Anybody else here hate Madonna?

Being gay doesn't mean you are forced to like Musicals (or in my case Madonna). Musical Theatre Queens and Madonna Lovers should be able to live together - especially on a site like this.

I agree, a lot of people don't fit into the stereotype of the gay community.

I hate being considered a stereotype because I like musicals. I like plays as well. It's the experience of live theatre more than anything that I love.

Wow, I thought I was the only gay man that hates musicals too !!!!

Not into any of it. Especially the Academy Award winning "Chicago." Hated that all the way.

I make up for my non- musical loves though with my obsession for soap operas. Go "General Hospital"

A friend gave me the full song to this, and I fell in love with it. Its from the musical Wicked.

I just can't take pleasure in watching musicals. I tried several movies to get used to it but "De-Lovely" with Kevin Kline was sooo unendurable.

If you "hate musicals", it may be because of this hideous change: check out Oklahoma, Show Boat, My Fair Lady, and other classics. Not to mention pure movie musicals (not from Broadway shows) like the Fred Astaire - Ginger Rogers movies (Top Hat, etc.) and Gene Kelly's movies (Singin In the Rain, etc.). Just make sure the vintage is, say, pre-1960, and I think you'll find a glorious difference.

The pre-1960 musicals are chock-full of tunes by the greatest American composers - for a truly seductive intro, listen to Ella Fitzgerald's songbook series (she recorded the greatest American composers on individual albums) - you'll be hooked.

My boyfriend just reffered to me as a Musical Theatre Republican... meaning I don't like anything unless it's from the Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kander & Ebb or Sondheim canon.

While that's not entirely true, he does have a point. There are purists out there - like me - who needs there to be a plot to a musical, not just singing for singing sake.

Preach man! I just like music period. Plus, there are good and bad musicals. I enjoy the arts as a whole. I love movies, music and plays. Yet I also love sports. Can't we all just like what we like. We can't help what we like because we just like it. It's not forced. For instance, I enjoy some Madonna songs, but I'm not a huge diehard fan.

As you can see from my avatar, I love musicals (especially Rent, don't judge it from the movie.) Last night I saw a new musical, Spring Awakening, it was flipping amazing!

I hate musicals but loved "Phantom of the Opera," both on stage and screen. Go figure.

Jw. A great deal of us are notorious for being musical theater queens, but I for one can't stand them, and think musicals are silly. Anybody else agree?

Totally! I don't even understand the appeal. I once joked w/my friend that I must be a closet hetero because of it. Then I see a couple of cute guys walked past... and decide there must be some other theory to explain it. :D

I liked West Side Story....and that's about it. But I haven't really seen anything else, except for Phantom of the Opera, which IMHO, sucked. Well, Andrew Lloyd Webber in general sucks.

As a genre I very much like them and have seen quite a few of the. Saw Aida in NYC and loved it, saw the touring production of the producers, Hairspray, and Wicked. Didn't like the 1st one but loved the others. BTW Brandon Defying Gravity is one of the biggest reasons I love WIcked.

There are so many sub-genres of musicals, you really have to try to expose yourself to more if you really don't like the first few ones you've heard.

Some musicals like Assassins have all types of songs from folk to ballads. Then there is Avenue Q which is really hilarious. And if you want real meaningful social commentary, you can listen to Caroline or Change(written by Tony Kushner, who wrote Angels in America):

Well said Angelfan...live theatre is truely an amzing experience words cannot describe..(!) ..| ..|

Years ago, I went to see Sunset Blvd. Loved the story-line, but every time they broke out into song, I just wanted them to shut-up. Same thing with Disney movies like The Lion King. I'm just interested in the story-line.
