Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons has a knack for drawing in an audience with his slow-tempo croons that range somewhere between Roy Orbison's yodel and opera vibrato. His unique vocals, after all, earned the 39-year-old the UK's honorable Mercury Prize in 2005 for his second album, 'I Am a Bird.' But now, Hegarty and his collaborators are taking things into the visual realm with a book of art that will be released with 'Swanlights,' their fourth album, on Oct. 5.

"I like drawing because it is open-ended," Hegarty tells Spinner. "One invites the viewer to perceive a drawing within the framework of the viewer's own thoughts, dreams and associations."

Antony is no stranger to the art world -- his work has been displayed in solo shows, some of which you can see here. The 144-page book is being published by Abrams Image and is a mixed bag of paintings, collages, photography and writing. "I like that freedom and that kind of intuitive communication," Hegarty says. "It makes me feel more free."

Such an exceptionally compelling and talented artist. His voice and his words simultaneously break and melt my heart.

Swanlights, the new album from Antony and the Johnsons, is coming October 11 in Europe on Rough Trade and a day later in the U.S. from Secretly Canadian. (It's been pushed back a week from its originally announced release date.) Antony has now let loose with the album's tracklist. And oh snap, look at that: Fellow otherworldly wailer Björk shows up to duet with Antony on "Flétta". This won't be the first time Björk and Antony have hooked up; Antony previously duetted with Björk on her songs "The Dull Flame of Desire" and "My Juvenile".

As previously mentioned, Swanlights will also come in a special art-book edition from Abrams, which will include a 144-page book featuring Antony's paintings, collages, photography, and writing. Check below for the album's tracklist.

In other Antony news, we'll soon hear his version of "Returnal", the title track of the new album from synth-drone titan Oneohtrix Point Never. On August 31, Editions Mego will release the "Returnal" 7" single, which will feature Antony's version of the song, which includes Oneohtrix dude Daniel Lopatin backing Antony on piano. The single's B-side will feature a remix of "Returnal" from fellow experimental guru Christian Fennesz, and the single will feature artwork from Sunn O))) man Stephen O'Malley. That's a lot of out-music big dogs on one 7"!

First Impressions

- Come October 5, Mercury Music Prize winner Antony Hegarty and Antony And The Johnsons will be releasing Swanlights, the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed album The Crying Light on Secretly Canadian. There will also be a deluxe version of the upcoming album, with limited-edition release that includes a 144-page book, which is mostly made up of Antony’s paintings, collages, photography and writing.

- “The Great White Ocean” is a very deep and poignant song that will bring you to tears. Antony’s vulnerable voice sings: “Sing to me my father, when I die/Please remember father, we must try/Try not to forget our family/ oh my darling father rescue me”

- The fourth track, “I’m In Love,” adds a more cheerful vibe to the album with buoyant spirits despite its complexity.

- “Violetta” is a 36-second snippet that will remind you of traditional Japanese melodies before moving to the gloomy and subtle title-track, “Swanlights.”

- “Thank You For Your Love” is a beautiful piano-driven ballad filled with horns and stringed arrangements that will put a smile on your face after seven brilliant but sorrowful tracks. Hegarty sings his heart out and repeats the line “I thank you,” giving a joyful vibe to the album.

Key Tracks

“The Great White Ocean,” “Salt Silver Oxygen,” “Thank You For Your Love”

Predictions

Antony and the Johnson’s Swanlights will definitely continue to charm fans and critics alike. Combine brilliantly-composed melodies and orchestra arrangement and lyrics that speak of endless sorrow, heart-wrenching moments and appreciation with Hegarty’s unmistakably impressive vocals, and Swanlight is definitely a must-have extraordinary musical experience.

Swanlights, the new album from Antony and the Johnsons arrives October 11 in Europe via Rough Trade and October 12 in the U.S. via Secretly Canadian. But Swanlights won't be the only new Antony joint out soon. The five-song EP Thank You for Your Love will be out August 24 in the U.S. and August 30 in Europe.

The EP's title track will also appear on Swanlights, and you can download it in exchange for an email address over at Antony's new website. The EP also features a couple of intriguing covers. Antony and ambient composer William Basinski take on John Lennon's covered-to-death "Imagine", and Antony and guitarist Kevin Barker (Currituck Co.) cover Bob Dylan's largely forgotten 1980 song "Pressing On". We've got the tracklist below.

Thank You for Your Love:

01 Thank You for Your Love
02 You Are the Treasure
03 My Lord My Love
04 Pressing On
05 Imagine

Björk recruited Antony Hegarty, singer for Antony and the Johnsons, for "The Dull Flame of Desire," a duet from her last album, 2007's Volta. On "Flétta," a track from the Johnsons' October 12 release Swanlights, she returns the favor. Listen below!

Unveiled Wednesday on Antony and the Johnsons' Tumblr, "Flétta" is a tender duet from two of music's most unique voices. A simple piano melody puts the spotlight on the Icelandic songstress' vocals, as Antony's shivering bellow follows her lead.

"Flétta" is just the latest in a flurry of activity from Björk, who released "The Comet Song" to benefit UNICEF's work with flood victims in Pakistan, and collaborated with Dirty Projectors on the seven-song benefit collection Mount Wittenberg Orca.
