I think it depends on the kid. My mom took my brother and I to see The Nutcracker a few times, starting when I was about 5. I wasn't terribly impressed, but my brother (a year younger) sat in awe for the entire thing.
Just make sure it isn't a musical theatre production. Don't want to get'em hooked when they're young or did you not see Broadway Bro down?
