Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

False. Mariah Carey, actually, is.

According to the RIAA, Mariah Carey is the leading female artist in the United States with 134 certifications (Gold, Platinum & Diamond) based on a combination of sales from singles, albums and videos.

The female artist Top 10 is made up as follows:

1. Mariah Carey - 134 Certifications
2. Barbra Streisand- 133 Certifications
3. Madonna- 130 Certifications
4. Whitney Houston- 94 Certifications
5. Janet Jackson- 74 Certifications
6. Celine Dion- 72 Certifications
7. Shania Twain- 67 Certifications
8. Britney Spears- 63 Certifications
9. Beyonce- 41 Certifications
10. Christina Aguilera- 40 Certifications

And according to SonyMusic.com, also on award shows ;)

And again, according to Simon Cowell, Mariah is.

"Whitney is the most covered artist on the TV Show American Idol with over 1,150 of 70,000 auditions being songs of hers during the show's third season. The song "I Have Nothing" has been performed in the finals 6 times, more than any other song."

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Whitney is the only artist with at least one Grammy, Emmy, MTV Video Music Award, MTV Movie Award, People's Choice Award, and Billboard Music Award to their name.

Whitney has won 23 American Music Awards, more than any other artist or act.

Whitney won a record of eight American Music Awards for The Bodyguard back in 1994. She is tied only with Michael Jackson, who won eight AMA's for Thriller at the 1984 ceremony.

Whitney won a record eleven Billboard Music Awards at the 1993 ceremony for The Bodyguard.

Whitney won a record five World Music Awards at the ceremony in 1994, equalled only by Michael Jackson at the 1996 ceremony.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Whitney is the first and only female artist to concurrently top the US, UK, and Australian charts with a single song ("I Will Always Love You").

Whitney has the longest concurrent topping of the US, UK, and Australian charts when "I Will Always Love You" spent 9 weeks simultaneously topping the charts.

Whitney is the only artist to have one song in the UK Year-End Singles Chart for two consecutive years. "I Will Always Love You" ranked #1 in 1992, and #9 in 1993.

"I Will Always Love You" was named the Top Australian Single of the 1990s by a female artist.

"I Will Always Love You" is the only single to have a double-digit run at the top of the U.S., UK, and Australian charts.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

In 1994, Whitney received an award from the World Music Awards, for being the "best-selling artist of the era". To date she has sold over 170 million records worldwide.[1]

At the end of 1999, Whitney was named the top-selling R&B female artist of the century.[2]

The Bodyguard was the first pop album in Korea to sell one million copies.

The world's biggest selling soundtrack is The Bodyguard with over 42 million units sold[3].

The world's best selling debut album by a female is Whitney Houston, with over twenty-five million copies sold. The album also ranks as the best selling female album of the 1980s.

Whitney was the first female artist to have two diamond albums (as of January 1994, both Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard were over ten times platinum). To date, Whitney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Shania Twain, and The Dixie Chicks are the only female artists with multiple diamond albums.

"I Will Always Love You" is the best-selling single by a female artist, and the biggest-selling non-charity single of all time, with world sales of ten million copies.
The Bodyguard was the world's largest selling soundtrack of the 1990s with over thirty-three million copies sold from 1992 to 1999.

The largest initial certification of any album by the RIAA was for The Bodyguard, whose first certification was for sales of over six million copies.

Whitney is one of only two female artists (the other being Mariah Carey) to have three albums sell over nine million copies each in the U.S.: Whitney Houston, Whitney, and The Bodyguard.

In the 1990s, Whitney was the best-selling soundtrack artist in the U.S., with her three soundtracks selling over twenty-seven million copies in the United States throughout the decade.

The Preacher's Wife soundtrack is the best-selling Gospel album of all time, with sales of over three million copies in the U.S. and six million copies worldwide.

Whitney's version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is the only version to be certified platinum.

Whitney holds the record for highest one week single sales by a female artist as 632,000 copies of "I Will Always Love You" were sold in the final week of December 1992.

