and on the 7th day Josus arose from the grave

I hadn't either... I listened to about a minute of each in the OP. They had a 70's-80's vibe to them I kinda liked.

When she finds the right production she can also channel hip-hop without sounding contrived.

She was barely a teen when she recorded this, riffing over the track effortlessly.

Are you absolutely certain? At one point you couldn't escape this song.

But her unreleased material is MILES better. Here she is sounding more like Jill Scott or Erykah Badu than Britney or Christina who she is often and erroneously compared to.

Never heard the first one...I still have never heard a Britney song as far as I know anyway...she makes my skin crawl....

The second one I love.... kinda reminds me a little of Angela Bofill ...or Sheila E's jazzy stuff....but someone else more than those two that I cant think of right now. I like it a lot.....

You are right about a genre....Bettye LaVette reinvented herself (again) and this time...it worked. I thought she was underrated and ill advised in the 70s....I liked her anyway..but now...I'm in love

That's my concern for her, IF she stays true to herself and her artistry she can easily become a force to be reckoned with in the underappreciated world of r&b. The bright light at the end of the tunnel is her latest efforts are sounding more experimental, jazz, r&b, hip-hop than her early work. I think she's finally grown comfortable in her own skin and now that she has a label that's actually supporting her-- the reason for her four/five-year haitus is her former label, Blackground, Aaliyah's old label, wasn't handling business properly and couldn't even secure distribution for the last album she recorded which ended up scrapped. Now she's with Interscope or some other big label which will hopefully give her the promotion she deserves.

The first person I thought of when I heard this was John Legend. Her voice is like silk and honey and her writing is becoming very introspective and poignant.

She speaks candidly about her struggles in the industry on this interlude

"You should pull your titties out...then I'll put your record out"....yeah...that sums up a large part of it....

She should find a mentor at this point ....maybe go on the jazz circuit. She has the talent and the voice....they have the longest careers as well.....

...a lot of R&B greats have their most success in other parts of the globe...like Japan...

Patti Austin is one of my favorite singers and most people in the US don't even know who Patti is even though she was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame this year along with John Legend and Steven Tyler but in Japan and a lot of other parts of Asia and the globe she is well known.

Bow down before your new queen.

Blowin the bullies away? Positivity push through? Sounds like a corny ass after school special written by a 3rd grade teacher with good intentions but little writing ability.

Queen Jojo....

"We had a meeting at the farmer's market and talked over a bottle of wine
A Parliament cigarette he sparked and I knew I was playin with fire
and I shouldn't have come here alone
I been lookin for love in all the wrong places
and tellin myself I'm grown
when I look in his eyes I'm his girl and he knows it

Kiss like you love me now
no one can tune that out
your frequency hits me less frequently
I have to haunt your dreams
you can't stay mad at me
just cuz it's supposed to be
don't mean it's gonna be

You can still break my heart even if we're only messin around
I'm different now
I'm just thinkin out loud
and I try to be cool but my feelings keep pulling me down
Something's different now
I'm just thinkin out loud"
