22 and receding hairline

See a doctor, and investigate some options.

Losing hair at 22 is not unheard of. One guy I used to work with already had a bald spot at 22. Another guy has more gray than brown hair at 25.

Two friends of mine were in similar situations, around your age.

Friend one tried Propecia and he hasn't lost any hair since (this is about six years later).

The other also used Propecia and it didn't help at all. He then tried Rogaine (or the generic alternative) and he's having more luck with that, although he says he starts losing hair again if he isn't strict with his regimen.

So keep trying different things until you find something that works.

meh...i'm 24 and already have alot of grey hair. i kinda like it though. my sister's 29 and is almost totally grey.

Rogaine is recommended for male hair loss on the crown of the head. It sounds like your hair loss is over a larger area and more toward the front of your head, so Rogaine would not be the best option for you.

This type of baldness is often inherited from the mother's side of the family, not the father's. Propecia is the recommended drug since it blocks the testosterone metabolite that is believed to trigger the hair loss. Unfortunately, Propecia will slow the hair loss but it will not stop it.

See a dermatogist. They can evaluate the problem and discuss your options with you.

I can relate to you! I'm 26 and my hairline has been receding for a few years now. My dad is quite bald as well as grandpa's on both sides. I'm screwed. It's honestly the thing I hate most. It makes me unbelievably self conscious. It's the one thing I would change if I could, it's constantly on my mind. :*(

My father is over 70, and still has all his hair.

I started losing mine when I turned 19. :) However, on the plus side, it's been a VERY slow loss. It only now has reached the "curve" of my head...a full two decades later. And only on either side, so I sort of look like I have two "divots".

How can you deal with it? By dealing with it. Let it happen. It'll only matter if you make it matter.

It fucking sucks to start losing your hair young- I started at 20. I avoided haircuts for over a year and then bit the bullet and used clippers and gave myself a longish buzzcut (3/4 inch). Honestly I feel a lot more confident just knowing I don't have to try to put my hair a certain way to hide my hairline and I get a lot more people telling me I'm attractive than I did before. And I like doing it myself rather than going someplace public and paying money and tip etc.

I started buying proscar through an online pharmacy. It's like propecia but 5x the dose so I cut the pills in 5 pieces and take one a day, much more cost effective. There are generic brands too which are even cheaper, but proscar and propecia are the only ones FDA approved. I avoided rogaine only because I am too lazy to apply stuff to my scalp twice a day.

As for how effective it is, I have only been on it about six months but haven't noticed any new hair loss which was occurring pretty damn rapidly. They say to give it at least a year though to tell. I've said more than necessary but that's because I researched the hell out of this topic and any success always came back to the same two products: Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride).
