I'm sure there is someone on JUB that can offer some sort of advice ...

This has been an issue for about a month and a half now ...

I noticed at first that there was blood in my bowel movements ... mostly when I wiped, after the movement. Over time, the blood was becoming visible in the toilet ... and (I apologize if this disgusts anyone) at times I'd notice the blood splattered around the toilet bowl. The blood is red red. When I wipe, the first wipe often covers the entire piece of tissue with blood.

Over this time, I've been constipated off and on. And lately, including this very moment, I've been dealing with some sharp pains through the groin area, and lower stomach.

Thus far, I've used Senokot's stool softener and laxative. Usually the day following that, the bowel movement goes ok, but still has some blood. Then it's back to square 1.

Tonight I am going to buy suppositories, and see if that makes any difference. I've already used Prep H.

Any suggestion? Have any of you dealt with this? And should I see a doctor right away, or try out the suppositories for a couple of days?

(oh, and excuse the spelling in the title of the topic :| )

If you haven't seen any improvement in a month and a half then you should definitely go to a doctor.

^^^^^^

what he said, thats to long to go with the issue still going on.

You need a check up by doctor to rule out anything else..

Home stuff does not always work and it may sometimes hide the issue and it gets worse...

go see doctor ASAP.....

Blood in the stool could indicate a serious medical condition. Do not wait another day. You should see a doctor immediately.

I'll add another voice suggesting you see a doctor in the very near future.

Laxatives, generally, aren't good for long-term use. They treat the temporary problem (being bound up) but they don't cure the problem of why you're bound up. Sometimes, the "fix" for that problem can be fairly simple, such as a better diet, more exercise, and so forth.

Generally speaking red blood, such as you describe, suggests that the problem is more likely toward the bottom end of things. There could be any one of a number of reasons for that -- such as haemorrhoids, a tear, or whatever. I won't speculate, since I don't know. If you were bleeding further up in your system, from an ulcer, for example, the blood would have been at least partially digested, and your poop would possibly be tarry or black.

Unless the pain is severe, and/or you're losing massive quantities of blood, it's likely not an emergency -- but it does sound like it's something you should have checked out as soon as is practically possible.

Echoing the chorus.

Stop the laxatives. Stop the suppositories.

You need to make an appointment with your doctor ASAP.

On occasion, there may be a day or two following constipation or heavy duty anal sex that you may see blood on your toilet paper or in the toilet.

You're past the "couple of days" point. Now, off to the doctor. Pronto. Rapidement. Schnell. Quickly.

Very likely you have a fissure. A tear in the rectum. Unless very serious surgery is not required. I have had the same problem. Doctor suggested lots of fibre and water to soften your stool and it often helps to lubricate before a bowel movement. Mine started after being constipated from tylenol#3's.

So, it has been a few days since I posted this thread ... and here's the update:

I decided to pass on the option to go to my doctor's open clinic on Thursday night. And I bought the suppositories, as I mentioned I would, in the original post, above.

Since using the suppositories, after just a few days ... I notice a difference. The hemorrhoids must have shrunk a bit, because my bowel movements aren't bloody anymore, and they do not hurt as much ... and the little bit of discomfort I do feel is nothing like it was.

The option is still open for me to see a doctor during the week, which I may still do ... but it seems things are working with these suppositories!

No blood must be a good thing, right?

Oh, and thanks for all of the advice ... you guys are great!

Bright red blood isn't a TERRIBLE issue; that's just blood from the surface of the rectum. Dark red blood means it's a symptom of internal bleeding, which is much more serious.

That being said, it's been going on for a month and a half. See a doctor.

Yeah i agree. We learnt at uni whilst studying bowel pathology that if the blood is red its usualy a haemorroid or something that can be easily treated. But if the blood is dark you shouldn't waste any time. not trying to steal your answer, but supporting its credibility :-)

It sounds like hemorrhoids to me--when they dry up they should start to itch-
they are usually caused by constipation and straining when you go--so eat dried prunes or stool softener--you probably should see a doctor, though, just to be sure.

I finally went to the doctor today ... upon first check she said things look ok, but she sent me for bloodwork ... and a couple of tests, and I may have to have the light shoved up the rear :P

Thanks again for the advice!

You did the right thing by going to the dr. I have had both a fissure and hemmeroids. They can become very very very bad. They hurt and bleed and cause you the worst pain. I couldnt lay, sit, or walk. I had emergency surgery the following day after going to the Dr. three times and not being able to work or enjoy life at all. After the surgery IT WAS AMAZING to not feel like my insides were not being pushed thru my ass. I would advise telling everyone to have the surgery to correct the hemmroids and fishers. It is worth it.

As someone who is a 25 year survivor of colon cancer, I tell you simply I would not rest until I had a colonoscopy. Colon cancer is curable when caught early; it can be bad news if it is not. Stay with it.

Having "the light shoved up the rear" as you say is not bad. I had it done shortly after my 26th birthday last year. It was helpful in finding polyps and a slew of other problems including a potentially harmful bacterial infection. The pain you describe is familiar and so I recommend a colonoscopy. The procedure itself is painless but the prep is hell.
