The Deadline is 7 May 2025, all States must comply.

Real ID is a federal law that sets minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards.
Real ID will be required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities starting May 7, 2025.

On this side of the pond I think we all assumed that you already had to have a valid ID ready to produce at any time

I got mine when I renewed my DL away back in 2021 :=D:

This PSA / warning is a bit late, as I was aware of the need to upgrade one's ID's as far back as 2015

That's the delaying power of the States, convincing Congress to delay implementation from 2005 - to 2025.

You do. "Real ID" is an additional level of federally standardized and certified identity that is added to your driver's license or state ID. Previously, identity standards for IDs were set at the state level, since the state issues IDs. Real ID adds this federal level of identification.

At a minimum, you must provide documentation showing: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence; and 5) Lawful Status. Which, in my state at least, is what you need to get a driver's license anyway.

Thankfully there are States that recognized the intent of Congress and have initiated "Enhanced" Driver's Licenses or "Secured" Driver's Licenses for a number of years now.

I wasn't aware of this so thanks for the heads up. Though it looks like I can more easily renew my regular ID here in MI. Still, I just placed an order online for my birth certificate in case.

Well...the Real ID Act was passed in 2005. It's been 20 years. I got it the last time I renewed my driver's license 3 or 4 years ago. It did add $20 to the cost, I think. It wasn't a big deal.

That's correct, the Real ID Act was passed in 2005 but Congress, at the requests of several States, delayed the implementation until 2025.
The Real ID Act will standardize the Driver's License requirements across the nation.

Arizona is one of the states that demanded the delay. Before, our licenses expired on our 65th birthday. Now we have to update them every 12 years.

I'm glad you mentioned this. My next renewal is in the year 2032. That's an 8 year period that will expand to 12 years in my next rotation.

Eventually, I'll be cruising the heavens with Space Ghost - Driver's License or No.

I think I recall something; that happened on an episode of Burns and Allen. Gracie Allen was asked for ID. She simply looked in a mirror, and said something like: yes, it's me!

I wonder if this would be enough for modern ID requirements?

In the UK one also needs an approved form of ID for domestic flights. I can't remember what exactly because I just use my passport, but I think one can use a driving license as it's officially issued and includes a photograph.

Real ID is the same concept.
