Sam Sparro announces new album 'Return To Paradise'

Openly gay Grammy-nominated pop singer Sam Sparro has formally announced his new album, Return To Paradise, will be released in May.

Inspired by soul and funk music from 1978-1984, Paradise is the product of two-and-a-half years of writing and recording in Los Angeles, London and New York.

The album features a wide range of international musicians including Jamiroquai founding bass player Stuart Zender, violinist Caitlin Moe, The Horn Section from Hercules and Love Affair and Midnight Magic, Charlie Wilcocks, Dave Wilder, Felix Bloxsom and Sparro’s own brother and father on guitar.

Production credits on most tracks go to long time Sparro collaborator Jesse Rogg and Sparro himself.

Sam also worked with Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, Florence and the Machine’s Isabella Summers and Swedish singer/songwriter Erik Hassle on some of the song writing.

This new record follows the success of his self-titled 2008 debut that included his hit single Black & Gold.

He's an openly gay singer from Australia. he has a really good voice ...

You haven't heard him live. He looks bored on stage and in fact he looks bored and disorganised and unconvincing in everything except the clothes and the styling. He's not Australian anymore; that's just a PR story to make him seem interesting.

Despite all that, he would be interesting on a one-to-one basis in the bedroom.:-)

Re: that laconic LA hunk

“Mimicry is the name of the game in pop music today. You’ve got three or four producers making every song you hear on the radio, and not only are they ripping each other off but they’re constantly ripping themselves off too,” he said.

“As far as business goes, that’s really smart, because they’ve found a formula that makes them money. But I’m a terrible businessman.

“I’ve really resisted [the prevailing pop sound] emphatically, because I’m so bored with it and I’m so detached from it. Every now and then there’ll be a pop song on the radio I’ll connect to — I really liked the Calvin Harris and Rihanna track [We Found Love] — but I’m not really interested in chasing that wagon.”

For male pop stars, though, the opportunity for flamboyance and theatricality seems to be more limited… “I think males are definitely constrained culturally at the moment, which is ironic. There’s a lot of corporate discomfort with male sexuality right now, whereas female artists are given a lot more licence to be provocative and sexual.”
