I've been nothing but happy with OSX on my macbook but I've gone back to Windows and am quite impressed. Bought a new HP desktop with 7 home premium installed. Besides it having an almost mac-like GUI, it's stable and fast. Had some reservations about switching back but I'm glad I did.

The cost of a mac desktop was just too much for what you get. So you apple users, don't be afraid to give it a try.

At $320 (Win 7 Ultimate @ Amazon), I'd hardly call Windows 7 a bargain!

Hey Welcome back T-Rexx, good to see you x

I just bought OSX Snow Leopard £25. I have a friend with mac and a Dell with windows 7. He often goes off line on Dell and texts me "BSOD" so I woun't be going back any time soon.

Yea! Yea! Happy New Year! T-Rexx is back.

Welcome back. (*8*)

.....One thing that really sucks for Windows users is having to buy Word. (I'd always assumed it was free like AppleWorks and iLife is for Macusers). Having to buy Word blows big-time.

That problem is solved by using Open Office. It does everything that MS Office does and is free.

It is a shame that all of the other posters did not read this :] Maybe you will hackintosh in the future
iLife was not free with my last purchase btw

If you buy a new Mac like as you have done with a new HP you get iLife. So it's a fair comparison. When you throw in iPhoto, iWeb, Garageband, iDVD, iMovie, and even DVD Player you're getting something with your computer that no Windows machine is doing except via trial-ware. These apps separately would cost you hundreds more so you can't just look at the cost and say, "That's what the machine costs." For me Garageband makes it worth it. Oh and the little things like being able to handle .iso files natively and not having to buy any CD/DVD burning software.

What does garageband do?

He wrote about the hardware. Apple hardware is indeed much more expensive than standard one.

I had a look at the online Apple shop and you can buy iWork with a new Mac.

As for Word, you don't have to buy it. Windows comes with WordPad, or you download OpenOffice for free.

What does garageband do?
It's generic music making software.

Isn't iLife free?
iLife is free in as far as it's included with the Mac OS - which you pay for.

It doesn't include the office apps. Those are in iWorks, which is not included for "free", but it's very reasonably priced - I think around $100. If you want free, then you can install Open Office on the Mac.

I have been thinking about getting a small Win 7 notebook, but then again I could just use VM or Parallels.

Been A Mac person for the last 4 years also and PC/Microsoft would have to do something 1000 time better than Windows 7 to get me to move back to them.

Got my first mac book 4 years ago its still going strong I know many of my friends have change their laptop 2 to 3 times.

Apple have got it down and they have my loyalty :)

But if you fine that you are happy with windows 7 good look and happy for you...

Put Win7 in a VM or boot camp. Then you have the best hardware and your Windows.
Apple hardware isn't superior. They're essentially an Intel PC with the 'logic board' needing to be replaced just as often as any burned out motherboard.

You probably posted the most expensive asking price on the internet. I've seen home edition being sold for around $100.
You can buy a new Mac Mini CPU for as little as $599 and it probably works with the monitor and keyboard you already have, and with the right software you can run both Mac and Windows programs on it. And the specs are very impressive: http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html
Depending on what you'd use the mac mini for, that's not a great deal. That cost the same as the HP PC I bought- which has a 1GB ATI gaming graphics card, 6 GB of ram, a quad-core CPU and 1 TB hardrive. It also worked out of the box ;)

No, I posted the cheapest price I could find for the most common version of Windows.

The least expensive version of Home Premium begins at $180 (USD). Perhaps you've seen Home Edition Upgrade sold for around $100 - but that only applies if you are upgrading a computer that already has Windows on it.

I got my Windows 7 Pro for $30. Windows 7 = different looking vista. no two operating systems are more alike.

but they have those commercials with the guy wearing glasses in the shower...how can that be

OS X works best for my needs, but I do agree that Win 7 is much better than Microsoft's other recent offerings.

I agree with rotary though that Apple hardware is not superior. In fact Apple often lags in putting in the very latest hardware, the software is more their selling point.

... I can't talk to you people anymore.

Picking Windows 7 over Snow Leopard... *shakes head and walks away*

Isn't iLife free?

My information is admittedly old. When I bought my present computer, it was loaded with AppleWorks, which is somewhere between WordPad and Word in its capabilities. Many people feel AppleWorks was badly underrated, and it converts .doc files, anyway.

A new windows computer usually comes with MS Works installed. it's also somewhere between wordpad and Word.

There are some special prices out there for windows 7. Students for example can get it much cheaper. MS had done that before with previous versions of windows. But most folks buying it as stand alone software are going to pay over a 100 bucks.

Should have kept looking! ;)

You can buy a digital OEM version for $120: (And that's for the ultimate edition! Premium is $90, Pro is $100)

And your basis for comparison would be...?

(Damn iZombies. They... just... keep... coming!)
