The next 24Hour Fitness that became my regular for a number of years was probably built in the 70's and had a small, but open communal shower. My current regular 24HourFitness opened I think in 2001. The showers have translucent dividers between them but no curtains or doors and are actually rather open. You can see A LOT! The gym I went to on Friday opened about 3 years ago and has what I can only describe as semi-communal showers. Let me explain. The locker room is one big, open room, rectangular in shape with lockers lining the opposite walls. At the end, there is a mirrored area with hair dryers on the wall and next to that is the sink area with a long mirror and about 5 sinks. Opposite them is the door to the rest room and on the same side, at the end, is the entrance to the shower room. When you enter the shower room immediately in front of you is the private shower with a curtain. But then this is where it gets interesting. The rest of the shower room extends to the right of the private shower, in a rectangular shape. But instead of having shower heads on the walls opposite each other with dividers, there are two shower head s on the end wall side by side, with no dividers between them, but dividers behind them. In other words, these two showers are completely open to each other, with no partition or anything between them. Then, on the other side of this back partition, there are 2 more shower heads side by side with no barriers, and then one more on the other side of these opposite the private shower. It is almost a communal shower, but not quite. I find it most intrigueing. There is another even newer 24Hour, just opened a year ago near me, with this same design. So maybe after all locker room showers are becoming more open and communal again. We can always hope.
