Police say Erie County mother used infant as bludgeon
Tuesday, October 10, 2006

By Cindi Lash and Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

After a night of drinking, Chytoria Lata Graham returned home early Sunday and quarreled with her live-in boyfriend, Deangelo Troop, she told police.

Pushing led to shoving and throwing things before she "snapped,'' the Erie woman told police. She grabbed the couple's month-old son and swung him through the air by the legs, using the blanket-swaddled infant as a weapon to strike her boyfriend.

Mr. Troop punched her back, prompting her to leave her apartment and call 911, she told police. When officers arrived, they found the baby, Jarron Troop, suffering from severe head injuries, and arrested Ms. Graham for causing them.

Ms. Graham, 27, remained in the Erie County Jail yesterday, unable to post $75,000 bond on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault. Erie police said her baby, who was born Sept. 11, was taken first to an Erie hospital and later flown by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Hospital officials would not release information about the baby yesterday. Police, at different times yesterday, said he was in critical condition and in serious but stable condition.

Erie County District Attorney Bradley Foulk said the baby was injured during the brawl around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the second-floor duplex apartment his parents shared in the 300 block of East Fourth Street in downtown Erie.

"Never, never, never -- I can never remember anything like this," Mr. Foulk said.

In an affidavit filed to support Ms. Graham's arrest, police said baby Jarron was in a drug-induced coma in an intensive-care unit at the hospital. They said he suffered a fracture of the right temporal region and bleeding in his brain after Ms. Graham swung him and smacked his head against her boyfriend's midsection.

Erie police Capt. Frank Kwitowski said Mr. Troop, 20, is the father of Jarron and another of Ms. Graham's four children. The Erie County Office of Children and Youth ordered the other children removed from the home.

Temporary custody was granted to their maternal grandparents, Gloria Graham and Cornell Petty of Erie. Officials in Erie County Family Court yesterday said no hearings had been scheduled pertaining to custody of Jarron or his siblings.

Ms. Graham surrendered to police Sunday after learning she was wanted in connection with the injuries inflicted on her son, police said. When investigators questioned her, she "gave a statement and admitted to all the facts as we know them," Capt. Kwitowski said.

According to the affidavit, Ms. Graham told police she was out drinking Saturday night and early Sunday and began arguing with and shouting at Mr. Troop when she came home. During the dispute, she said, she threw several items at Mr. Troop before turning and grabbing baby Jarron from the bed and swinging him to hit Mr. Troop, the affidavit states.

Ms. Graham said she put the baby down, then fled after Mr. Troop punched her in the eye. Police said they found furniture knocked over and broken household goods in the apartment.

Police said they later took a second statement from Ms. Graham in which she told them there was no chance Mr. Troop hit their baby. Two of her children corroborated her story, police said.

Mr. Troop could not be reached yesterday and other relatives declined comment.

truly nightmarish

And they say gay people are a bad environment for children. Go figure.

Although many prosecutors are too troglodytic to know better, although many journalists want ratings more than justice and security, we know that we don't know what was going on at the time. Blaming only her does no good.
Society as a whole needs to see how it is too blame in each of our micro-proportions. If not, shit like this will just go on and on and on and on and on....

I, too, have to admit that the idea of it made me laugh. Being close to Erie County it was in the local news and I was so shocked that it happened I couldn't help but laugh. I'm a demon, I realize. But past the initial shock I think it is ridiculous and hope that everything is sorted out and the child is placed in a better home.

There is no punishment too great for this kind of behavior. Any loving, caring parent would lay down his life for his child. These people are so self absorbed they regard the child as little more than a weapon to be used against each other.

It is truly horrifying. If they ever get any of their children back, something is seriously wrong with the child protection services and the courts.

You know, we need a license to drive. So, why not a license to breed?

But I am a big fan of government subsidised sterilization.

;)

I was trying to make a general point. It is so easy for our society these days to burn the witch. We don't know what happened. If the woman was mentally diminished not by her own fault, then the witch might not need burning, so to speak. We don't know what evil the boyfriend was dumping on her.
I hope you never have to experience what it's like to be outta your mind.
I've been to the edge several years back and wouldn't recommend the experience.
If she had it a lot worse, I could understand doing something you really didn't mean to do.
But on the other hand, we don't know that she's blameless.
Real tragedies don't get better by having more tragedy dumped on 'em.
On the other hand I don't object to whatever storm-prevention is appropriate when it has to do with the careless, the cruel, the arrogantly-ignorant and so on.

It really doesn't matter what the story is, No one should EVER use a 4 week old baby as a baseball bat weapon. Especially not it's mother! There's no excuse for it.

That's true, but when I read the story, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of horrible things must have happened to her in her life, that would allow her to do this. This didn't happen because her boyfriend beat her up, or they got in a fight. There has to have been numerous incidents that led up to this violence.

Just like serial killers don't just one day decide to go out and kill people. They start out by torturing animals, then killing animals, then torturing people before they graduate to killing people.

It's a horribly sad story all around.

OK, this is a completely horrible story and the lady is obviously psycho....

But is it wrong that I want to put her mugshot in my photos?

I worked in foster care for children for sevral years - the things that people do to infants and children are stunning beyond any way to express it

the one thing we were taught so we could deal with the adults: never visualize.

I live in Erie, where this happen....the sad fact is, I was watching the news tonight and she is trying to say that it's her boyfriends fault for abusing her and that is why she acted out...who the **F*****K** picks up a defenseless infant and swings them like a rag doll...she better get more than the usual slap on the wrist.

I hate these sort of "insanity" defences...

"To do something that bad she must not have been in her right mind..."
"we don't know what abuse she must have been suffering to cause this.."
etc
etc

B U L L S H I T

Whatever caused it, if she is capable of such behaviour - to anyone unless in self-defence! - let alone to an innocent child - she needs to be put down in my opinion.

It makes my skin crawl.
