There seems to be a bit of controversy brewing over director David O. Russell's choice of Mark Wahlberg to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming 'Uncharted' movie...

Uncharted Movie Lures Back David O. Russell as Director

Victorian-era zombies are out and exotic fortune hunting is back in for director David O. Russell, as Sony has announced they've signed Russel to helm their Uncharted film adaptation after all.

Russell, you may recall, was originally in negotiations to direct the project, but decided not to commit so he could direct an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies instead. But when Natalie Portman, who was intended to star in that adaptation, had to drop out due to scheduling reasons, Russell quit the project as well, apparently allowing him to return to Uncharted.

Mark Wahlberg Confirms Starring Role in 'Uncharted' Movie

News has slowly been surfacing about the forthcoming "Uncharted" movie, based on the hit PS3 franchise. The last confirmed information that we received was that David O. Russell, the director of movies like "Three Kings" and this year's "The Fighter," would be helming the project. The biggest question, however, has remained strictly in the realm of speculation: Who would be playing the hero, Nathan Drake?

Not long after Wahlberg's interview, Movie critic/comedian/YouTube personality Jeremy Jahns sounded off:

Following a screening of The Fighter, Russel was approached by an avid fan of the games:

If you follow the video to YouTube, there is a link to a video he posted explaining the situation. Personally, I think the guy comes off as a total... well, watch it if you want. I won't bother again.

Could Nathan Fillion Replace Mark Wahlberg in ‘Uncharted’?

It’s not an exaggeration to say that fans of the PlayStation 3 video game franchise Uncharted have continued to express their concern for director David O. Russell’s re-imagined take on their beloved treasure hunter, Nathan Drake.

Back in November, Mark Wahlberg confirmed that he would be stepping into Drake’s shoes but, considering the Uncharted film is barely a gleam in Russell’s eye at this point, is it possible that we could see a different actor step into the role? Maybe even fan-favorite Nathan Fillion?

Personally, I'm a way bigger fan of Drake than I am either of these actors. If I had to choose between them, I would go for Nathan Fillon. Honestly though, I'm not even sure I want to see this movie made. I have yet to see anything about Naughty Dog being involved in the project, although there has been some activity on their forums about the topic.

For anyone who doesn't know about Nathan Drake, and is interested:

Who would you rather see cast as Drake?

Wahlberg is too old (Sorry Marky). He is pushing 40. Never while playing Uncharted did it seem as if Nathan was this old. I'm thinking Chris Pine is the perfect age and has the cocky charm which the Nathan character has.

Dave Annable or Josh Duhamel? Josh because well... he sorta favors Johnny Knoxville, and that's who Drake was original modeled after. And since Johnny isn't exactly an actor (or is he?) so there's always Josh, whose characters usually have a goofy, sarcastic wit about them.

I started to pick not to make it a movie at all; there's very few successful videogame to film adaptions. Doomsday...Resident Evil (though I actually liked the second and fourth), Tomb Raider (not Angelina's fault >_> ). And I haven't saw either of the Trons yet.

I just don't want Hollywood to fuck up a good game, y'know?

^^ Ohh, never thought of James Lafferty. He especially looks like Drake in that last pic with facial hair. Good eye, PandyBoxx.

Nathan Fillion, hands down. He might not look him in full, and is a little older, he has the snark to match the character. An actor may look like him, but a lot that were listed in this topic I cannot see pulling off the snarky wit that Drake has.

It is pretty clear that there is some dissension between the movie's director David O. Russell and the director of the Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Justin Richmond...

‘Uncharted’ “Family Dynamic” Storyline Debunked? Mark Wahlberg Not Signed Yet

Fans have not been happy with the plot details and casting David O. Russell‘s big screen adaptation of the popular video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Not only did Russell seem like an odd choice as a director (the closest thing to an action movie he’s directed is Three Kings), but Mark Wahlberg seemed like an odd choice to play the lead character Nathan Drake (fans have been campaigning for Nathan Fillion for years now, and fans have even confronted O Russell in person about the casting announcement). And then comes the rumors that the director is interested in having Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci play the father and uncle of Drake, and a choice quote in the LA Times from the filmmaker (who was half way through writing a draft of the script):
This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities … [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice… We’ll have the family dynamic, which we’ve done in a couple of movies now… And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That’s a really cool idea to me.
So in other words, O. Russell’s plans seem to stray far from the source material. As you can imagine, fans of the game series were not happy. Well, the director of the latest Uncharted 3 video game says otherwise… but what does he know?

Your Uncharted Movie Nightmares Might Not Happen

The Uncharted movie sure sounds rotten. David O. Russell directing Mark Wahlberg and a family of archaeologists? Stupid! Good thing the game's developer is saying the Hollywood actor's claims just aren't true. Well, sorta.

"First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell," Uncharted 3 director Justin Richmond tells Joystiq. "He actually called us up and was like, 'I don't know what these guys are talking about.'"

I read that Mark Wahlberg and Nathan Fillon are both 41. I think Chris Pine is a much better choice to play Drake than Wahlberg.

Josh Duhamel! ..| ..| ..|

I feel ya. I'm starting to have nightmares of focus groups of movie-goers determining future development of the game.

How about James Lafferty?

Besides (I think) he looks way more like Nathan Drake than any of those guys
I agree with starkiller. He does look like Drake in that photo. Admittedly, I'm not very familiar with Lafferty. I have seen him on One Tree Hill a few times, but that's about it. Do you think he has the acting chops to capture Drake's personality?

Nathan Fillion, hands down. He might not look him in full, and is a little older, he has the snark to match the character. An actor may look like him, but a lot that were listed in this topic I cannot see pulling off the snarky wit that Drake has.
I caught Serenity the other night on SyFy. It was the first time I have seen it, and I have to admit, I was impressed enough to order the complete Firefly series dvds.

Alright, the movies got a new director and is being re-written from absolute scratch (this is probably old news, but whatever), so I'm hoping the movie actually takes off this time.

Also, got a new suggestion; what about Karl Urban for Drake?

I hadn't even heard of this. Officially excited! I just hope they replace Wahlberg (I mean, really?) with either Nathan Fillion (who I love from Castle) or Joe Flanigan.

Joe Flanigan would have been the perfect first choice IF he was 20-25 years younger. He completely fits the part, especially considering his role on Stargate: Atlantis, but he's just too old. Joe is barely 50 and Drake looks late twenties early thirties at best. HUGE age difference.

Nathan Fillion could probably pull it off, but I doubt they'd cast him. Probably not young enough as well. Chris Pine sounds more realistic, all he needs is a little bulk and stubble and he could be perfect. Mark Wahlberg, is most definitely a FAIL#-o.

Drake is in his mid-thirties in Uncharted 3. I don't know about the first one, because I never played it, but in Uncharted 3 there is a part that takes place when Drake is a teenager. At the beginning of this part it displays a subtitle that says something like "20 years ago" (or maybe 22). Either way he is at least in his mid-thirties in that game, so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

Then again, I don't know when the movie is supposed to take place. Is it based on one of the games in particular or is it just based on the series as a whole? And if it's the latter, where is it supposed to fit in chronologically?

i think the uncharted movie is really far away as of right now. they can't seem to get an accurate script down.

i have a feeling that with the game translated to the big screen, it will feel like an Indiana Jones re boot, with Nathan Drake. I Just don't have much faith in hollywood video game adaptations.
