"Wherever you go, there you are."

I use that phrase a lot. But then, I know a lot of people who are always trying to outrun things instead of facing them down and resolving them. Like my cousin used to move every time she got depressed about her life... she must have moved from San Jose to Sacramento and back like fifteen times in five years. It simply never occurred to her that the fact that she had two kids she didn't really want and no education with which to get a good enough job and no relationship skills to bring to either her love life or her family life was what was making her life miserable, not the relative locations of kitchen and bath. My sister did the same thing... she even moved to Washington and Oklahoma in the quest for this mythical "better place."

It simply doesn't exist. I mean, yeah, sometimes "doing a geographic" shakes the dust out of your life and gives you the impetus to start fresh; and there are certain problems we have that can simply be moved away from... like certain people. But if you drag the same stale baggage with you to the new place, doing the exact same things you did to make your old place stale and lifeless, then you just wasted a lot of money on rental deposits and moving trucks; if you keep going after that same kind of person, you always have such a person in your life, and you haven't escaped the problem at all.

The problem is you. And wherever you go, there you are.

I never thought of it as a phrase dealing with escapingonesself. I originally interpreted it as making a statement about accepting life as it comes. No matter how bad your path has been, no matter how shitty the place you're in right now is, you're there and the only option is moving forward.

This sounds more appropriate for "When the going gets tough, The tough get going"

I've discovered that wherever I WAS, I'm not THERE anymore and even MORE twistedly, wherever I WANT to be, I'm not THERE yet, either.

OH! the relativistic enigma of it all.
