Why does JUB have such a crappy search function?

Over and over I despair of JUB's search engine because it is so lame. This time I was trying to find the sci fi bar thread, but of course the search engine won't look for short words.

What will it take to get a real search engine instead of a piece of crap I could have written at college twenty years ago?

I don't have any problems with Jub's search functions

here's the thread you're looking for...

http://www.justusboys.com/forum/threads/99024-The-Sci-Fi-bar?p=1414157&viewfull=1#post1414157

I searched for threads using "science fiction" as the term

I did that as well, and got pages of results. I also searched for "sci-fi", and got no results. A good search engine will not exclude any nouns at all, regardless of length -- the parameters on this one are marks of lazy-ass programmers.

But thanks for the link.

I got 4 pages...found your thread on page 2 about 1/3 of the way down or so
took less than a minute
don't understand how you couldn't find it

I hate JUB's search function. It hardly ever shows me what I am looking for the first time I look.

hi thynight ...some were worried on here about you earlier....

Agreed. It is a truly awful search function. It doesn't help that when you try to research different keywords, you have to wait a period of time because of its "anti-spam feature."

Interesting, I've tried searching for a PHRASE like that before, *AND* I put it in quotes, and it seems to bring up EVERY thread. Perhaps it's bringing up threads with "science" in them AND threads with "fiction" in them. I've tried it on the Advanced Search as well. Usually I'm able to remember at least one "rare" word from the thread, like the one time I wanted to re-find my chili recipe I stuck in "marjoram" I think. Not many threads use that word.

The search function is FAR better than the unfathomably horrible Facebook one, though.

Yeah, it can get a bit frustrating sometimes. You just have to know what to search for and be very precise in regards to "searching posts" or "searching threads".

I use Google to find anything in JUB. Way easier, and more reliable.

lol oh yeah
it works great as a backup search for me.

The minimum of 3-4 characters is common for most search engines of various scripts, as otherwise, if everybody would search for less than four characters, it would be quite stressful for the server to spit out all the results. That's why mainly Google allows for shorter searches, they can afford it.

I never even thought of that.

And it matters which search box is used -- one level on the screen throws you off into the free porn clips, full of pasty chav twinks. ACK!

Yeah -- using anything but "Advanced Search" (meaning, not quite as lame as the other) is useless.

The only thing that needs to be excluded is articles and maybe pronouns. People aren't going to go searching for "bar" any more than they are for "parking".

Maybe we're spoiled from using search engines for places like Cornell and Stanford.

you get what you pay for ;)

indexing can be a resource-intensive pain in the ass, and as mentioned, integrating 3rd party appliance like the google servers into the mix can be expensive.

it's probably worth it if you're a university or library and need to support thousands of users searching through academic articles... maybe not so much if you're a porn site reliant on images for the bulk of your content anyways.
