Someone here helped me before with this but I forgot what it was they had recommended. I can't play videos on Windows Media PLayer or quicktime(the video won't show btu audio does). What is the name of another downloadable player? I think it was some acronym or letters or something. If you say the name I am sure I will remember it. I "recovered" my computer and now it is gone. Thanks and sorry for the vagueness

VLC? That's the one suggested to me when my system wouldn't play videos.

yes - vlc - video lan client www.videolan.org/vlc

or windows media player classic / quicktime alternative although those are just less bloated versions of wmp, and you still need the codecs

you still need the video codec to decode the video. so another player wont help you unless it has the codec built into it.

I use the klite codec pack. http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm

there is basic, standard, and full (each one a larger file download, but each one has a larger pack of codecs). you could start with the basic and see if that works for you.

^ not for vlc - it has most of the codecs :)

I like the GOM player better than VLC. It plays anything on earth.

You can try Combine community codec, which has basically every codecon earth.

I am using VLC for flv vids. My WMP can play everything wth the codecs

I use QuickTime with Perian which has tons of codecs. And it is free.

Perian aims to provide a single package for all your playback needs. It is a collection of QuickTime components incorporating several libraries:
• libavcodec, from the ffmpeg project, along with code from the old FFusion component:
• MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2
• DivX
• 3ivx
• H.264
• Flash Video
• Flash Screen Video
• VP6
• H263I
• VP3
• HuffYUV and ffvhuff
• Indeo 1 & 2
• MPEG-1 & 2 Video (in supported formats)
• Fraps (up to v4)
• Windows Media Audio v1 & v2
• Flash ADPCM
• Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska)
• MPEG Layer I and II audio
• DTS Coherent Acoustics audio
• Snow wavelet video
• DosBox video
• Nellymoser ASAO audio
• libavformat, from the ffmpeg project. along with AVIImporter.component:
• AVI file format
• FLV file format
• NUV file format
• libmatroska, along with matroska-qt.component:
• MKV file format
• Subtitles:
• (Advanced) SubStation Alpha
• SRT
• SAMI
• VobSub
• liba52, via A52Codec:
• AC3 audio

The code is available under the LGPL. The development site is located at <http://trac.perian.org/> and the project's Subversion repository is located at <http://svn.perian.org/>.
The code for A52Codec is available under the GPL. The project site is located at <http://trac.cod3r.com/a52codec/> and the project Subversion repository is located at <http://svn.cod3r.com/a52codec/>.

Again, I'm repeating myself:

Unless you edit videos yourself, you do NOT need any codec pack.

If you just watch videos, all you need is VLC.
