Confirmed: $100 price drop, new 80GB PS3 coming August

The PS3 is now $499, effective immediately. In addition, a new SKU will come out in August, ringing in at $599. It will include the previously exclusive-to-Korea 80GB PS3, as well as the full retail version of Motorstorm.

While it is interesting that Sony is moving back to two SKUs, the new $599 package doesn't sound particularly enticing. Motorstorm is a fantastic game and the extra 20 GB is nice, but paying an extra $100 for it seems a bit expensive. How does it tickle your fancy?

PS3 price drop causes a 2800% jump in sales at Amazon.com

It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.
While it's hard to judge the success of the price cut in only one day, it's interesting to see how many people are snapping up the new $499 PS3. A price cut of $100 is not insignificant but the PS3 is still the most expensive console, and industry watchers were curious to see just how many people would be moved to purchase the console after a 'mere' 17% price drop.

Judging from the early evidence though, the answer is 'a lot.'

now they are as much as a iPhone. the question now is, which one is more fun?

I wouldn't buy either really. But I'd prolly choose a PS3 over iAnything.

I'll stick with my Xbox 360 Thank you very much...It only cost me $399.99 plus tax on Boxing day for the 20 gig hard drive version.

Gears of War, Shadowrun, Rainbow Six: Vegas compared to the only good PS3 game out right now, that being Resistence: Fall of Man!

I hear a Rumble Controller is coming with the 80 gig in august. That is, rumble and sixasis. Its just a rumor though. ^^

It's still not worth it I'd say, I would like for it to drop down to the 400 dollars.

Uh oh... aparently the whole price cut thing on the 60GB model was simply to get rid of them!

E3: No more 60GB PlayStation 3 in US after July, says Reeves

'All they're doing is taking their stock and marking the price down'

SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

Reeves was speaking at an E3 event to announce the introduction of a new PS3 bundle in Europe. When asked about possible criticisms over whether SCEE should have given consumers the option to pay a lower price, as SCEA has done, he replied, "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, "In America, yes."

SCEA announced a USD 100 price cut for PlayStation 3 earlier this week. A new 80GB model will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm and will retail for USD 599.
