The seeds for the US Open:

And the draws:

If no upsets occur (hah!) the semi-final for the "bottom half" of the men's singles will be Nadal v. Baghdatis

WOOF!!!!

Neither Nadal nor Baghdatis will make the semis at the Open. Baghdatis has Hewitt, Roddick and Ljubicic in his quarter. And... just to correct you, if no upsets occur the semi in the bottom half would be Nadal vs Ljubicic (#2 vs #3). There's no one seriously dangerous in Nadal's quarter but Mark Philippouissis won't be an easy first rounder no matter his ranking.

In the women's top half I'm very surprised to see Mauresmo paired with Sharpova for a semifinal showdown... even though I doubt either will make it. But having Petrova (even though she's lost 5 straight matches since May), Myskina (who's having a very strong second half to the season), Hingis (made the Montreal final and should have won) as well as Serena Williams as a potential (if not very unlikely) threat to the top seeds. There are a few other big hitting middle seeds in the top half. The bottom half seems to have a lot less power. Henin-Hardenne has a good chance in the bottom quarter to make the semis considering her strongest competition would be Lindsay Davenport whose back problems will probably get her in the end. We'll have to see how LD does at the Pilot Pen in New Haven this week, especially playing Mauresmo tomorrow night.

I feel sorry for the Scud - he has drawn Rafael Nadal in the first round. It will hardly worth his while even turning up!

We are in for an interesting couple of weeks, I think. At this level, a player can be on form one day and just a little bit off on the next so I wouldn't make any predictions yet. There's such a small difference between the ball catching the line and being out!

Just enjoy:=D: :=D: !

The ball catching the line, in my opinion, has very little to do with whether or not you're playing well enough to win. BUT a bad line call can disrupt your game, no doubt. It all depends on how a player is feeling, the style of play of their opponent and whether or not they are able to execute their game plan.

Don't know if anybody caught the Agassi/pavel match... but it was great... at least the first three sets were. Three tie breakers!! And in the third set pavel was up 4-0 and lost it. Will miss andre when he's gone for sure. His mental toughness and focus has always amazed me.

Rainy days and Tuesdays always get me down!

Tennis is a great sport to watch - go every year to the Open. The level of athleticism is high and unlike in team sports (which I love too), these guys are out there all alone with no where to hide - no substitutes - gotta get it done.

At the Open in the early rounds you're up close and personal - and the bodies on these guys are unbelievable. The legs, the abs - tennis players are fit period. You can't play 5 sets unless you're ripped. We always hear about Roddick (very sexy despite being boorish), Nadal (you should have seen him 3 years ago - a stringbean no joke) and the stars. But there are so many guys on the tour that are just eye candy, and then they start sweating and rearranging their shirts and you know . . . .

As for Agassi, mid 30's in tennis you might has well be in your 60's. Can't believe he's still going. I fear he will go down to Baghdatis but perhaps he gets into his head . . . . . . . But he will have to play a lot better than he did against Pavel. He will be missed for sure

That's true. Still it is the mental that makes the physical action possible. It strikes me, for example, with players like Hewitt and Roddick, if the serve is on (accurate) the match is a walkover. If it is off (inaccuarate), they are toast. The game plan often seems not much more than this.

I like the smaller tournaments where you are up close and personal all the time. It is very agreeable to park oneself in a good seat for a week, walk round the practice courts in the breaks and generally enjoy the scene that you describe. It makes for a relaxing time away from the grind.

By the way, chance1, I cannot help but think that if Roddick does do well in the USO, as he shows every sign of doing for various reasons, hubris is going to set in in a big way and we are going to see lots of high drama on and off the courts in coming months.

Yes indeed. It was comparable to the Agassi/Blake match last year that we saw on TV last night because of the rain in NYC. That was another cliff-hanger. Andre can really pull out all the stops sometimes. Sad we won't be seeing much more of it.

The Scud came and went....Rafael prevailed! I suppose the Scud did get a first round loser's fee.

This thread isn't getting anywhere near the attention the Wimbly & French Open threads did.

I wonder why?????

