All of my friends' deaths have been by motor vehicle accidents, cancer or suicide.

Maybe it's not the city, but all of the fatalities you mentioned but this last one were gun deaths. Doesn't Michigan have a very high gun ownership, as well as a growing fraction of militia-mentality folks who believe the NRA fear stuff?

We keep hearing about what sounds like radical gun rights defenders.

As for the store owners, that would still align with the Detroit metro area indeed having a high crime rate.

In any event, my sympathies for your loss. It's horrible to think of a friend being murdered.
As for the store owner he had forgotten to lock his door and was in the back room, the place was a bit dark but still had lights on. He came out with a pistol, ordered us to leave and his wife was outside with a long gun, then the cops came. This was back in 1971 (I think). I have felt like I am on borrowed time after a few episodes with knives and guns. As for the militia crowd I have never met anyone of that ilk. Most of the people that are involved in gun accidents were never taught the value of human life and the danger(s) of guns. Hell, most can't wipe their asses.
