holds that against her, he said, simply doesn't understand the cutthroat, sexist environment of top-rung kitchens, where Burrell had to fight to survive.

Brown said the pressure among the chefs was "diamond-crushing" and largely self-imposed.

"I would say that 90% of the time they are going out by beating themselves," he said, such as taking a cushion of time to prepare a bonus dish that the judges ended up hating instead of perfecting the dish they already planned. But that's what great chefs do, he said. "There's an envelope of safety. And the more you reach for something outside your comfort zone … there be dragons there."

want Anne to win---she's cool--goes to my gym is friendly and works out hard but her body never seems to change --lol---plus--she is a gifted chef with a great personality.

In the end, I think it's going to come down to Anne and Geoffrey. I like Anne's personality better, but I feel that Geoffrey is going to go all the way.

1st episode was a good one....I did not expect Geoeffry to Blow everybody out of the water...I don't think he's ever had his own special other than hosting....Good-Looking and serious Dude...

Marcus is a Gambler and that is what will take him to and possibly beyond the finish line...

I love all of Food Network's reality competitions. I live for Next Food Network Star and Worst Cooks in America. This show is a total orgasm for a Food Network fan, though. I really think Anne will win, but I'm rooting for Alex. I definitely think the network is hoping for (i.e. is pushing for) a woman to win since Cat Cora left Iron Chef America and there are only men left.

My BF and I are rooting for 2 of them at this point: Anne Burell and Robert Irvine. We were worried in the first episode cuz they had bad blood, but then they got paired, worked well, and survived :) made us happy lol.

Also rooting for the Canadian cuz.. well, Canucks rule.

Cat is GONE? This is NEWS I havent heard....

Can't stand Chiarello. He was such a dick on Top Chef Masters.

But have you followed Michael's years of hosting shows on TFN? I've watched him on TFN since the 90's and like many of his fellow Chefs on the Network I feel as if I know him. Micheal is easy on the Eye and seems to be down to earth.. You do realize that EVERYTHING changes when you're competing against Chefs that are your equals &/or better @ cooking?

Every Chef is in a different mode when they don't have to "prove" their cooking skills...

I'm not sure when she left because I don't really watch Iron Chef all that often, but none of the recent episodes have had her in the lineup at the beginning. The only ones left are Flay, Morimoto, Symon, Garces, and Forgione.

Yea he was nice on his scripted shows. But every time I have seen him on a reality show or anything unscripted he comes across as a rude, self-centered dick. He was especially disrespectful in a particular challenge whre they had to partner with Top Chef Alum and when he dealt with judges. And there's no excuse for that. EVERYONE was competing but he was the only one who chose to act like a dick.

Was Michael on "Top Chef: Masters" with Marcus? I caught the last 2 episodes of that season...What I thought was so ironic is the other 2 Chefs canceled Marcus out of the equation and ASSUMED the battle would be between the 2 of them...Marcus beat them BOTH in the end...LOL...Too good...

I remember the face of one of the Top Chefs but I don't recall the other Chef...Maybe it wasnt Michael...

Gotta Love Robert Irvine but not surprised he went home this week...I think Michael would have Bitched-a-fit had he lost..Aijalon might be right about dude...LOL....

Yeah, Chiarello is such a prissy queen. Dude served a reheated sausage with a raw egg white on top (which is like snot. ICK), then whined like a bitch when he got called out on it. If you can't handle having your food judged or its flaws pointed out, then you shouldn't be on Iron Chef - PERIOD.

I've seen Chefs do that raw Egg thing on different shows...For some reason the Judges wasnt feeling those yolks..Mikey thought he kicked-ass with that Dish...LOL...You could see his Eyes turn COLD on that ballpark field...he wanted to punch Elton Brown right in the middle of his Glasses...LOL..

I thought the Cute & Conservative Geoffrey Zakarian was gonna be in the bottom 2...he MISSED the entire Freaking concept of the Challenge...But he made some Kick-Ass Food and that saved him...I have a serious Man-Crush on that Dude...He's just so "neat & proper" and I see him throwing his legs up in the bedroom....Every Damn time I see him on "Chopped" I just wanna Fuck him...I can't explain it...

And you see how they called-out Marcus for making a boat-load of dishes in such a short amount of time?...His can create the most Food dishes in the shortest amount of time and it tastes out-of-this-World...They got on him @ the Park and @ the judges table threatening him if he "shows off' again...

Marcus is the "Master" he's only doing what comes natural...
