What? Me? Really?
As I woke mid-sleep just now, I resisted getting "up" for a while, but clearly wasn't sleepy any more, so turned on the TV rather than do anything or surf the web. There was the end of a dumb episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 playing, which was good for a chuckle, but then I bailed and went to catch the middle of Baking With Julia, which I probably saw some years ago.
The guests were Jeffrey Alford, and his (now-ex) wife, Naomi Duguid. They were featured in the episode and were (I think) demonstrating how to bake naan in a conventional oven (in absence of a Tandoori oven).
Jeffrey's appearance was striking, and reminded me of a rather eccentric friend I knew back in Arkansas, an accomplished nurseryman, botanist, and naturalist. He was a lot of other things too, but one of those people who isn't just in the 1% of excellence, but in the upper 10% of the 1%. You know these people when you meet them.
My odd-dar immediately pinged on Alford. He was gaunt, wearing a silk or rayon blouse and a bobbed haircut that made him look like a bad drag act impersonating a midwest housewife approaching menopause. He was treated by Julia with the same utmost respect that she afforded all her guests, and she was genuinely warm to him and his wife (I had no idea the other chef was his wife when I was watching.)
So, I started searching on this remarkable man, and learned he was from Laramie, Wyoming and a renowned cookbook author, winner of multiple James Beard Awards for his cookbooks, (co-authored with his wife.) He met her on a hike in Tibet in the '80's and wed a year after. They had two sons, but separated in 2009, and he left to go live in Thailand.

The titles of his cookbooks are enough to send me to eBay to find them, and it's easy to understand how they won the awards. The breadth of their topics is impressive.
While researching him, I stumbled across his blog, and was pleased to see him sporting a batik scarf that he loved, and that he had in a collection of many. I share his love of fabrics, and envy women having wardrobes in Western countries that men mostly cannot wear without become a spectacle. And, although I applaud him for wearing what made him feel good, I wouldn't feel good myself wearing anything so stunning that it garnered more attention than me. Jealous, I'd be.
His blog was sparsely maintained, with gaps of years, but he wrote in a manner as though speaking to a dear friend, so delightful. That gave me the impetus to start this thread.
Sadly, he died just this January, aged 69, in Thailand, from liver damage from flukes contracted long ago.
But, I think you might enjoy his blog, hence the link. Here is the YouTube vid of the episode with the naan:
The resolution is bad, but you can see what sent me looking for the rest of his story.
This thread is to point others to interesting websites you have found. They can be anything interesting from tax help to first aid to art to humor to whatever. Although not an absolute, I don't think this is a great place for porn or kink sites, as there are plenty of other forums here for those.
Please share your interesting place to visit on the web, and perhaps a bit about what you find appealing about it.
