Josh Schwartz is well-versed in teen drama and genetically gifted frenemies, but how will he handle mutant superheroes and rabid fandom?

Schwartz, creator of Gossip Girl and The O.C., has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to pen X-Men: First Class, a reboot of the Marvel franchise featuring a new group of genetically enhanced youngsters undergoing instruction at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. First Class will be the small-screen achiever's first foray into a major theatrical production.

The 32-year-old writer-producer is expected to inject the new addition to the X-Men canon—which soon will include X-Men Origins: Wolverine and another prequel focusing on the villainous Magneto—with his finely honed flair for showcasing teenage angst and modern coming-of-age sensibilities.

And while the possibility of directing the flick was posed to him, Schwartz has opted to stick to writing for now, according to Variety.

The trade reports that First Class could feature characters who have been glimpsed in the previous X-Men pictures, such as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat.

I've always wanted a more "New Mutants" X-Men movie. If they actually go through with making such a film, I just hope they can make appealing to both comic geeks (like I) and people who have only been following the movie series. And hopefully it wont be as corny as X3. Sure, I liked all the comic references inserted here and there (Stepford Cuckoos, Angel Salvadore, etc), but man was the dialogue ever cheesy.

Now if only I can get to Vancouver or where ever they're filming to be cast as an extra at the school...

hopefully they'll put the same effort into these as they did with the FF, Iron Man and Hulk movies. i didn't MIND the original X trilogy, but after years of waiting for an X-Men movie to be made they were something of a letdown.

Please no more Iceman and Rogue. I want new mutants that we haven't even seen on the big screen yet.

i know it would never happen, but i would lose my damn mind if the included Blink. or better yet Meltdown(i refuse to acknowledge her as "Boom Boom"). i've always thought the girl who played "Anna" on The OC(she's also on "Dirty Sexy Money" i think) would be perfect as Tabitha Smith.

Not excited about the writer since I don't like those shows but I usually like anything X-men.

Sounds like a good idea since all 6 of those characters didn't get enough screen time. Especially Colossus, Jubilee, and Angel. I'd never get tired of Iceman. *|*

Um, the X-Men films slaughter Hulk. Especially X2.

It would be pretty cool to see and new franchise of X-Men hit the big screen. Even though the originals were great, I was a bit disapointed with them. Colossus would be great, Jubalee, Gambit, Angel. Bring back Phoenix and battle the Shi'ar.

This is not good news. I don't want to see more teen age drama. This is an action series first. As for storyline? Magneto is done. Let's see Apocalypse & the 4 Horsemen!!!

Ugh. Why does everything have to be turned into episode of the OC? They're even doing this with Star Trek and it seems so forced. What next? A teen Golden Girls?

I'm a huge fan of the X-Men but I think the biggest problem with all the movies is there are too many characters and too many stories to tell for live action versions to work. Plus they get directors who are not familiar with the stories and characters.

The moviegoers at large are not familiar with the stories or the characters either. As someone who is a fan of the original comic series, I think the films do a good job of trying to stay true to the stories while at the same time making it accessible. Which is why each film has done exponentially better at the box office than the last.

(Though two of the casting choices really bug me because they really seem to not "get" their characters at all."

I have so much to see on this but I can't put together the words. Tons of different mutants and powers are flying through my head that would be a better pick, like Anole! And not just cause he's gay

What casting choices are you referring to? Although I love Famke and James Marsden I thought they were awful choices for Scott and Jean. They don't have the right look or chemistry.

Halle and Anna were ok but I didnt think either of them had the right look. Halle is too beautiful in a delicate way and I always imagined Storm as a beautiful warrior woman.

And moviegoers are not familiar with any story until they see it. They need writers and directors who actually have a respect and appreciation for the stories to do them justice. Brett Ratner especially made a mess of the story. It seemed like he had no knowledge of the comics or previous films. You can clearly see Jean's Phoenix power begin to manifest as fire-related in the second film then that was completely abandoned in the 3rd.

I just wish Cyclops hadn't died in X3 pointlessly. That's what ruined the film, and now leaves the series in a state of unknown.

I was referring to Halle and Anna. I believe Bryan Singer told them not to read any of the comics, but I wish they would have because I don't think either of them represented the characters well at all. She played her like some lame emo naive teenage girl. Which I suppose I could've dealt with in the first movie but there was hardly any growth in the second and third. Completely agree about Halle. Not only does she LOOK too delicate for Storm, she PLAYED her delicately as well. Storm is not this soft-spoken little pussycat like Halle played her.

And you're right about Brett Ratner. Storywise, the third one was a mess. But I loved X2.

I want new mutants that get decent screen time and then get killed off... I remember looking at the "credits" and saw that the "enemies" were supposed to be some mutants that were added randomly and killed off. It disappointed me a lot. Hopefully this one will be good.

So I'm pretty torn about this....I love X-Men & I did watch the OC, but I'd never would have picked one of those writers to interpret an X-Men related story

I keep picturing something like Buffy, but with X-Men and not as good...I don't know
