Airport Extreme

So is this like a router or what? My dad doesn't even know what it is. But it says that you can stream music to speakers. So how does that work. That's what intriques me the most. Do you have to have wireless speakers? I'd love to have some nice speakers in here or able to stream to music to speakers in another house. And what's the difference between the two besides more ports?

And are the products like this on the market that are cheaper that do the same that this does?

I've just always wondered about this and figured now is good a time as any to learn about it.

Someone educate me :D

Oh wow..

Diddn't know it was that easy.

Hell the printer would come in handy too.

That's awesome. I can use my iPhone to control that too.

I have noticed that that I can't stream videos with the Remote app.

The only videos I can stream are music videos I bought from iTunes. However with a web based streaming thing, similar to remote, I can stream videos.

Well thanks Noelie. Now all I need is speakers, airport express, and oh yeah money.

Someone hire me :(

I don't mean like that >_>"

Besides. I don't charge for that.

All I charge is a gay days shirt and a hoodie :D

And what's the difference between the two besides more ports?

Airport Express:

One ethernet port, plus wireless 802.11N router
Wireless printer server - does not support other USB devices
Wireless audio streaming

Airport Extreme:

1 in/3 out ethernet ports, plus wireless 802.11N router
Wireless printer server - also mounts and wirelessly shares USB hard drives/memory sticks etc
NO wireless audio streaming

Natively, the Airport Express only streams audio using iTunes. But you can buy a third company add-on called AirFoil for 25 bucks that sends audio from any application (Quicktime, WMP, DVD player etc) to the Airport Express, plus any other computer on the network. So, for example, you can watch a movie on your laptop and stream the sound through your hi-fi system.

Wait Airport extreme doesn't do wireless streaming? That's retarded.

Airfoil. I've actually heard of that. That sounds like something that might be worth it. A shame that it can't do that without Airfoil though. But at least using airfoil you can get movie sound through nice speakers.

Well thank you andysayshi.

Just need that job now..

Sorry Noelie. He dedicated a post to it and went into some more detail about it is all >_>"

But yes you mentioned it first :D

Sorry, Noelie - I missed your AirFoil reference. A lack of dedication on my part! :-)

"Dedicated a post"?

WTF!?!

Well that's the last post of yours I'll be replying to.

I gave you pretty graphics and told you that what you needed was an Airport Express (three times plus the cables you might need) - and you don't need Airfoil - that gives you extras but iTunes will do the job just fine if all you want is streaming music which is what you asked in the first place.

Whatever.

Hey now Noelie. Don't take it so personal..

You did give me the great graphics, you summarized it well and told me all about it. Also your right I don't really need Airtunes. I never knew that you could do it with Qucktime or iDVD though so I learned a little more. It's a good thing to learn isn't it. You summed it up greatly. But what the other poster did was tell the difference between airport express and extreme but you did explain more. Don't take it so personally ^_^"

I'm glad that you responded as well.

I got an extreme myself.
Quite happy and it's good compared to Netgear (Got a Netgear back at my parents).
Never died on me so I got awesome uptime on the server.
I wish I could say the same about the Netgear.

Get one it's alright.

Kinda sucks though that you have to restart it for every LITTLE change.
