i didn't hate it but i think it was overrated. there were some major things wrong imo. for one, there was no sign of legitimate attraction. it was just like "it's too cold outside, sleep in here.... BAM let's fuck." nothing led up to it.there was no sorta flirtation or awkwardness. if it wasn't for the fact that everyone new going in what was gonna happen it would have been so jarring and weird. i think it kinda perpetuates the notion that gay relationships are just about horniness and lust. then to make matters worse they cheat on their wives and betray their families for years. i think there are some great subtle things like when they separated and ennis got sick. also the fact that jack stole his shirt and saved it. but i mostly don't get the hype.

Sure, Brokeback had it flaws but despite the criticisms Ive heard in the past it was an enjoyable movie for me. The biggest disappointment was that the relationship between the two men lacked development. The movie would have been stronger imo had a greater emotional bond been formed. In the end, Brokeback left me with much to imagine about gay relationships & missed opportunities.

The first time I watched the film I felt pretty much the same you did. I think there was too much hype and I was expecting alot. (plus the theatre I watched it in was nearly empty, and the old ladies giggled at the sex scenes). when I watched it by myself after I rented it, I got alot more out of it. As far as the infidelity with their wives, you have to analyze that considering the era and place it occurred. It kind of made me sad that they couldn't live an out lifestyle. Even though it was suggested to start a ranch together, the image of that gay ranch couple that was brutally murdered and the fact that Ennis dad took him to see the mutilated bodies saying that that's what happens to people like that was very powerful. Like I said, better the 2ns rime around for me, I actually cried, but when I saw it in the theatre I was dissapointed..go figure

What I find interesting about it is that if you were to replace them with a man and woman, the story would be completely boring. It's like it's supposed to be great just because it's two men, but at the end of the day it's a fairly forgettable movie.

The film was beautifully photographed and was true to its time period and place (middle America 40 yrs. ago or so). I did not like the Ennis character because he reminded me of a passive-aggressive boy friend of mine from the past.

My main issue was that the film continued an old movie stereotype of bad things happening to gay people, or, at the very least, unhappiness.

Actually haven't seen it yet.!oops! All the Brokeback threads kind of killed my interest in seeing it.Imagine I will though, and I probably would be emotionally impacted by it...doesn't take much to get the tears welling in my eyes.

It was good the first time I saw it, but competely boring everytime after.

I think I'll stay away from it for the rest of my life just for the sake of it stayin good in my books

Over-hyped....

Followed every stereotypical gay plotline....

Their relationship was not positive for the community....

They cheated on their spouses .... couldn't commit to one another .... One was a whore the other was an emotional void.... and then of course the end... when the enevitable happens... like soo many other typical gay dramas.....

Recently, I popped in the dvd to watch it again. Now, I did not really enjoy it when I watched the first time. But this time, instead of doing other work as the dvd played, I pushed my work aside and got myself indulged in the story-telling.

I don't see it as a stereo-typing. We have to admit that such a plot is possible in the gay life. It is not that this movie can concentrate on the many types of guys who are gay, but Ang Lee chose this time to focus on 2 gay guys who are in this issue. The movie revolves the 2 of them, and the beginning of their affair, and the tragic end of the affair.

It was a beautiful movie, well done, and as such, as the hype built up around the movie, it became even more popular. By the way, I do believe that if this movie is not directed by Ang Lee, I bet it won't be as popular as it has been.

I didn't like it. I saw it in theaters and actually laughed out loud when i saw they were herding sheep. I thought "how ghastly ironic that in a gay movie they would be herding sheep!" lol
