Feeling a bit sad...

An on-line hobby forum that I joined about a year ago does a Secret Santa thing, and I'd looked forward to participating this year. However, I decided for various reasons it would be best if I didn't do it, after all. It felt like the right decision--and still does. But I couldn't help feel a bit sad when I noticed the announcements that matches had been made... I guess the fact I won't be doing this after planning to do it for the last year suddenly felt more real...

Watching a two-hour Great Performances about the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio.

It is a monumental wet dream of a Social Justice Warrior, and deserves the same ultimate fate in the trash. Although the documentary/subversion includes bits of international and historical interest, they are sprinked about the bed linens of a veritable orgy of counterculturalism and redefinition of Shakespeare to make it as un-British as earthly possible. It reeks of cultural appropriation.

The New Yorkification of the legacy is yet another navel-gazing that purports to represent the American people, yet is about as representative as a dinner party at The Ritz.

I'm reminded of a production of Uncle Vanya around 1990 or so that I attended in San Francisco. It was the 2nd worst play I have ever endured. The casting, acting, and execution did real violence to the intent of the playwright.

This Great Performances appears as a beautiful bird that has been snared, handled, killed, and then painted with garish colors to replace its natural plumage, and put on display as a trophy under glass, alien to the true thing and its beauty.

If I drank, I'd drink to forget this bad meal of "art."

Plodding along at the office today...finishing a proposal as a formality for a project...meetings with other clients, sending out contracts and feeling a bit in a fog, maybe from a bit of fever from a deer tick bite that I just found last night. I get to start anti-biotics today so hopefully that will clear up some of this.

Watching the last half of American Pastoral again.

Ewan McGregor should have gotten a Golden Globe or something for that performance. He's so good.

I hate the ending. It's a cop out. She returns, but you don't get to see her arrested or whatever happens, and that would be the big story, not Swede dying.

The novel must have ended better. It won a Pulitizer.

About to go knead the dough for a double batch of Cafeteria Rolls for 20 minutes. Oh, goody.

Love the smell of yeast baking though. Shoudl be done and in bed by 10.

Off to the office...have a proposal to submit today...fortunately it only has to be combined in PDF and sent.

Just in from finishing up planting a few dozen pansies and some kale out front at the end of the driveway where the county messed up my plantings this past summer. The fill dirt they put back was almost all clay. Even tilling in yards of compost and peat and leaves, it is still in clods and pellets like sheep droppings.

Editing and updating our Wills to get signed this week.

Our old ones are way out of date and the accident in front of our place a few weeks ago have me a bit rattled.
