I'm something of a hypochondriac, and decided to get myself tested for HIV last week. I'm 26 years old, have been with 5 guys, and have had anal sex with 2. I've always used protection for anal sex, however, have never used condoms for oral sex.

Although I got tested, I don't know how to interpret the test, and considering that I'm in Pakistan, I can't really go to a doctor to get this advice. Can anyone on this board PLEASE tell me how to read the test.

HIV 1&2 Combo - Non-reactive (0.11)
Cutoff Rate is 1.00 (Test performed by CMIA)

I understand that Non-reactive means "Negative", but how does the scale say "0.11" and not "0.0"

I'm really stressed about this, and need your help.

This sounds like one of the quick-test where they hold a small stick into the blood and it will change the color if you are positive. But I am not sure, I hope someone with a medical background will be able to fill you in the details.

0.11 where everything above 1.0 seems to be "positive" sounds like you are negative. I wouldn't worry too much about the 0.11 ;)

I am not a fan of the home HIV testing kits. There are very few that have been approved for us by governing bodies.

The non-reactive result would indicate a negative result so I would not worry (which is going to be hard for you to do because you have stated you are a hypochondriac) about the numbers.

The best way to be tested is to have blood taken and it be tested in a lab.

Hi, thanks for the quick responses. I was actually tested in a lab. The test result paper says:

"Please note that this is a screening test for HIV Combo, performed on fourth generation CMIA Architect i 2000 (3.12) employing chemiluminescent microparticals immunoassay."

Whatever that means.

I always just went to the free clinic and the people talked to me one on one in private. They didn't just give me a form and had me figure it out. They should tell you if you tested positive or negative.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll be fine. ;)

This is not something that I have ever heard of in relation to HIV testing. I only know about the Western Blot or ELISA testing.

It has to do with the way that the tests are intepreted. Most countries the screening test is the ELISA or EIA. The test that was done on you was a CMIA.

ELISA is an antigen test. It does not test for HIV- it tests for serum reactivity to a particular set of antigens- an indirect measure of immune response to proteins present on the HIV virus. The response is quantitative- ELISA measures reactivity by the extent of change in color compared to a negative and positive control. So, when you look at an ELISA plate you see a dark color for the positive control and a pale color to the negative control. A negative test result is lighter in color; a positive result is darker in color.

CMIA performs the same antigen test but also looks for an additional antigen that is present early in infection (p24 antigen).

Most people have a positive ELISA with undiluted serum- this is normal and does not indicate HIV exposure. Because of this "false positive", the serum is diluted- usually at a 1:400 ratio. This allows for more gradation in the color response to the antigen. So what your test result is saying is the the color of your response was below the color grade threshold for the positive result which is a "non-reactive" response.

Cutoff Rate is 1.00 (Test performed by CMIA) <- this tells you that the positive threshold is "1.0" in color grade
HIV 1&2 Combo - Non-reactive (0.11) <- your test was .11 which is less than 1.0, so your test is considered "non-reactive" or "negative" in layman's terms.

Thanks for your responses. Its a real relief.

Fear of STDs is enough to keep me in a committed relationship. I guess my quasi-hypochondria is keeping me chaste :P.
