20th century Top 40 music to the mid-2000s is better than stuff after that to today. Who agrees?

Who agrees with me that today's Hip-hop, R&B, Dance, Techno, "Pop," and Rap should not be considered Pop Music or Top 40 music. While there were and are still Country cross-overs and Country-Pop, etc. Country still has its own stations while Rap and similar stuff has dominated Pop/Top 40 stations for over a decade and get to have their own stations too like having their cake and getting to eat it too.

While each decade is dramatically different than the next after 2004 or 2005 everything that was supposedly Pop and Top 40 started sounding no so much like music anymore and many songs like lack good lyrics, rhythm, harmony, melody, etc.

Of course this is my opinion. I was born in the early 80s and grew up in the 90s as well but also enjoy songs, artists, and styles from the 70s and late 60s and a few things from the 50s and early 60s and early 2000s. I find songs here and there throughout the 2000s and 2010s I like. I like Adele, Pharell Williams, some Pink, some of Lady Gaga (not all) and some retro sounding stuff from this decade and the last.

I know everyone loves the decade or decades they grew up in and thinks the later ones and possibly previous ones suck but I like everything that was before me and I really do think most of the Pop/Top 40 from the 2000s and this decade REALLY DO SUCK in style, talent, artists, etc. There are some artists with good voices like Rihanna who have a few good songs but I think the majority of her songs would sound better with better lyrics and different styles for example.

Just because it's a new decade doesn't mean they have to change too much or do away with all the old styles, etc. if they were good and people still enjoy it. I miss the Folk-Pop as well of the late 90s like Shawn Colvin's Sunny Came Home and Country-Pop from LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, and Shania Twain, and stuff from Spice Girls and all the boy bands, and Bitch and What Would Happen by Meredith Brooks, and Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Madonna, and many more. The 80s was certainly a great and unique decade in music while the 90s especially late 90s had a lot of eclectic styles (numerous styles on one station!). Mid to late 1996 through 2000 was favorites of the 90s.

Adele's Rolling in the Deep song could fit into any decade of music.

I feel like people in their 20s and teens and even little kids grow up listening to crappy music that has no talent behind it (of course I'm not a singer so they have more talent than me but I don't feel they have anything close to their predecessors) and think that that is great stuff but they are missing out on what real music sounds like. I've heard of people in their 20s who actually like previous decades better. If you notice movies that don't play all the new rappy, hip-hoppy stuff will play songs from previous decades because that is the only thing they can find that sounds good.

^LOL....right

I can't wait for the new iron maiden cd

Best era of music....real music was the big band era.....they looked like they had so much fun back in the ol days.

For me though....music started to suck really bad after the 80s
I'm so glad I was a teen in the 80s.....we had tons of fun

I was a kid in the 80s and teen in the 90s so I love the 90s too but it seems about anything after the early 2000 to mid-2000s really, really sucks except for a few exceptions here and there. There are probably about 3 to 5 songs I really like per year since then but I can listen to just about anything and everything from the 20th century that is pop, country-pop, country-rock, rock, pop-rock, country-crossovers, folk-pop, Top 40, easy listening, adult contemporary, basically anything that isn't hardcore rap and hip-hop. I like a little bit of everything.

Don't you agree that the majority of Top 40 songs/artists in this decade sound alike and are hard to tell apart? I don't even understand what they are saying half the time.

Sorry to necro an old thread but its the rise of Auto-Tune that's turned today's music going back at lest two decades suspect to me. Many artists and producers won't even admit to using it so there's no way to definitely tell which artists have had their vocals enhanced or fixed by the software but I have heard its very prevalent. I prefer older music not just because I'm nostalgic but I just rather hear a real human voice by an artist with genuine human talents and abilities over some electronic monstrosity passing as talent.

Mainstream music really went down the toilet after 2002 for me. By 2003 I couldn't stand music anymore!

And that younger generation will be feeling the same way about future music and agree that the music of today is great and the music about 20yrs from now would be rubbish to them.

There is loads of great music around even now. I bet there was some terrible cheesey music around in the 80s and 90s.

Just take a look at how amazing and talented these two ladies are. This catchy great will be a classic in a few decades from now and its ALREADY a great right now.

Also, Kim Kardashian wasn't everywhere years ago so that must have sucked.
