After a hectic history of rewrites, studio rejections, budget heedlessness, and legal wrangling, the $120-million Watchmen had its premiere in London Monday. Based on the graphic novels by British writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons, the movie is regarded as a superhero flick like none before it.

In his review in the London Times, Kevin Maher wrote: "It's not for the faint-hearted -- and, despite the preponderance of Spandex outfits, capes and costumes, not for kids either. Limbs are broken, bones are smashed and skulls split."

Or as Britain's Guardian newspaper put it: "This is an [R-rated] superhero movie which makes last year's famously brooding Batman sequel The Dark Knight look like Alvin and the Chipmunks."

Steve Anglesey remarked similarly in the London Daily Mirror: "Watchmen is unlikely to steal Slumdog Millionaire's tagline of 'the feel-Good Movie of the year!' but it's searing, spectacular and simply unmissable."

On Time magazine's website, columnist Matt Selman commented, "It's a serious freak-out. ... Watching the visual world of the Watchmen movie unfold was one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had. Not film experiences. Just Experiences."

On the Huffington Post blog, entertainment writer Mike Ragogna concludes: "It will demand your attention and intelligence as it entertains; it's sophisticated and sensationally sophomoric; and for those ... without any expectations or knowledge of the comic's storyline or historical importance, this really will be a blast."

thanks for posting...but why wont any of these reviews write about the story rather than the visual appeal

Because if it's anything like "300" all the movie will have is visual appeal. Regardless of the source material, director Zack Synder is probably more talented at slow motion sequences than anything else. But the critics may still adore it.

and this is exactly what im afraid of...

Relax. Some of the most die hard Watchmen fans ADORE the film. They had a few things to pick at.. But for the most part the film is doing incredibly well with critics.

So far on Rotten Tomatoes it has a 92% - Which is amazing for that site.

I really think Watchmen is gonna blow everyone away.

oh....im just saying....i have a reserve optimism....people hate my opinion of 300

Well, I've never seen 300 in full. Nor have I read the novel. From what I've seen in 300.. I just wasn't getting. Didn't care for most of it. The action was fantastic, but I couldn't care for any of the characters.. There were pricks living a douche bag life style. I can imagine the novel was just the same.

Watchmen however is my favorite novel. But I'm confident that it's gonna blow the public away once it's released in theaters. Critics are already loving it.. And that never happens.

Have a little faith. Have you seen the clips released from the film? For the most part, I'm very impressed.. Though the prison break scene seemed... odd. But it clearly wasn't a finished edit.

honestly i havent been impressed by the trailers...most of the story is from rosarch and dr manhattan...everyone else is just minor characters (in a sense)......the reason i bring up 300 is because he directed it and the director usually has alot of say in what gets cut and what doesnt....i guess its just my pessimism with movies...

The characters will be spread evenly. The trailers just had to come off as flashy.. and what better than to show a naked blue guy and a dude with a crazy mask.

Again, the reviews basically say the film is the novel turned movie.. Supposedly watching the film is an amazing experience..

I friend of mine got a pass to one of these screenings... The dude swears this film does the novel justice and more. It's not the same creature as the book, but is an epic creature made in it's image. That's basically how he described it.

And yeah, I know Zack made 300. Visually it was incredible. But I can't throw in my say on the story. Just not familiar with it.

I have total faith that this movie will be something special. And I'm pretty critical with movies.

im with you con being critical...ive heard both....a friend of mine stationed overseas saw it a i have a couple friends seeing it fri in england...dont worry we'll come back to this thread in a week...and

The positive reviews I've read have not been mildly positive; they have gushed over the film. The one reviewer I read who was negative sounded more negative about the fact a film was made at all.

This movie is going to kill. I just can't stand waiting one more week. (!)

Exactly. It's not like the reviews are "meh" good... they're like "GOD DAMN!" good.

That Ain't It Cool News dude even gushed about the film.. and he's one of the most ridiculous and toughest critics out there...

I am really looking forward to seeing the movie. It looks terrific. But, I'm sorry, I wish people would stop calling it a novel (or even "graphic novel"). It's just a comic. Terribly exciting it may be, but it's not "Ulysses", "The Great Gatsby" or "Pride and Prejudice". It's a superhero, fantasy comic-book adaptation.

Good luck to the film. I'm sure it'll be a winner.

Watchmen was a long complex story broken into a twelve issue comic book series.. It was later turned into a graphic novel.. Most people are familiar with it in it's novel form.

So it's not really a comic book series... It's a long ass story broken into 12 parts that would later rejoin to be an amazing graphic novel. And yes, the proper term for it is graphic novel.

I've seen the trailors for the flick and it looks like they stole some costumes from Bat Man and Wonder Woman...

I'm going to see the Flick on Friday because I'm a SCI-FI fan, i just hope I'm not dissappointed...

It's hard to sell a Flick like this with B-Actors....
