What would your ultimate luxury be?

Probably what wasn't luxury at all a century ago, household servants.

Cooks, maids, gardeners, wet nurses, and a few others were common in the first half of the 20th century for middle classed Americans. People who were not rich in any way, only employed and professionals, were able to employ people, some full time, some not.

Today, only the upper middle class and upper class can usually do that.

I wish I could just have my ironing and house cleaning done. My neighbor is recently retired Boeing engineer. He and his wife hire a lawn service. It seems like she was worried about him on a mower, but it seems extravagant. Their lot is only an acre and no weed trimming is really needed.

Isn't luxury more than money?

A terminally ill man may wish to have the luxury of having years to put his affairs in order, or to be able to be cured. And no amount of money can provide him either if he has a late stage incurable cancer.

A successful career woman may love her job and success, but has not enough time to do that and be the perfect mother or wife she believes she can be.

A cat lover may love the fur of kittens, but live in a society where it is unacceptable to have a blanket made from their fur.

I know this isn’t a joking matter, but I also know you’d laugh at this so I’m going to throw it out there. Hopefully it makes you smile.

I hope you find something that helps. I have a very good girl friend that suffers from bipolar disorder. She’s the sweetest person in the world when she’s up, and the meanest person when she’s down.


I agree with ticktock, I’d love the ability to travel where and when I want. Spend a month in the south of France? Spend the week in Norway watching the Northern lights? That would be great.

When I staged houses in Albuquerque in 2010-11, I provided my furniture and was able to live in a couple of great houses for only about $400 per month plus utilities in exhange for always leaving the house staged and presentable for viewing.

One house I stayed in for about a year was four bedrooms, a courtyard, and a huge master suite. It was adobe and had tile floors, and a bunch of nice features.

In the back was a detached natatorium. I never got to enjoy it, as they had no equipment to vacuum the bottom, and it had powder residue down there from adding shock or soda, and I didn't want to be in that. But, what I discovered is that I didn't like that indoor trapped chlorine smell. It's kind of nauseating.

I don't know if it's better when the pool is saline or not.

A clean pool shouldn’t smell like chlorine. If it smells like chlorine, add more chlorine, there’s still bacteria and ammonia in the pool.

That’s a tough question. As a one-off experience, I’d say a full day at a top notch spa, full treatment schedule, with really good staff! Soaked, scrubbed and massaged into putty then tucked in for a really good sleep. Wake up refreshed and ready to head out to a different kind of bath

Travel? Can't think of where to go.
I'd like to see the Pyramids with my eyes but I suspect I'd be disappointed for the tourist trap stuff.

Have someone come to clean and dust and vacuum the house every few weeks.
Have someone do the yard a few times a year. Mowing, tree trimming, all that stuff.
Hey, it's cold, turn up the heat and not think about the electric bill.
Maybe get a swimming pool and have a maintenance plan taking care of the chems.

But ya know what? I'm cool right here with my dogs and cats and chickens and an emu.
