pretty much all dating sites I've seen and any porn sites require you to be 18 or over to view their content. But ... the age of consent is 16 in so many places.

Where do these 2 years go ?

Isn't there some sort of law or something that bans sex between a person that is over 16 (15 over here) but under 18 and someone who's over 18... perhaps it's just like that over here or I may just be misunderstanding the whole thing.

I'm confused.
I thought it was just asking why you need to be over 18 to watch porn and join adult websites, when in some places you only need to be 16 to have sex?

Depends on what you're consenting to...

The US is a federal democracy and issues like age of consent for sexual conduct, marriage and other family law issues are controlled by state law not Federal law. Some states are as low as 14 while others have it as high as 18. There's a few states where there are specific exclusions when both parties are minors.

For viewing pornography, it's not against the law in the US for a minor to view porn. It's against Federal law to distribute porn to minors. The legislation was the 1996 Communications Decency Act but many of the sections regarding indecent speech were later removed from the statute. The question of what is "pornographic" is vague which is why most porn is created in America and is among the few things we export these days.

I think you will find though the prevailing law that sites abide by is the one from the country that they are located or based in... but most use the age thing as worst case scenario because its the safest course of action morally and legally.

Oh... and the age of consent varies drastically too...

Down under for str8 guys its 16, but for gay guys its 18....

If you want to watch 16 year olds having sex and it is legal in your country, does porn made in your country show it? It can be blocked from other countries, I used to try watching hi def clips on the BBC website , but they said I could not because I was not in GB. So don't blame the U.S. on this one. Interesting that there don't seem to be any nations with NO age of consent. I never realized it was so universal. There are some question marks, which I assume only means that the researchers weren't able to find the proper laws.

What's up with the "undefined" in North Korea, though? Considering the regime that runs that huge prison (yes, the entire nation is basically a maximum-security prison), I can't imagine they have no age of consent...

I think a lot of people are confusing the question of the original post. I think most sites follow the 18 year old rule because you're essentially entering into a contract. You are using a service provided by someone, and it is assumed you're paying for that service. Since you have to be legally an adult to enter a contract, most sites will require you to be 18 to join.
