UC Davis pepper spray cop is anti-gay

Have you guys seen the video of the UC Davis police spraying pepper spray on UC Davis students sitting down in a peaceful protest?

The police officer spraying the pepper spray is Lt. John Pike.

It turns out that Lt. Pike earns over $100,000 a year and oversees many other police officers. He has received many awards and recognition for his past work performance. Prior to joining the UC Davis police department, he served many years as a US Marine.

He is also anti-gay.

But an alleged anti-gay slur by Pike also figured in a racial and sexual discrimination lawsuit a former police officer filed against the department, which ended in a $240,000 settlement in 2008. Officer Calvin Chang's 2003 discrimination complaint against the university's police chief and the UC Board of Regents alleged he was systematically marginalized as the result of anti-gay and racist attitudes on the force, and he specifically claimed Pike described him using a profane anti-gay epithet.

Does it really matter? Has he acted out on his supposed anti-gay beliefs?

Yes, he has acted out in his anti-gay beliefs, if he restricted Officer Calvin Chang's opportunities in the police department because Officer Chang was gay or suspected to be gay.

The fact that Officer Chang received a $240,000 settlement indicates that Lt. Pike likely inflicted some kind of harm on Officer Chang, or on Officer Chang's career because of Lt. Pike's dislike or hatred of gay men.

I'm pretty sure Lt. Pike is a Republican, because most police officers tend to lean more politically conservative, and also because that part of California (Davis/ Sacramento area) is reliably Republican.

i don't really care that he's anti-gay. I care about cops abusing their authority, which they all do.

Cops need to chill out with the effing pepper spray! Like that 84 year old women who got sprayed... really? you couldn't grab her by the arm and pull her aside? Then they release some dumb ass statement about how pepper spray is no more dangerous to an 84y/o or a 12 y/o -_-

No. I'm defending the idiot's right to privacy. He sprayed those college students, so he gave up his rights as a private citizen? He wasn't convicted of anything. He never had his day in court. Chang took loot over principle.

Officer Pikes has a facebook page, and he was extremely foul mouthed through his words to me on his page. He's anti-gay, and anti-OWS, ANTI-1st AMENDMENT!

What does the officers anti-gay stance have to do with him pepper spraying the protesters? It doesn't make sense to bring that up.

It paints a picture of a man who sprayed people in the face not because he was in any danger, but because he's a prick.

His private life? What the hell? Allegations made against him about a slur used ON THE JOB don't have to do with his private life. He was accused of being a racist homophobe by a colleague. He's a public servant, and apparently it allegedly happened while he was in his role as one.

As far as institutions caving and settling, most don't do so if they know they can win. For them to pay such a large amount most likely means there was some merit to the officer's claims, and they wanted the situation to go away.