The Bodyguard is the best-selling album by a foreign female artist in Brazil.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Why are you bothering to list past accomplishments? That doesn't really do anything to help her now. Last time I heard her sing live on some awards show, she was terrible. She ruined herself, and that's that. She's tried to come back with a single THREE times now, and failed each time. She's done.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

I agree with marley -- it isn't so much of a 'comeback' as a PR boost. But good for her, her voice is phenomenal.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

And the trainwreck continues. This woman has won Grammys and plaques on her wall, but now she's reduced to being the most covered artist on a non-talent show. Wow, I'm impressed. My, how times have changed....and expectations have hit an all-time low.

"Reduced"? Nothing's being reduced, it's just simply ANOTHER record added to her never-ending list of accomplishments. Whatchutalkinbout "reduced"? Hah!

It doesn't matter if they're from the past. They're STILL relevant today. Her records STILL haven't been broken. They never will be with the way albums are selling these days with the presence of the internet and downloading.

So while yall bitter queens are on here hating, Whitney is still a highly respected artist in the industry and still gets standing ovations where ever she goes, former "crackhead" or not. She's a living legend, love her or hate her.;)

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Unless, like a grown man should, I don't HAVE a "favorite celebrity." Fandom like that is for kids. When you have a bedroom covered with posters advertising your "favorite celebrity" and you're over 20, you need to grow up. You really need to grow up.

Enjoy artists for what they do, not who they are. I have my favorite bands, yes, but I don't know anything about them personally at all. Just that I like the music. (although the lead singer of my favorite band doesn't drink or do drugs... I only know that because I know him in real life and he talks about it privately.)

If one is a fan of Whitney's music... one wouldn't be proclaiming her "come back" just for walking out on stage and not being stoned at that exact moment. She's only "come back" when she releases a new album and it's good. Until then, she's just a has been whose personal life out-shone her actual work.

Tell that to people who have Marley and Morrison posters on their walls! They will gladly escort you from their smoke out. lol

If you care to do some research, several records have CLEARLY been broken ;)

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

MCsNo1CUNT --

You don't even want me to go grab and post Whitney's FULL list of awards, accomplishments, records sold, records broken, ect. Whitney's been on the scene since 1985, so she has 5 extra years on Mariah who debuted in 1990. Whitney's been around a little longer and was selling and breaking records BEFORE Mariah Carey came on. Whitney Houston paved the way for Mariah Carey. Whitney Houston was the first female artist to really start to accomplish all that she did. Mariah just came along and followed suit. No other female was selling and breaking records like Whitney was before she came along. Whitney started that shyt. And everyone in the industry KNOWS this. That's why she's so respected.

Whitney Houston SETS the standard. ;)

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

If you care to do some research, several records have CLEARLY been broken ;)

And? The whole point was Whitney SET the record first. That's all the more impressive than someone coming along and breaking it second. ;)

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

MCsNo1CUNT --

LMAO. Mature!

Whitney's been on the scene since 1985, so she has 5 extra years on Mariah who debuted in 1990.

I can guarantee most of the records Whitney set first, were records that were already achieved by others.

And even with those 5 years, Mariah has STILL outsold Whitney and broken several records that Whitney once had, and ones she'll never have. So, yeah, I'm mature enough not to take this on a 1st grade teenybopper level, so if you want to continue to do so, so be it, but I've said my fact-based piece.

And Mariah never needed a reality show to stay afloat ;) Crackey Houston did!

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Finally, for both Brittany Spears and Whitney Houston, I think its really bold to claim that they had children who they did not "love or care for" .

Bold but sadly very true. Rumor has it that Brit-Brit was speeding down the backroads of Louisiana slinging back a jug of Lynne's homemade wine hell-bent on getting a cheap abortion when Ann Coulter stopped her. Ann actually paid Brit-Brit to have the baby! This was not easy and Ann had to make sweet delicious old-fashioned lesbian love to Brit-Brit before she would agree.

Re: Whitney Houston's Comeback Appearance '09

Oh, and BTW, I encourage you to post Whitney's awards and accomplishments. I've seen them. Mariah's list is vastly larger.

Lies. Clive Davis, Quincy Jones (among other industry big dogs), and Guinness Book of World Records even says so. ;)
