Re: 10 plus 1

1) Karen Carpenter
2) Ella Fitzgerald
3) Whitney Houston (pre-crack)
4) Barbara Streisand
5) Dusty Springfield

Has anyone here ever listened to Celtic Woman? Their soloist singers have some of the most fantastic voices I have ever heard. Sometimes the members change, and although not everyone sings in every song, there are always four or five soloist singers.

Their voices blend better than any I've ever heard, especially in this song:

And this is just magnificent:

I also like how classy this entire ensemble is. Sometimes it's nice to enjoy some music that's just so PURE. And something refreshingly different from pop performances: no elaborate dancing required - the music's perfect all by itself.

Maybe not the greatest vocalist, but here's a list of my personal favs, in no order because that would be too difficult.

Ladies:
Sarah McLachlan
Amy Lee
Utada Hikaru

Katherine Jenkins

Gentlemen:

Maria Callas -- I'm totally serious. Singing 'Casta Diva!' from Bellini's 'Norma'.

How could anyone call Mariah Carey, Beyonce, or Whitney 'Divas'?

A 'diva' is a coloratura soprano in the Bel Canto tradition. 'Brava, Diva!', not 'you go, girl!'

I agree that none of the vocalists who need microphones to be heard can touch the opera singers for vocal talent. And although HenryReardon doesn't agree with me, Maria Callas is my fave. The final scene where Madama Butterfly dies is particularly great.

Of course, Birgit Nilson singing Isolde's Liebestod is unbelievable as well.
