And so the Sci-FI (SYFY) channel bites the dust.

That sux. What's going to happen to Eureka? Guess it will bite the dust too. It was a really good show.

So disappointed.... :( I just knew when the re-branding happened it was just the beginning of the end...... As if calling the channel SYFY wasn't bad enough, now we are going to have wrestling intrude on the geeks sanctuary, just ugg... I would LOVE to sit down with the idiot that made this decision and have him try to explain just how the fuck wrestling is apart of science fiction and fantasy (other then wrestling not really being real).

Well Sci-Fi was once one of those go to channel's I'd leave on and sit through when nothing else was on. I started straying from that a while ago and now I can't anticipate ever going back.

Well the wrestling on the WWE is fake, so in a sense that makes it a fantasy.

Still even with wrestling being fake in general, it falls more in the realm of reality tv. All I can say is I hope shows I like stay on the air, tivo is a nice service.

That sucks, there were some good movies that they showed on there like Decoys and the miniseries Tin Man.

Why am I not surprised. This channel is owned by the same people who claim Bravo is not a gay channel.

Suddenly, BBC America adding Star Trek: TNG makes more sense.

I gave up on Sci-Fi a long time ago. They had more commercials than they had programming. It was maddening to try and watch anything on that channel.

So i'm the only one that saw this one coming a mile away?

nope, you're not the only one. this was inevitable as it is a broadcast network and it needs to make money. i was expecting changes when they re-branded themselves as "syfy." i follow one of their big wigs on twitter and for months now he's been going on about how the change was opening up new markets for them, etc., etc. and as much as i loathe "professional wrestling" i suspect it makes them money lest it be on the air in the first place.

It just makes me sad to live in a society where 'professional' wrestling rakes in cash and Battlestar goes unnoticed by most the populace.

I'm not sure if it was intentional but this thread is misleading. The OP makes it sound as though the channel is going away and all programming will cease. What is happening according to the article is that Wrestling is taking over the Friday night slot that was traditionally reserved for original programming. They seem to be also focus on new non-scifi shows. The other shows are not being canceled they are simply being moved to different nights. Some of Syfy's shows are still quite popular.

It's totally misleading. What does "bites the dust" mean to you? To me it doesnt mean the original premise is shifting. As you can see a lot of other posters are lamenting the loss of shows they like. Those shows arent necessarily going anywhere. Most likely they are merely moving to different nights.

Well, "Bites the dust" was probably a bit misleading. I refer of course to a lot of the programming, not the channel itself.

Actually, a lot of the shows will probably go somewhere else or disappear. They are changing the format, adding cooking shows etc. Kind of like going from Jazz to talk radio.

Anyone remember tech TV? Then G4 took it over, merged it, then obliterated it.

I remember when the Sci-Fi channel first started operation. I caught this weird video on my C-band dish. For the young guys here, a C-band dish is a 10 foot satellite antenna. They broadcast this nebulous cloud and sound effects for a few weeks.

Then one day the Sci-Fi channel premiered. WOW! it was so cool! (back then).

But gradually it became watered down, and the writing was on the wall. It WAS a niche channel, like special-X on XM radio. They both played odd and unusual content. Alas, that does not make money like top 40's crap, so Special-X is gone and the "essence" of the Sci-Fi channel soon will be as well. SYFY, isn't going anywhere.

Oh well, there's always downloads. I just added 2TB of storage to my media server.

I'm really hoping that the suits get enough backlash from their audience that they will keep most of the shows, but we'll see.

Hell, I remember when Spike TV was The Nashville Network. Stranger content changes have happened. So even though I don't get SyFy (so far Canada's Space Channel is still a SPACE channel), I'm going to keep an eye on this as it unfolds, and worry. :(

I'm not in the least bit surprised. What's sad is the fact that it was actually a good channel with a wide variety of programs when it first started.