Could be the stop/start due to the weather? Nothing major has really happened save for Agassi 1st rounder - and while it was an ok match, not really big big news as Pavel "was not worthy". Now if he beats Baghdatis . . . . .

Lubjicic going down is no biggie - people forget that he called out Roddick (rightfully so IMO) couple years ago

It'll heat up HazeMaster - not to worry

who is everyone hoping will win women's singles? i'm kind of hoping that it will be dementieva...

I don't really care ......except if it is someone with a bloody annoying grunt/scream/yell I won't be watching.

I really hope it's Davenport or Hingis. My money would be on Henin though. Although Davenport just had a 6-0 6-0 win. If she can stay healthy, then she can really do this. Hingis; however, will probably make it to the quaters, hopefully the semis, but I doubt she goes any further than that.

As for the guys, it looks like it's going to be another peice of metal for Roger. Nadal is winning, but he's just not looking as energetic out there. It could be because he doesn't need to, but still. It looks like somethings missing. I hope Hewitt does good, but as his coach said, "If this wasn't the US Open, then we'd be at home." I forget what it is, but he's not 100% and it's showing. Roddick should make a pretty good run though. Hopefully!

Agassi is simply AMAZING! The Bagdhatis vs Agassi match more than lived up to its billing. It had everything you wanted in a match with precision ground strokes, multiple heroics from both players, grit, and the passion for the sport.

That match cemented how good Agassi is as a 36 year old versus a 21 year old Bagdhatis. I'm sure Bagdhatis picked up a ton of fans for his classy remarks for Agassi in the end. What a great guy and he never gave up even when the crowd was against him and he was having terrible cramps.

I hope Agassi doesn't feel the aches he might feel tomorrow. God knows he could use some R&R before his next match.

gaah im pissed i missed the end. or what i thought was the end. when i left it was the 3rd set 3rd game. and then i hear Bagdhatis caught up 3rd and 4th set. ahhh what a wonderful match i must have missed. i went to work with a smirk on my face thinking there's no way; agassi was mentally agressive and Bagdhatis just had too many unforced errors.

I don't want to be selfish, but I really want to see Agassi play one more match. I'm hoping the US Open will be rain delayed for his time slot in the US Open so Agassi can recover from his previous match with Baghdatis rather than withdrawing the tournament because of injury or showing up really injured. I don't want to see his career end that way considering this is his final tournament.

He just received his 2nd cortisone shot that day and prolonged cortisone shots may lead to weakened tendons and ligaments. With his 36 year old body being pushed to its limits, I wonder how well he can cope with just a days rest or even two days rest. His father, by admission, has said he wants his son to quit now rather than risking injury to himself rather than showing up and pleasing the fans.

I'm all for his health and recuperation, but if the rain delay would help him recuperate and give him an extra days rest, I'm all for it. If he does decide to quit at this juncture, he ended his career in a very spectacular fashion and a class act as well. :gogirl:

Quarter-Finals I love to see.....:gogirl:
Federer vs Tursunov
Safin vs Murray
Roddick vs Djokovic
Youzhny vs Nadal

Please let there be a 4th round match-up between Roddick and Agassi. Would love for the 2 of them to meet in the final but unfortunately the 4th round is where it would happen. Love them both and don't know who I'd find myself pulling for. On the one hand, I would like Roddick to win and it could be like Andre passing the baton to the younger American. On the other hand, I would love for Andre to go all the way and retire in a blaze of glory (highly unlikely). But what a story book ending that would be if Andre kicked Federer's ass in the final. Can you imagine the New York crowd's reaction? Everyone there would be pulling for Andre and if he were to win, the atmosphere would be nothing less than pure magic. I know I'm daydreaming but more unlikely things have happened. If Roddick were to win the tournament it would be amazing as well, having gone out in last year's first round and having a less than stellar year for '06. Then of course there's James Blake. I wouldn't mind seeing him meet either Andy or Andre in the final either. Oh well....by this time next week it will be all but over with. Good luck to my favorites! Oh yeah....one more thing....kick ass Lindsay!!

I've gotten to go twice this week, saw lubicic get trounced, and saw ginepri (my fav, for obvious reasons) play, and got an autograph (i love louis armstrong stadium)
