'The Voice' review: Shakira charms, Usher rocks a healthy ego

In hopes to gin up excitement for new coaches Usher and Shakira, NBC screened the first two hours of*The Voice*today for journalists before the fourth season premieres on March 25. As expected, the show was quick to trumpet the talents of his newest additions– they’re multiple Grammy winners and*international icons, y’all!*– but the real test came when they had to sit down next to veteran show stealers Blake Shelton (who’s as charismatic as ever) and Adam Levine (who’s as picky as ever).

Favorable editing aside, the newbies have (so far) lived up to the build-up. Usher displayed the right amount of confidence (“This is the show I wanted to be associated with because it has credibility,” he said, in a not-so subtle slight to*American Idol) but also showed an amusing amount of humility — especially when he’s called out for referring to Nashville as a “state.” (D’oh!) Shakira, meanwhile, is less like a diva and more of a delight — her precious accent making her all the more winsome, especially when she starts to talk trash by calling Levine’s season one win “beginner’s luck.” It can’t be easy to dodge playful barbs from Shelton and Levine — comic moments come easy for those two now — but in all, Usher and Shakira appear to have settled in quite nicely and are pretty slick at selling themselves as coaches. (Kudos to Usher for playing the Justin Bieber card when trying to lure a teen to his team). The*new*players*make good band mates, too: The premiere’s*opening musical*segment features Levine on drums, Shelton and Usher on guitars and Shakira on harmonica. Sounds odd, I know, but the combination rocked.

Naturally, every new contestant comes with a back story, like*a redemption-seeking alcoholic, a*gifted*Chinese teen*who was adopted by U.S. parents,*and a soulful man who lost*his twins at birth. If only*Executive Producer Mark Burnett would rely those*sad tales sparingly;*the*girl who was bullied for having crooked teeth in grade school seemed painfully out-of-place next to a dude whose dying mother may not live to see the finale in May.

But dang, could those two sing!

I can't stand this show, and I can't stand Adam Levine, but I will watch it solely for Usher. That dude gives me blue balls.

So glad X-tina is gone. It will take some time for me to warm up to her.

I never really cared about Adam but someone clearly is not knocking him down and keeping his ego in check. No wonder why his music sucks now.

I felt bad making a racist stereotype when watching with my roomie: "oh, black guy playing the bass". LOL about Nashville being a state and enough with Justin Bieber.

Not watching without the LEGENDARY Xtina.

Ha! Alright.....SAY!

Not even for this temptation?

Could bury my face in that crotch all day.

I watched last nite's episode and I hope they don't pander to the "Latin" crowd because of Shakira.

Not to worry, they most likely will. She is very cute and sweet though. I think motherhood has been good for her.

Kind of interesting how much better the Monday night episode was compared to the Tuesday one. Tuesday's was just downright boring. The only chuckle was Adam Levine proclaiming he is 6-foot. He is at most 5'10" and that's on a good day.

^lol @ Madam saying he is 6'. I used to like Adam a lot more before The Voice. He's a great looking dude but he's such a diva.
and he's so passive aggressive.

The amusing part is, his gay brother comes across more "straight" than Adam does.

I actually prefer Shakira and Usher over Xtina and Cee Lo. That said, I will probably lose all interest in this show once the blind auditions are over.

Judith and Karina! WOW...how the fuck could Adam choose...and why did he set himself up to do it?

I've been very underwhelmed this season so far. I hate the prerecorded crap because I know deep down, it is all producer driven [FYI Mark Brunett produces the show and he's a complete sod]. In the blinds, they railed on some guy for covering 'Teenage Dream' and then another guy covers the song in the knockout round and I'm just thinking, "is this a set up"? Hopefully the live rounds will be better.

Also, who knew that Blake would become the diva this season. He must be sober.

I am still trying to figure out why a song about a druggie became so popular aka 'The A-team'. I know the US as a collective suffers from White Knight Syndrome but .

Also, people should know by now in music competitions to not touch any of the legends a la Whitney, MJ, Celine and Freddie Mercury.

The Voice is so boring to me,tbh. I mean, yeah I wanna choke on both Usher and Adam's dicks, but that's not enough to keep me entertained. The judges and the contestants are so boring. At least Christina added a little spice and she wasn't afraid tob e perceived as a bitch. Shakira is sweet and all, but she's too sweet for TV.

Would not be shocked at all when Cee Lo and Christina come back and the ratings drop again. I could rant further but the purses will come flying my way.

Last night's elimination went exactly as expected. Garrett should have gone home a while ago and Vedo is eh, at best.

Seems others have noticed this too but Usher totally wants Josiah's cock it's not even funny. He will sneak by another round or two on looks and then get booted off for being a complete bore.

This season is basically down to Danielle Bradbury and Judith Hill. Amanda is pretty blonde with a decent voice but Shakira caught on that she truly is the "iron lady" and has no emotion in anything thing she things. I know that's a hard thing to do at 16 that only comes with life experiences [um, no Taylor Swift comment]. Judith forgot the words to "You've Got a Friend" and did a Christina thing and added some 'yeahs' and runs. The hypocrisy is not lost on me that Christina would scold her for doing something she is basically famous for.
