Chris Engen could only dream to ever become as famous as huge stars like Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Sean Penn, James Franco, Philip Seymour Hoffman, or Tom Hanks (just to name a few). Playing gay didn't ruin their careers, and arguably it actually boosted them. If he is lucky, Engen will be forever cast as trivial soap star acting in forgettable, stale stories.

I wonder how many people will protest. Both As the World Turns and Guiding Light has lost viewers because of their gay storylines. I love both along with B&B.

From a recent interview with headwriter Maria Arena Bell...

This is interesting, because Maria's late father-in-law, William J. Bell, was anecdotally known to be somewhat homophobic and blocked any portrayals of gay characters, even as rival soaps such as All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, Guiding Light, Loving, Passions, and As The World Turns began to start incorporating LGBT characters into their storylines, even though the overwhelming majority of writers and actors on Y&R were absolutely in favor of it.

This pretty much mirrors how Rick Berman pretty much vetoed any major gay storyline in the Star Trek franchise, until he was kicked out by Paramount. I expect we'll see a major gay character/storyline when Star Trek finally comes out with another television series.
