backstory

Spent the last few months staying with my nephew as I was contemplating moving to the area where he lives. I was there to check out jobs, locations, places to live, cost of living etc and since I had the time, just wanted to spend it with family, reconnecting, bonding etc.

You could be right, in that he is trying to emulate "you" or your adventures, and is seeking approval, even by way of a threesome.
He may be taking your lack of response, to what is an obvious invitation to join in, as some form of rejection.
This he will have difficulty with because of the close bond you both share. My advice, be open and honest and explain that even though you are tempted, you feel it may disrupt the friendship.

You may be onto something there.
I know he does look up to me although he would never admit it for fear of being seen as weak or less of a man.

He started to take on some of my personality traits, quirks, expressions, mannerisms, jokes and sense of humor. It was actually rather touching and endearing, I dare say cute to watch him copy me just in everyday actions. After helping him get a vehicle (long story) he started parking his truck next to mine, parking it the same way I park as well...backing it in.

I have tried to talk to him about some of this, it's just not exactly as easy to approach it as other things.

I'm hoping maybe some time and experiences of his own may help.

small update.....
