It depends on how many and whether they are internal or external.
The first step is to see a physician- either his primary care physician or a colorectal surgeon.
The options for removal are freezing them off (cryotherapy), laser removal or surgical excision. If the warts are external and very small, the physician may do a trial of a cream that triggers the immune system to attack the wart (imiquimod). More extensive warts and internal warts usually require surgical removal.
All warts- anywhere on the body- are caused by HPV. There are multiple strains of HPV- some strains cause anal and genital warts and a few strains can cause anogenital cancers. Primary care physicians don't discuss this with their patients but anyone (male or female) who is having anal sex with multiple partners should also be getting Pap smear screening for precancers of the anus and rectum.
