And coming at the end of this year....

I am a very avid fan of The Elder Scrolls III (I remember surrendering two months of my life to that game)

Any other fantasy / role-playing games similar to this that you'd recommend? :)

That depands on your deffinition of 'similar'.

If you mean similar in game-play style then I would recommend Fallout III, and Fallout: New Vegas.

If you mean similar in medieval swords & sorcery. then I would recommend Dragon Age: Origins.

i played both Morrowind and Oblivion on the PC... Plaed all the way thru but got into some expansions. Added one that gave me a beautiful arcane tower (or whatever the called em - telvanni something? - it was awhile ago) and decorated it by stealing every lantern and candle in the entire game world.

Oblivion didn't let u steal canldes of lanterns if i remember correctly. I was disapointed by that, but otherwise was MUCH prettier a world... I'd like to play a new one when they get around to it.

I've heard good things about it but I keep forgetting to track down a copy of it.

I used to play ESIII all the time and have played it all the way through. I've also completed Tribunal, but Bloodmoor always caused problems with my system and I would have to uninstall that portion of the game.

It was a fun game and so broad in scope. You could go anywhere you wanted and do anything you wanted. Good game. (I loved playing the thief. I had a favourite face and I always gave him blond hair. He was just too damned cute, especially when I found a mod that would take off that silly little diaper. I finally got to see what Uncle Crassius was drooling over.)

I loved Oblivion! I played it nonstop for months! Then my xbox 360 got the red rings of death...twice. After the second time I gave up and sold it.

I have a wii now.

I played both Morrowind and Oblivion extensively. Exploring is one of my favorite thing to do in a game, and Bethesda is great with open environments.

I would echo the recommendation for Dark Age: Origins and the Fallout series.

Dear ChickenGuy,

Have you tried any mods/downloads for Morrowind/Oblivion?

They are beautiful games, but also inherently unstable and quite buggy, and there are downloads that make it perform much better.

There are also mods for Morrowind like Better Bodies or Better Heads that make the game look much better.

Then there are mods like Tamriel Rebuilt which is an as yet unfinished expansion that includes the whole of Morrowind province rather than just Vvardenfell.

There's also a beautiful mod by one of the Devs called Morrowind Advanced and a roleplaying mod called Morrowind Crafting which is also pretty neat.
Finally, there are also resources that allow you to actually change the content of the game: e.g. make an NPC with your own face.

I've been fooling around with both games for years and years since at least 2002...

Vaguely similar, but not based on the sandbox principle, is Neverwinter Nights + all the expansions.

I played Oblivion, but I really didn't care for it. I guess I like a certain amount of linearity in games, and Oblivion was way too open for me. *shrugs*

The reason for my delay in replying to you, and the reason I've not been on JUB for 10 days, is because I've been playing plug-in downloads for Morrowind! \:/

Have you also discovered the same website as I have? ;)

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page

It's an excellent and invaluable site for info and for helping you out of difficult spots.

The ones I did are listed on this page:

Yes, back when I played it on my PC, it was crashing all the time. The amount of hours work I lost...

It has worked a lot better since I recently installed it on my new laptop. I was doubtful it would be compatible, but it's worked fine. :D

And yes, from the same website, there are patches and fixes for most of the bugs in the game. ..|

Then there are mods like Tamriel Rebuilt which is an as yet unfinished expansion that includes the whole of Morrowind province rather than just Vvardenfell.

OMG, I only just found out about that last week!

I haven't downloaded it yet, but I've looked at their website and the maps of their work. It's very impressive. :=D:

Oh god, Morrowind was so much better than Oblivion. The latter was actually insulting with how dumbed down it was at times.

Skyrim is going to be weird. I think they said they were making a new engine for it, which means brand new bugs! Exciting!
